I went into town today and everyone seemed really grumpy!

one shop the assistant only talked to me when she said how much it was was, put my things on the counter and wandered off without offering me a bag.. i didnt have one so had to eait till someone else came out of the back and ask them!

Re: ignorant sales people!!!

I can't be doing with people like that. Thats why, if i'm on checkouts, i'm always happy and smiling. Even if i'm having the worst day or am majorly hungover i never let it show.

Plus you cant risk getting the Mystery Shopper!

I think it is just you, try smiling and being polite it always works for me.

Like I said in chat I was stopped on the M6 allegedly doing 96mph, I then found out my MOT had expired and I walked away scot free, without even a funny taste in my mouth

I even shook his hand after my telling off.

Try being polite it works wonders :p

The ones who continue to chat to each other whilst serving customers irritate me.

I hate ignorant people.

A couple of weeks ago, I went into a shop, the shop keeper was talking on his mobile phone. I got my things and placed them on the counter. He tilled in the items, still talking on the phone.

The items came to £ 8.90. I gave him £10.00 ( he didn't even talk to me to tell me the price, I had to look on the till ) He gave me £6.10 change!! Thank you very much...... and I walked out!! That'll teach him

Any other time I would have pointed out that error..... but with this ignorant git.

LOL - where did you get that £15 note?

Re: ignorant sales people!!!

There is no need for people in sales positions to be ignorant. I think that if you are cheerful and polite you get the same response back. Have to say another thing that gets me is being in a queue and the person in front gets a call on their mobile asking where they are. The bit that annoys is that the person calling is probably waiting outside or very close by.

Its not always the assistants that are grumpy the customers can be too as well.

I was in iceland yesterday was late on mainly because i was waiting till i felt better before i went down town. Anyway there i was in the queue. There was only one till open and there was 2 assistants at that till, there was a problem. Anyway it was sorted but by the time it was sorted there was a long queue and i was at the back of it. So another assistant went and got someone else to open another till. The lad opened the till and said next please. Now this bloke with a dozen eggs went straight to him and put the eggs down. The bloke who was in front of him took exception to this and said im before you and moved his eggs and started putting his shopping down.. when the bloke with his eggs said i only have this - he said I'M BEFORE YOU and the poor assistant didnt know where to look or what to do - he was stood there doing nothing waiting and he could have put through the eggs no problem with no hassles, and this bloke with his eggs put them down again - this other bloke picked them up and moved them to another till and said IM BEFORE YOU thought it was going to be fisticuffs in iceland!!!! It was funny watching it - me - i stayed in the same queue i was in and got served quicker than the ones who moved over to the other till. By the way i let the bloke with the eggs go in front of me - he came and queued behind another woman and me we let him go in front of us. :p:p:p

I'll name and shame, it was farmfoods in Blackburn lol. Oh she was good. Picture the scene, two mothers, two impatient 3 year olds who have witnessed the purchase of various gingerbread men, cakes, chocolate, pop etc, 2 trolleys of food (admittedly mine probs counted for 1 1/2 of them), and a counter the size of a breadboard. The other customers were helping me cos the assistant was to busy removing her head from her large erm, orifice.

Incidentally havent been back....

That's true, then again polite people will often let someone with a couple of items go in front of them if they have a trolley full, I know I do.

If you let them in front of you then that's your choice but the guy pushed in so get to the back and wait your turn or else.;)

the guy who opened up the second till should have indicated who he was going to serve , not just saying "next please" and having all the morons rush over to his aisle .
As for the guy with one item , any supermarket with any brains should allways have the fast/quick check lane open at all times as the first option

im a very nice sales assistant too. i always smile and say please and thank you cos after all its customers who pay my wages and there is always the staff incentives and mystery shoppers! sometimes its hard tho ive had change thrown in my face and been smacked by a shoplifter i think we need danger money sometimes!lol

I have the problem not with the staff generally (everyone seems to talk to either me or my kids) but with the ignorant shoppers who push past me, tut and pull their face or rush infront of me if a new line opens etc knowing full well that its gonna take me a little longer to get there having the pram. I think a log of people are just ignorant and selfish in general. Although if you are working then you should at least try to be polite and put a smile on

I struggle to get round there in the pram anyway, a lot of the aisles are to narrow because of badly positioned display units, this goes for many of the shops though

Whoops, think we are all guilty of this Pam1 .. know I am. Was in Asda Thursday afternoon, met a friend and we chatted for about 1/2 hour. Did try to be aware of other people though. Problem was other people kept passing that we knew and got into quite a social gathering...

We were in front of the air fresheners, but shoppers (particularly the men) who wanted a certain type from these shelves were given our help to look and the whole thing became quite jolly and friendly. :D

sales assistants can have a bad day as well , the thing is that we cant show it to the customers, i never do, i always smile (or try to) unless im concentrating on something then i look if im about to explode lol.
If i have a bad day at work one of the girls from work will always make sure it dont last long, they so funny lol.
We are all allowed to have grumpy days, part of nature.
There is one girl in New Look, who i actually think is the manager, not sure, she is very rude, she always looks at you as if she is better than you.
We go some vouchers the other day for family and friends 20% off so i thought ohh brilliant im gonna ask and see if i can use it on the one in Preston cuz they do maternity clothing, anyway i went up to her and the 1st thing she asks is where did i get the voucher from, so i told her i work in ethels, she turns around in a bad manner and she goes, no you can only use it here, anyway, to doble check i ring customer services who says they are for any New Look store, i mean if i was skinny i would use it in the one one in accy but im nt a size 6 so i'll have to use it in Preston.

If you worked for me you'd be sacked. As long as you are being paid, your employer should expect you to be 'happy and smiley' to all customers, regardless of hangovers, or the time of day, and even if the customer isn't 'happy and smiley'.

The customer is always right...even when they aren't. That's good customer service.

Meh you two seem the exact people that wouldn't get good service. Manners don't cost a bloody thing and if you can't give them you don't deserve to receive them

This b- ... woman came in today and simply because she didn't like the sound of one of the meals she looked at me in disgust and talked as if I was stupid for even mentioning it... how someone can talk the way she did to another person and think it's acceptable I do not know.

Like I said earlier, if you take your employers pay, you should have the decency to give all of their customers good service. If you don't like it, you have the option of seeking other employment.

Good manners cost nothing, especially when someone is paying you to serve their customers well, regardless of their attitude.

You never know when you're going to need a reference in the future.;)

What kind of person are you ?

You think that because someone is getting paid minimum wage that they should lose all rights to self respect ?

Your reaction is that of a child and your thoughts are those of a snob.

I am damn good at my job, no matter how pathetic it may be and I have never had a single complaint, which is more than the manager or supervisors or hell anyone else in the place can say for themselves. My manager knows I am one of the best workers in the place and knows she is going to struggle to find an adequate replacement when I leave. Reference ? I've already got it and it's a bloody good one.

The way I live my life is to give an assumed respect until the actions of a person either earn true respect or show themselves not worthy of it. Why would that change for minimum wage ?

i'm the kind of bloke that says things as i see em, n a snob you wouldn't know if you met one. self respect means adequate service if yer having a bad day- your words not mine. minimum wage is crap n i do not dispute that, but kids with a chip on their shoulder i have no time for, hope that explains it.

References aren't worth the paper they're written on. Most prospective employers phone or write to the people who gave the actual reference, so good luck with that one.

I guess I'm just lucky, in that I was brought up to believe in good work ethics.

Pride in your job has nothing to do with the minimum wage. There are people working voluntarily who give 100% to what they are doing, and provide good service irrespective of whether or not they have hangovers, or whatever.

Personally I've always given 100% to anyone who has employed me, be that cleaning bogs as a student, or on a six figure salary, in charge of multi-million pound budgets, and numerous staff.

If I was your boss I wouldn't have to sack you...because you would never have made it past the first interview.;)

I guess I'm just lucky, in that I was brought up to believe in good work ethics.

You seem to skip half of what I have said, simply so you can lord it and attempt to make yourself look good, or so it seems anyway.
Your behaviour has totally changed my opinion of you, you used to at least seem to be a decent, balanced person however this has proved otherwise.

I am a good worker. I work hard and I do my job well. My boss knows this, the customers can see this, and I am not sure why I am so bothered in justifying this to you but I hate people being so very wrong. For the record, the hangover bit was a joke... along with the before 12 in the morning part, however it seems to have gone over the head.

I apologise for failing to find pride in my work of selling extremely low quality food at an extremely high price, aimed at families with young children and pensioners - the two groups of people who should really be spending their money on better things. Saying that, I do the job well and efficiently, with excellent service to the vast majority of customers. I do however put myself before my employer and would quit if my "superiors" for one second suggested that I should stand for being treated as sub-human. Luckily, as my employers do have experience in the service industry, as you so evidently do not, they understand and are on hand every time to deal with an "awkward" customer should it get to the point that blood is noticeably running down from ones bottom lip(again, a joke).

As to volunteers taking pride in their work, I would assume they do more than anybody as they wouldn't be doing it if they didn't. I know I care more about the stuff I do for Stanley, OSC and Ultras more than I do for my employer.

Low quality and expensive, good job he mentioned food or I would have thought he worked in the council tax office ;)

Sam has mentioned in a previous post that he works in a cafe so don't think a Brewer's Fayre, however, enjoyed his post and sure he does a good job. Customers can be difficult at times, but I always took pleasure in calming a customer down in my many, many years in Sales/Customer Liaison, etc. Not the retail section so not very qualified to comment.

Best ones are on the 'phone Sam ... you can be pleasant vocally whilst sticking yer tongue out at the same time .. and yes LOL, putting them on mute whilst they are having a go and you can shout down the 'phone and call them the biggest w**ker ever (no apologies for asterisks) .. they do not hear you .. tee hee. Have to make sure the mute button is working though, otherwise, BIG TROUBLE ..:D

So, if customers are 'happy and smiley' they might be fortunate enough to get 'adequate service' from yourself. How do you serve the people who you think should be spending their money, which goes to pay your wages, on other things?

Your very wise not to name your employer, otherwise they might be alerted to the things you have decided to publicly say.

If you take the pay, you do as they say, and if that really doesn't suit you should have the balls to walk, away and go and work for someone who you think is better suited to your people 'skills'.

Oooh I wouldn't dare do that!

What if you thought the mute was working but it wasn't?

Or you hadn't pressed it properly?

Doesn't bear thinking about.

Myself and a colleague were once talking to each other on the phone about our supervisor's weekend shenanigans.....rumour had it she'd gone home with someone from work.

It turned out she was doing an accreditation on the call and was listening in!

Most embarrassing. :o

I agree, but you never let the customers see if they've made you angry by their actions, and I bet you never did in your work Kate.

The customer is always right, even when they aren't.

With the right attitude even the surliest of customer can be won over, as long as you remain focused and professional, even if you scream and kick the metaphoric cat as soon as you leave their presence.:D

Adequate is variable depends on ones standards, I have high standards and therefore adequate service from myself is superior to the best of many.

Politely and efficiently, thanks for asking.

You seem to think that my management have a problem with me and my behaviour... this is not true, as I said I am the only person in the place never to receive a complaint and my service to the majority of customers is perfect. It is simply that I refuse to be mistreated and I will act accordingly if done so.

And as for walking away I need the money for university, and this place lets me work the majority of my hours on a sunday meaning I can still go to watch the Stanley.

Used to test first Lilly .. ask if they could still hear me and if no response could go full blast.

Never been in a situation whereby could be 'accredited', however, she should know the saying about 'eavesdroping'.

Perhaps I over reacted to your inital statement in this thread.

I admire the fact that you are working.

So good luck, and happily you'll never get to serve me, as I'm neither a pensioner nor have a young family.:D

No, but I am a good actress .. and used this talent in sales ... comes in handy. ;) I had the benefit of building up long term relationships with customers, and would tell them off if I thought they were being stupid. Short term/one hit relationships with customers are slightly different so not too sure how I would re-act.

Think a slight misinterpretation of Sam's posts here that's all.

True. I'm just seeing it from my own point of view.

You pay me, you get total loyalty, whatever the job.

Mind you, I'm worth every penny.:D

I usually give excellent customer service to every customer, however I make an exception for those rude and ignorant people who talk on their phones whilst being served... they get the silent transaction, or the ones eating in my store whilst I am serving them, especially those that put their half eaten lunch on the counter whilst paying, they get a scowl !

Thread interjection, irrelevant to thread topic!

Odd it is, seeing both sides of this topic and having been on both sides of the isle! Instead, all I wish to say is how I'd love to be in and around Accrington/Lancashire at this moment. As I read the above comments, I can smell and hear the splendid atmosphere of the Market places (minus the rif-raf). Absolutely glorious!

To stroll around with Rindy, Cashy, Neil, etc., bump into Kate and her mates, finally get to meet those Accywebbers I've yet to, have a natter with Bernie, the lovely Mez, Harwood Red, etc. . . . and then to finish it off with some Fish, Chips, mushy peas and a couple of pints.

Dag, made me all quite homesick. Especially on the=is rather cold, wet, accy day over this way!

Alrighty then, carry on and be happy mates!

Brian
