where to go for a birthday meal for teenagers who are skint?

Mimi, who can't remember her password so asked me to post the question, would like to know if anyone can recommend somewhere for her and her friends to go for a birthday meal which will not cost much and which they can get to easily because most of them do not drive.

Any suggestions?

Redcap willow, £3.50 each and not a bad meal

Re: where to go for a birthday meal for teenagers who are skint?

Yep, that was my first suggestion too and she knows the carvery is good but it's the how to get there that is bothering her about that as it's a sort of in-betweeny place. Are there buses in the evenings?

of course there are buses willow, the number 1 from accy to darwen stops right outside, then theres what used to be the Hyndburn circular

WillowTheWhisp 18-06-2008 18:36

Re: where to go for a birthday meal for teenagers who are skint?

Do they still run in the evenings? Buses stop coming up our way at tea time. It's mad.

flashy 18-06-2008 18:37

Re: where to go for a birthday meal for teenagers who are skint?

lol sorry i meant to put that, yes they still run up until about 11.30pm, its a major bus route isnt it

WillowTheWhisp 18-06-2008 18:40

Re: where to go for a birthday meal for teenagers who are skint?

Right, that's a good one then.

Also thought of Gamecock, will need to ask about transport there too.

flashy 18-06-2008 18:43

Re: where to go for a birthday meal for teenagers who are skint?

i think with the gamecock she might have to get the old hyndburn circular to harwood then walk down, unless they do a bus down there in the evenings, maybe the clitheroe bus if that still runs?

Lilly 18-06-2008 21:01

Re: where to go for a birthday meal for teenagers who are skint?

Good on your daughter for getting the bus.

Most teenagers I know expect their parents to drop them off and pick them up even in the small hours of the following morning and the daft parents do it! Madness.

Re the meal, I like Monte Cristo at Church.

Good food and not too dear. :)

Re: where to go for a birthday meal for teenagers who are skint?

I did this for my son a few weeks back.
All his mates from work kept inviting him round to thiers for tea etc, so I let him do the same here.
He bought all the stuff and I cooked (didnt want any one goin down with food poisoning lol) and I did a bbq for them
He had a few of his mates around they all brought some beer then after the bbq they all sat in the dining room and I just left them to get on with it . they were all well behaved and it worked well .
Of course this is only good if you have the room and thankfully I have a a lounge and seperate dining room which I use for the kids to entertain mates

Re: where to go for a birthday meal for teenagers who are skint?

Willow, you don't mention how old Mimi and her friends are. Some 'pubs' may be wary of a group of kids coming in unacompanied( especially in these days of police being super keen on under age drinking.)

If they are under 16/18 then I would recommend ringing the place and speaking to the manager to let them know to expect them and leave your number in case there are any problems or questions. It will certainly put the pub at ease and the staff will not be worried about them "doinga runner" or anything.

Just my experience of when I was assistant manaager at the Redcap

WillowTheWhisp 19-06-2008 07:19

Re: where to go for a birthday meal for teenagers who are skint?

Thanks Ian. That thought hadn't crossed my mind as all the kids I know are not the sort who would do a runner. She has been with a few friends to Bentley Wood Farm for a meal (she went in friend's car that time) which her friend arranged and there weren't any problems then. I will bear it in mind though. They range from late teens to early twenties.

We couldn't have a barbecue whatever the weather is like because we literally do not have the room. Our back yard is an L-shaped path full of wheelie bin and recycling bags/boxes and a few tubs with plants in. There is barely enough room to walk to the backyard door.

As for having them all in the house, I don't think it would feel like a birthday 'do' as they quite often have friends round to the house and she wants to do something special and different and adult.

flashy 19-06-2008 08:03

Re: where to go for a birthday meal for teenagers who are skint?

you cant actually do a runner from the redcap....you pay for your meal as you go in at the bar and they give you a ticket which you have to give to the chef who is dishing out the meats, really kid proof....willow if she hasnt much money tell her to buy herself a blackcurrant and soda (lemonade really not soda) they only cost 30p for half a pint, dead cheap and a lot cheaper than a coke

WillowTheWhisp 19-06-2008 08:13

Re: where to go for a birthday meal for teenagers who are skint?

Thanks Flashy - I should have realised that because we went to a Pub and Carvery a few weeks ago and they did they same thing. I'll still check with them though to see if they have any objections to a party of young people. I know BWF don't because she's going there again tonight with another friend - hence why she wanted to go somewhere different. When a bunch of them went a few weeks ago they were very welcome.

flashy 19-06-2008 08:16

Re: where to go for a birthday meal for teenagers who are skint?

i dont suppose it really matters, if they are well mannered and well behaved then that should be fine, how else are kids supposed to be brought into the 'real world' if you know what i mean

WillowTheWhisp 19-06-2008 08:36

Re: where to go for a birthday meal for teenagers who are skint?

They seem like a very well behaved crowd to me - in fact a lot less rowdy than a crowd of adults who were at the Royal Phoenix once when we went there. It never crossed my mind that the pub may object to them until Ian said that. But then again he has had experience.

I am sure he can sort out the email address as well seeing as he knows all of you. It's not as though you are trying to steal someone else's account.

I work at Redcap Garage, which is before the motorway bridge, and we're classed as Blackburn also. We have the same postcode as the pub.

It's not that simple. AccyWeb will not accept her current email address. It doesn't like the format for some reason so she needs to sort herself another email address out first of a type which it does like before Mick can change it to that. Meanwhile she's either at college or working or out with her mates so hasn't had chance to do that yet.

They all went out for another friend's birthday last night and went to BWF again.

Mimi has settled on the Redcap for hers. She fancies that because she knows what to expect from the food. She's a bit fussy, doesn't do Chinese or Indian or Thai or Mongolian ......... you wouldn't think she was my daughter would you? :D

well as my dad told me the other day, Rishton is now Hyndburn NOT Blackburn, so how cant the redcap be in Rishton if its classed as Blackburn? i thought this too the other week when we where all on about it, i thought about the motorway not being there and then it would have been classed as Rishton but it seems it isnt?

It was closed for a while but it's been renovated and re-opened. I think it's a bit more upmarket than spud pie these days.

Red caps alright, but what do you do after?

Get the the Chinese Buffet in Blackburn, where the borough pub used to be near the old cinima.

About £7.00 PP and last time I went the food was very good, plus you can eat as much as you want Including deserts (and they have a chocolate fountain).

Plus when finished your in Blackburn Town centre for a few drinks.;)
