What would you be.....
.....if you didn't do the job that you did?
In an attempt to lighten the mood somewhat from the tone of late. We all had these dreams when we were younger - I'm not just talking about the ballerina, footballer ones - but the more realistic ones. For a long while I wanted to be a vet - until I was told they have to study for seven years!!!!! Then i wanted to be a social worker - but was told I couldn't start studying until I was 21!!!!! How about the rest of you? |

Re: What would you be.....
I wanted to be a vet when I was a kid but the thought of euthanasing someone's pet put me off. Then I wanted to be a lawyer but couldn't stand the thought of going to college because I knew that there was no way I could afford to go to Uni at the time..:(
All my Uni studying has been done in later life and paid for by myself, whilst working full time. I'm glad that I do what I do but it aint arf stressful sometimes.:) If I could afford to finish work and do something which earned next to no money but was enjoyable, I'd have a stab at conservation work (preferably in Galapagos, New Zealand or Australia)..:D |

Re: What would you be.....
I too fancied being a vet until I realised the sciences were not my best subjects at school. I "flirted" with farming too but, short of marrying a farmer, I knew it was unlikely I'd make much of a career of it.
Strange as it may seem, I liked the idea of the Civil Service from the age of 15 and, for my sins, that's where I ended up. I always had a secret fantasy, though, that one evening I would be at a concert, dance or whatever and the singer (Big Band or Jazz, to my liking) would collapse on stage. Up I would rush, blushing modestly, and say, "Perhaps I can help you out", whereupon I would be "discovered". It never happened so I had to make do with Folk and Jazz Clubs and Whitby Operatic Society. :D Incidentally, my other career was wife/mum. I think I was quite good at that. |
Re: What would you be.....
I always wanted to be a nurse...and as a small child I would never miss an opportunity to dress up and do the bandaging bit.
It took me quite a while to realise this dream, but realise it I did, and spent 29 very happy years doing a job that I loved. In some of my fantasies though I would have loved to have been a drama queen...treading the boards...just as long as I didn't have to sing......I can't carry a tune in a bucket. |
Re: What would you be.....
I always wanted to be a doctor .... but when I finally got my Ph.D., I found out I had become the wrong sort of doctor, and they wouldn't let me cut people open or humiliate them.:(
Anyone know of somebody who needs a bibliographer .... willing to work for beer:thepint: |
Re: What would you be.....
It was my dream to be a nurse but was not to be as my hearing is not perfect. Would have got a great sense of satisfaction knowing that I was helping people.
|
Re: What would you be.....
I always wanted to be a biologist, as I loved nature and the outdoors. I've no idea what type of job I'd have done, but I always told people that was what I wanted to be.
Today, I'd have liked to have been a chef. I think I'd have got a lot of pleasure from that. |

But if I had to choose something different it would be a proffesional Snooker player, I played 7 days a week when I was younger and was quite good, but then I got married and was snookered from then on:D

Re: What would you be.....
Being retired I don’t have a job.
But I was content with my navy career even though the powers that be felt that I was more suited to radio electronics than my choice of electrician and it was only family that saw me leave. Once in industry I was happy in my job winding transformers from tiny little diddy ones the size of a thumb nail to great big hulking brutes and eventually taking over as foreman of the department until the rug was dragged out from under my feet and redundancy reared its ugly head. So the only thing that I would have changed is the redundancy bit. |
Re: What would you be.....
When I was at school I thought of being a journalist or teacher.
If I had my choice again I would be a private detective or genealogist :) |

Re: What would you be.....
Problem with a career is that it is relatively simple to choose, but difficult and time consuming to achieve ... careers are a lot like women, you chase, you catch, and then wonder why you went to all the trouble:hidewall: I studied hard for years to get my degree ... (you can call me Doctor if you want a free beer) ... but when I got a job teaching at Queen's, I found that there was too much beaurocratic bs for my liking ... it came to a head when some officious idiot, Vice-Principal of Academic Affairs or something ... told me I had to set a final exam ... and this in a class of five students!!!!! (Not too many interested in Introduction to Medieaval Icelandic Language and Literature) ... I told him where to go and what mode of transport to take, and quit. Just too much non essential crap assosciated with the job. So I bought a couple of cabs, and ran a small and not very profitable business for a while .... but I was happy ... still am ... and even though I sold my cabs and leased out the plates, I still go out and drive, usually at night so I can see humanity at its most drunken and stupid level, and have a good laugh.:D

I would have liked to be a Game Warden or a Forest Ranger. In this dream line, I guess I would always had settle for being a . . . Lumberjack, then I'd be okay, sleep all night and . . . well, you get the picture. I love the knickers they wear!:p

Re: What would you be.....
I'd love to be a butcher if money was no object, however I reckon I'd get bored with that too quickly
motorcycle racer is one I'd love a go at but I'm too fat and old to be competitive. otherwise, the man who runs the deck chairs on a nice sunny beach somewhere, actualy I'd have 3 or 4 lots on different beaches so I can have a variety of views. :D |
