Phone problem

Has anyone else ever had this happen?

My home phone rang about 15 minutes ago and when I answered it, all I heard was an engaged tone type noise. OK I thought, and hung up.

The thing is, every time I go to make a call all I get is this engaged tone all the time, instead of a dial tone. I can't ring out and I assume nobody can ring in.

Has anyone else ever had this?

You haven't got BT answer have you? If somebody has left you a message then you get a broken dial tone. Try phoning 1571 and see if there is a message.

Yeh has happened because someone rang & i didnt get there in time so bt 1571 took the message & that leaves a broken dial tone, & another is usually cos me bro or someone has accidently rung my no in their pocket & not realised if they dont end the call then it does leave your phone unable to be used incoming or outgoing till they end it, tho that tends to have no tone but muffling noises & having to shout down phone for em to realise or hope their battery or credit conks out

Thanks for your replies. Turned out it was my answer machine causing a problem. I must have answered the phone at the same time the machine kicked in and confused it. A quick reset and all is now fine. :D
