dry skin on babies
 

hi my baby is 4 weeks old and has dry skin on her legs. does any one know how i can clear it up. health visitor advised olive oil but that didnt work.

also i think it is the stuff ive been putting in her bath can any one recommnd any thing as a replaement or should i just give her baths with just water

I used to just use baby oil and baby lotion, also johnsons moisturiser:D

I used to use Epaderm with jack when he had dry skin. You can use it as an ointment like normal or can use it as a soap and as a moisturiser in their bath (and would also suggest patting the skin when drying it rather than rubbing it)

Have you tried putting baby oil in her bath, i used to do that , but be careful because they end up like a slippery eel:rolleyes:

I never really rated the normal moisturisers, they never seemed to do enough

Use Aqueous cream in the place of soap.......It is sold in huge tubs and is quite cheap.......H&B on Eastgate have it for something like 99p.

The other option is ask your health visitor for a prescription for something (thats who recommended the epaderm to me)

you could try E 45 cream, dunno if its suitable for newborns though, you'd have to ask

when my kids were babies, i never used all this stuff you can get now, all babies have dry skin, and the old methods to me are best;)

unless the baby is diagnosed as eczema then ya do need special stuff

My baby had dry, flaky skin and the doctor prescribed a liquid called Balneum to put in her bath. I was also advised to use aqueous cream oin her after her baths.

This sorted her out. :)

Aqueous cream is water based so it wont do her any harm

we use both aqueous cream and epaderm on kian just now...we put epaderm in his bath so it get everywhere it needs to...

Aqueous cream and Epaderm are both very good I've used them both on Robert but now stick with Epaderm the greasiness really helps his eczema. I wouldn't use anything in the bath if her skin is dry especially not Johnsons just water is fine. Use plenty of the moisturiser, every nappy change for example and keeping the house cool also helps.

i used to work with a midwife who did baby massage - she hated baby oil etc - just derivitive from petrol - very drying to skin

she always recommended olive oil - and after using it a lot of mums swore by it - okay it doesnt smell great but maybe apply at night and bath in morning - might be worth a try

Maybe theres some nice organic massage oil you could drop into it to ease the smell, something lavendery...
I say organic as I wouldn't know whether most stuff is delicate enough for baby skin. Maybe body shop oils...

I don't think that body shop oils would be suitable for babies skin.

i'm just tring to think of somewhere, they stocked an organic range at one point, though I think now im getting confused with places. I'm think of Berts Bee's stuff, its nearly 100% natural ingredients and they do all sorts of things.

I'm sure there is some sort of oil delicate enough for baby skin though to scent olive oil.

You could use lavender plant stems if you have them - i have some wonderful plants in my garden - a french variety - very strong. they would scent the oil if you put them in
