Healthy eating
How many people bother eating healthily?
I just went shopping for loads of fruit and veg and some fish to accompany my salad and I spend nearly double my usual shop. Now I am trying to eat my plate of salad and its killing me :p I am sweating with all the crunching I am having to do, so I must be losing weight at least, but its so bloody stressful! And it takes longer to eat! |
Re: Healthy eating
How will you cope when you have false teeth? :D
Eating lettuce is like chewing a wet hankie. I solve the need for '5 a day' by using a juice extractor - no chewing needed. |
Re: Healthy eating
I eat a lot of fruit every day plenty of fiber and wash it down with a pint of Thwaites:D
|
Re: Healthy eating
I love fresh fruit but we never seem to have a great choice of really juicy stuff here.

Re: Healthy eating
if it dont come out of a chip pan or frying pan,it don't exist.:D

Rabbit food is for rabbits imo, and I dont like most fruit, I make up a little with fruit juice and activia.

Re: Healthy eating
You've made me think now! :D
OK, what have I eaten today? Breakfast - fresh orange juice, toast and honey (2 slices), coffee. Lunch - Cod in parsley sauce (the frozen sort - microwaved), 2 slices of bread and butter, slice of cheese and leek flan, half a pomegranate. Dinner - grilled lamb chop, low fat noodles, lettuce with low-fat salad cream, olives with feta cheese and garlic, strawberries and ice cream, half a banana. Snack - several cherries and a few grapes. Drinks - 1 glass Coke Zero, 2 cups coffee, nearly a litre of sparkling spring water. I like salad but I couldn't live on it. Celery is good - it has almost no calories - unless you spread it with peanut butter (like I do) then it's scrumptious but has calories. Cook a big load of spinach in a little bit of olive oil with a sprinkling of crushed garlic (in a pan with a lid on, for 5 minutes or so). It's delicious and filling and so-o-o-o good for you. Eat healthily but don't go mad and overdo it. Bonne appetite! :) |
Re: Healthy eating
I would love to eat healthy all the time but just cant afford it! we like to have steamed chicken and steamed veg and we love steamed fish and baby spuds and garden peas (steamed of course) i dont own a chip pan i only occasionally use a frying pan and only for eggs, I love my seamer! Just wish a healthy shop was a cheap shop!

Re: Healthy eating
We measure if the food was healthy in this house if we are alive when we finished the meal :)

Re: Healthy eating
If you're a good girl, and eat up all your salad, you can have one of these for pudding.;)

Don't get me wrong, I do try to eat healthy stuff, porridge for breakfast, olive oil for cooking and salads, avoid fast food and gooey cakes etc, I just can't get enthusiastic about steamed food.:eat: |
Re: Healthy eating
some stuff is lovely steamed. equally some is lovely deep fried :D
I Love fish poached in Milk but Julie probably couldn't think of anything more disgusting(She hates anything with hot milk ) veggies are usually nice steamed as they tend to keep their flavour better. You do know you need some fat in your diet to get the essential fatty acids that are part of our make up. I stick to 'natural' fats rather than man made stuff so its olive oil, butter and actual animal fat when needed. |
Re: Healthy eating
I am on my second steamer in 3 years, we do steam all veggies, and fish portions which we all like, we also use a deep fat fryer because some things only taste right deep fried in vegetable oil, anything else is done in the oven or grilled, so I suppose we half eat healthily.

Re: Healthy eating
Popped down to my local after my salad for 'a drink', which naturally meant 3 pints of the guest bitter and a double southern comfort and lemonade. I don't think I am taking this healthy eating thing very seriously at all.
I just had a ham and cheese sandwich and an activia yoghurt. Going to have a salad again for my dinner. I am doing this to lose weight but only because when you revise you tend to eat a lot of crap, and I have gained a stone in weight. Whilst I am still a reasonable weight, I do not feel particularly healthy, so thats why I think its time to sort it out. Plus I can't fit into my trousers for my summer placement, so I must lose a few inches! |
Re: Healthy eating
 cheese is fattening.....so is coleslaw:D
unless its the low-fat variety:D |

I already had the cheese in my fridge, and yes it is high in fat, or so the red segment of the circle tells me. The coleslaw is the low fat type. |
Re: Healthy eating
I used to like salad, but these days it gives me digestive problems, and I am hungry very soon after eating.
For those who want cheaper veggies...Lidl very often have lots of veggies on half price offer. and as Entwisi says you do need some fat in your diet to absorb the fat soluble vitamins A D E & K. |
Re: Healthy eating
If you suddenly cut fat out of your diet wont the body go into 'famine mode' and conserve the fat you already have in your body.. that also means that it will keep hold of any fat you do eat?

Re: Healthy eating
I have slipped badly with healthy eating this past year.
Previous to this i had lost 6 and a half stone and was feeling great but i have put 4 stone back on which isn' so great! I have lost a few pounds recently though, eating better again and exercising again so fingers crossed! I have to say though they don't make it easy to buy healthier food,Everything is so much more expensive than junk food,if the goverment is serious about the obesity crisis surely it should be the other way round? |
Re: Healthy eating
I would never go on a diet that cut out any of the major food groups, and most certainly wont be cutting out fat! I want to lose a stone I think, though I don't think I will get down to that any time soon.

Re: Healthy eating
I don't want to upset you, Blazey, but cutting out alcoholic drinks is a good way to help to lose weight. :( There are far more calories in beer and wine than you might think.
Your best bet is to eat sensibly, go for plenty of fruit and veg, but don't give up everything you like eating - just eat it less often - and try to take a little bit more exercise. I'm not saying you don't exercise now but if, for instance, you walk a mile every day, walk 2 miles and walk a bit faster. :) |

Not going into what I eat, do like something of everything and adore veg and salads. Just the best advice I can give is .. get away from that table before your tummy starts to feel distended (don't feel guilty about leaving something on your platter). Not good to come away saying you are full to burst (that is the fine line between need and gluttony) You know the signs when this starts happens. Just now heard a report this minute that fruit and veg. have gone up more than convenience foods .. 'tis bad. |

I suppose there is very little food that we would eat if we got microscopes to it, for instance salad and fruit must contain some insects or small insect parts. We used to have a mass of blackbuerries growing our garden and I masde them into jam. When I was spreading some I found a (still live) small caterpillar in the jar!!! |
Re: Healthy eating
how was it still live polly? from my very limited knowledge, always thought jam was heated when making.

Re: Healthy eating
I am aware of the calorie content in alcohol, but realistically I wont get through my degree without a drink or 5, so I am cutting down on things like chocolate and ice cream instead.
I always walk into town, and sometimes back from uni to my house, and if anyone knows anything about Lancaster they will know that the Uni is out of the city, and St Martins is about 40 minutes walk away. I am not severely overweight so I am not going to cut things out completely that I am used to eating, because I dont really want to feel grumpy and lethargic when my exams begin in a few days! I only really need to lose a few pounds, but I just think it'd be nice to lose a stone so then I'm at a healthy, slender weight. |
Re: Healthy eating
emmm ya not gonna cut out ya fat?
I always thought to lose weight ya had to cut down on what ya eating now, and that means FAT! Oh well i must be wrong:rolleyes: but if i am ...i wonder how iv lost my weight...emmm....oh yes, by cutting down:D |

Everyone knows a healthy diet isn't about cutting out things. Recommended daily allowance of fat is 70g a day for a woman. How much do you get on weight watchers? 2000 calories for a woman a day. A lot of diets go much lower than this, but if I look on my tube of smarties, the calories for a 5-10 yr old child is 1800 calories, so I'd probably be eating less calories a day than a fiver year old if I cut out all my fat, which isn't recommended by any good nutritionist, regardless of what weight watchers suggest. Weight Watchers is a business at the end of the day, and any other dieting programme with a brand like Slimmers world for example. They want your money. Cutting out fat in one go would essentially be a crash diet, an you'd just put all the weight back on when you eat normally, and go straight back to weight watchers :p I know people that have been on WW for years, I wonder why that is :p |
Re: Healthy eating
Healthy eating, huh! it was used by my mother as a form of birth control!
When my brother and I were teenagers if one of us was putting some extra effort into getting ready for a Saturday night out, (because of a date), you could guarantee that tea would be delayed and we would end up with a salad just before we went out. No use complaining or just picking out the bits you wanted to eat the plate HAD to be cleared or Mum would go into guilt mode and we would never be forgiven for leaving something. So along with the lettuce, cucumber, (burp), radishes, (even bigger burp) and hard boiled eggs, there would be spring onion and raw onion on the plate all of which had to be consumed. No matter how you cleaned your teeth after that you just couldn't get rid of the 'onion' breath. Of course as the evening wears on the effect of the eggs mixed with beer had an added effect on the digestive system! So what chance would you have of scoring with anyone that night? :s_fart: |
Re: Healthy eating
Could have been worse, and she could have served you a currie..

Re: Healthy eating
its a lot easier if you have a meal without salad ( meat or fish ) potatoes/rice/pasta and then have fruit as your pudding
use your veg intake as snacks - eg cut up a pepper so it is to hand when you feel peckish - that way when you feel the need to munch you are fitting in your veg potions my favourite raw veg snacks are mange tout or sugar snap peas, cherry tomatoes and carrots ( dont bother peeling or cutting it just bite the ends off spit em at someone you dont like :D ) and chomp away. any veg can be eaten raw but i must admit i dont do raw broccoli or cauliflower eww i dont mind the odd mushroom raw but too many i find are sickening be careful what fruit you snack on - pears and grapes are the worst for having a high sugar content. try to get into the habit of eating every two hours ( no not chocolate) drink water before each meal and of course - have breakfast works better than a diet |
Re: Healthy eating
I don't know what to eat for my tea tonight. I had some amazing moroccan chilli chicken and chick pea soup yesterday from sainsbury's taste the difference range. Was delicious!
