Paper rounds...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7431224.stm
Ok im being nosy... but just read this on the bbc website about paper rounds - that newsagents are stopping home deliveries because they cant get the kids to do the paper rounds and they are also losing out to supermarkets etc. So did you do a paper round? How much did you get paid? I used to do one round mon - sat up over sherfin and down to lower stonefold on the other side and back down to rising bridge 6 nights a week for which i got the princely sum of £2. Then i'd do the same round on Sunday but i was my own employer - and get roundabout another £2.50. Some of the wages that they say they get now £20 a week i would have been oh so happy with that. When i started the paper round my dad stopped my spending money - he said i was earning now and that was that. Wasnt fair....:( |
Re: Paper rounds...
By the way the poll is a multiple choice one - so you can vote for more than one!!!

Re: Paper rounds...
I cant remember how much i used to get, i know my dad stopped my spending money when i started it tho..

Re: Paper rounds...
Not a flippin' clue what I used to get paid :D
|
Re: Paper rounds...
My paper's delivered by the newsagent himself, probably because no one wants the job.

Re: Paper rounds...
i used to do mornings and nights and Sundays and the free weekly paper (not in the same year though) i used to get £4.50 a week for doing the free paper, there always seemed to be hundreds of them to be delivered, no wonder i have a bad back now...i think i used to get £5 a week for doing the morning/night/sunday papers

Re: Paper rounds...
1961/62, the going rate in Gt.Harwood was 1/- per round , same for mornings and evenings , ...total 12/- (12 shillings per week) think the Saturday pink was 1/6d not sure about the Sundays didn't do them
Either Wednesday or Thursday mornings were the worst, all the womens mags came out that day, similar with Fridays , the TV and Radio Times . |
Re: Paper rounds...
to be honest, i think a lot of parents have concerns about the childs safety. At the end of the day, especially in the winter, you have children out in the dark, at regular times each day delivering papers. I wouldnt be happy with my son doing this, (when he's older obviously)

Re: Paper rounds...
i know what you mean Nicky, today isnt like when we where kids is it, more stabbings and shootings going on, i wont be letting Reece do a paper round for the simple reason that its too tying, i tend to get up some mornings and just decide to go somewhere there and then, if he had a paper round we wouldnt be able to do that, i will encourage him to get a saturday job when he's old enough though

Re: Paper rounds...
seem to remember it was mentioned in another thread a few months ago about kids from the local area having to have a medical exam somewhere up near the old Accy baths if they wanted to have a paper route , if memory serves, the minimum age was 13 .

Re: Paper rounds...
I never had a paper round, the local papershop already had a paperboy and that was my brother!
But to be honest, I dont think that I would be too happy at my neice or nephew doing a paper round, just dont think its safe for them to be wandering the streets alone during the winter mornings and evenings |
Re: Paper rounds...
I used to help my brother when i was younger, but never got one meself.
These days people arnt safe anymore :(....ya dont know whos lurking around the corner:eek: |

Re: Paper rounds...
Our newsagent is having a problem on Sundays as his Sunday paper deliverer gave up. He often delivers them himself, by car, but has to wait until he has help in the shop (grocers/off licence) before he can get out. Instead of reading the paper after breakfast it's more often after lunch.
This is a semi-rural area and not really frequented by knife-wielding or gun-toting nomarks. The daily (Monday to Saturday) paper boy delivers on his bike before going to the High School at 8 a.m. and the weekly free paper is delivered by a lad who runs the whole round, after school, in his shorts and singlet. Sunday mornings, though, they obviously all want a lie-in. I suppose I can't blame them. :D |
Re: Paper rounds...
Phil and I have two sons who both have paper rounds, they work 7-8am, Mon-Sat and get £15 a week each.

Re: Paper rounds...
I've been a complete doughnut. I selected 'no' instead of 'yes - free paper/weekly'.
Sorry! |
Re: Paper rounds...
I did mornings & Evenings alright in Summer, rubbish in Winter
I also did Sundays which were the more lucrative rounds, but bag used to weigh a ton with all the supplements that were in them! But best of the lot was a collection round on Friday Evenings collecting from the Large Houses in Reedley who did not go into the paper shop to pay their bills I went to them, used to get £3 plus 10% of what I collected which was usually another £3 apart from once a month when the monthly bill payers paid and it could be up to a tenner extra:) But Christmas was the best, Tips galore:) Happy Days:) |
Re: Paper rounds...
I was a paper girl.
I delivered morning papers, Sunday papers and the free Citizen paper. Delivering the Citizen was the worst. People used to say 'Do you want to hang it up in my bathroom? That's all it's good for.' I quite enjoyed delivering the morning and Sunday ones though. :) I didn't enjoy it quite so much when it was pelting with rain/hailstone/snow but, looking at it from an adult's perspective, paper rounds sure do teach kids the importance of getting up on time in a morning, punctuality, being reliable and turning up even when you might not feel like it. It's such a shame that parents are now fearful of letting their kids do paper rounds. My two are only young at the moment but when they get to 13/14 I will consider it. I suppose you have to weigh it up....how many kids do paper rounds every day for years without anything bad happening to them versus how many kids come to harm as a result of doing their paper rounds. As was mentioned in the thread about Bernadette's grandson, we cannot be afraid to let kids have a bit of independence. |
Re: Paper rounds...
the only thing i enjoyed about delivering the free newspapers (the Herald and Post as it was then) was the christmas tips you got, i remember me and our Kelly going around Cranbourne Drive and getting £13 in tips from that one street, back in 1989 that was quite a lot of money for a kid, i think we ended up with 50 ish quid that year, mind you we had to deliver a hell of a lot of papers all year round to earn those tips

Re: Paper rounds...
This thread brought back some memories! My older brother, sister, and I all had paper "routes" (my younger brother and sister were bums, only helping with Sunday morning deliveries out the back of mi dad's station wagon). The rest of the week, we delivered the evening paper via our bicycles with baskets.
The total route was about 3 miles with around 80 customers. Collection days (Friday) was both the best ($$$$$$) but took alot of time. Ya had to knock on each door and usually have a bit of a natter, especially with the older neighbors! I guess we made about $30 a week which wasn't bad back in the late 60s/early 70s. Brian (LYY) |
Re: Paper rounds...
My two used to have a paper round cannot remember what the weekly wage was but they sure got a lot in Christmas tips, I foolishly told the youngest whatever she got I would double for spending money on a school holiday she got £100 and I'm talking about 1981 ..........
