Not sure what you want to know Keetah .. my grandaughter is now bereft of any toe nails on her big toes ... due to ingrowing toe nails. Was a great relief to her, as she suffered many infections and pain from them.

Aesthetically, they are not too clever now, suppose could get some form of false ones. Don't think she is really bothered to be honest, just glad to be rid of them.

well i am due to have both of my big toe nails removed after many years of pain - i know its going to be painful - but at least this time the pain is going to end at some point -i am not soft but somedays just putting a sock on (nevermind my shoes) brings tears to my eyes - so in a good way i am looking forward to it kind of -if you know what i mean
the chiropodist has said she is going to do one at once due to riskof infection etc - just wondering about healing time - i am expecting to go back to work day after ( work with children in a nursery) am i being realistic - also how llong did it take to heal to the point where normal activities can go on - eg gym etc just personal experiences from people thats all really 0- i can get all the facts i want off the net so any personal experiences would help me know what to realistically expect - thanks

Yes.............by a butch Australian Medic.
I had an ingrowing toenail in Malaya when Hovis was a lad.
I watched as the needle went in....my toenail went dead.
The nail was cut from the centre right down to the wick and peeled from side to side
Blood I could see...but did not feel a thing.
The following day was something else...I was in complete agony, and if that convict had shown his face I would have punched him in the nose

Hi. yes i have, its done under a local, when the toe nail is removed it exposes the nerves in the toe so try and keep your foot elevated for a week or so otherwise there will be a lot of pain, on the plus side its well worth having it doneso when it grows back there is no more pain. Good luck, hope all goes well. Regards Derek.

The wife once removed one of mine from on top of the telly :D

A heavy reel of cable fell on my foot some years ago, my big toe swelled up and the nail went black. The doctor drilled through the nail with a very fine drill ( it looked like a needle ) this was to relieve the pressure of the blood. The nail died and a new one grew back a while later. Have to say, half of the pain was due to the pressure of the blood.

Not nail removal as such I know, but there you go.

OUCH!!!!! Ginger suffers with in growing toe nails, the last time he went docs, doc said " OH I would love to take that nail off " (( he's a sadistic sod our doc )) BUT he said he would leave it a while longer, touch wood ginger hasn't suffered much with them in the last year.

Mine once fell off.... I had kicked a football wrong ( girl thing ) and it just flipped off  surprisingly though it didn't hurt.

Re: has anyone had a toenail taken off?

I had my big toenail taken off under local anaesthetic quite a few years ago now, don't want to alarm you but mine grew back the same way about 6 months later so they decided to remove both the nail & the root. It was done under general anaesthetic that time but the pain afterwards was excruciating - wouldn't have believed one little nail could cause so much bother!
Having said that it was worth it as I never had any trouble with it again.

the reson people get in growin toe nails is because they cut them back to far ; my nails are long myhusband would say but i don;t have in growin toe nails he has ; and has just had them done ;

Not sure if exactly true Pussycat .. ingrowing toe nails grow into the sides, not the top.. but will stand to be corrected it the latter also applies.

Keetah: Will have to get hold of my daughter to jog my memory re.the details of my grandaughter's removal of toe nails. I'm sure they did them both at the same time, and apart from her being a little uncomfortable .. e.g. having to wear cut out shoes, slippers 'cause of the dressings, don't think she was too bad at all. Think she suffered more with the infections before, etc. They were completely removed and will not grow back. Mind you, she was only 14/15 years at the time .. healing time quicker, and quite laid back about things.

it is true that this can agravate an existing disposition of ingrowing toenails, but that isnt what actually causes ingrowing toenails
i think i am safe in saying there are different degrees of the condition - mine have grown about 5mm down into each side of the nail from the base to the top so it isnt just the top corner that is the problem - this has caused further complications by causing my nail to curve rather than lie flat
believe me if it was just a case of not cutting them back too far there would be a lot less sufferers
it is a genetic condition and my dad suffers
my sister is lucky and doesnt ( yet i am the spitting image of my mum - and my sister looks like my dad - figure that one out lol)

but thankyou for your feedback x

and thanks to all for your helpful replies :D;)

Dont know much about the toenail removal sorry but to go back to work the day after............ When I broke my big toe (slightly different I know but) my boys kept standing on it, tripping over it etc. Although it wasnt on purpose it still happened, and that was with only 2 small children running about. You might be able to cope with it but just imagine if you were to get it trodden on accidentally, it may make it worse.

Just a thought :D
