Fish? and Chips

When I was browsing MySupermarket to make up a Tesco delivery order, I noticed a special offer
Tesco Fish and Chips - 5of, for £4

I am not accustomed to buying ready meals but thought this one was worth trying because 'no artificial colours, flavourings or preservatives'

I wondered 'how can they do it at that price? - must be what is known as a 'loss leader'

After dishing it up and tasting it (and serving 90% of it to the cat), I realise that you only get what you pay for.

The chips were - well - chips and OK, but the fish!
... it looked like haddock but there were a lot of 'grey bits', and it was mushy textured.

A search of the packaging does not identify the fish used
Does anyone know?

Re: Fish? and Chips

Alaskan Pollack?

Ive had a nosy and thats what it says.

and heres what wiki says about pollack....

Quote:

Atlantic pollock is largely considered to be a white fish, although it is a fairly strongly flavored one. In the United Kingdom it has previously been largely consumed as an economic and versatile alternative to cod and haddock in the West Country, elsewhere being known mostly for its traditional use as "Pollack for puss / coley for the cat." However, in recent years pollock has become more popular due to over-fishing of cod and haddock. It can now be found in most supermarkets as fresh fillets or pre-prepared freezer items.

Because of its slightly gray color pollock is often prepared, as in Norway, as fried fish balls or if juvenile sized maybe breaded with oatmeal and fried as in Shetland. Year old fish are traditionally split, salted and dried over a peat hearth in Orkney where their texture becomes wooden and somewhat phosphorescent. The fish can also be salted and smoked and achieve a salmon like orange color as is the case in Germany where the fish is also known as seelachs or sea salmon.

Alaskan pollock has a much milder taste, whiter color and lower oil content. High quality, single frozen whole Alaskan pollock fillets may be layered into a block mold and deep frozen to produce fish blocks that are used throughout Europe and North America as the raw material for high quality breaded and battered fish products. Lower quality, double-frozen fillets or minced trim pieces may also be frozen in block forms and used as raw material for lower quality, low-cost breaded and battered fish sticks, portions, etc.

Single frozen Alaskan Pollock is considered to be the premier raw material for surimi; the most common use of surimi in the United States is "imitation crabmeat" (also known as crab stick).

Alaskan pollock is commonly used in the fast food industry, for example the fish filet of Dairy Queen,[2] Arby's, and Burger King are also made from Alaskan pollock. As stated on the packaging of the product, McDonald's uses Hoki and/or pollock in their Filet-O-Fish sandwich.[3]

I think it's Gordon Ramsey or one of the other TV chefs who really rate Pollock as an alternative to Cod.

I bought some to use in a fish curry, but I can't say I was over impressed.

I have taken note of the advice and 'splashed out' buying
Cod in Mediterranean Sauce £2
The sauce was southern side of the Med - Moroccan boiled sweaty socks
Even the cat wouldn't eat this one

Re: Fish? and Chips

we've been byuying teh Vietnamese River Cobbler that Tesco sell. Just dust in seasoned flour and fry for a couple of minutes and its lovely. delicate flesh with a nice haddock-esque taste. Never had a bone in it either.

Its also dead cheap at ~£2.50 a lb. :D

I've also used it in a Thai fish curry with some mussels, king prawns spinach and peppers and it was delicious.

I quess the toxic waste adds a lttle flavor ... I think I mentioned this before, but when I was young ... oh, so many moons ago ... we used to call the Hyndburn, the Stink; so that is probably a no no for fishing. There must be somewhere you guys can fish. I can't imagine life without fishing ... or fishing without a cooler full of beer:theband:
