How to care for a Patio Rose????

I have been given a patio rose (think he opted for this instead of cut flowers so he wouldn't have to buy them again ) but I have no idea of how to care for this, there were no instructions or anything on it

Can anyone tell me how to look after this plant

Thanks

Right, Emzy, let's get down to looking after this rose before it ends up just a twig. :D

First, I presume it's in a good sized pot. If it isn't, transplant it into a pot at least 12" diameter and the same deep. You need John Innes No 2 or similar compost. After that it's easy, just water it when it doesn't rain (don't drown it but make sure the compost gets nice and moist), give it a bit of liquid feed once a month from April to October and dead-head regularly to keep it flowering. :)

If I lived nearer I'd come and do it for you. ;)

Repotting: Put some "crocking" in the bottom of your larger pot - that's bits of broken plantpot, stones, bits of slate, anything that will help the pot to drain. Put about 4" of compost in the pot. Take the rose, with its roots and soil, out of the small pot - if you soak it in a bucket of water for an hour first it should come out OK. Put it in the new pot then fill the pot with compost (pack it down the sides and make sure the roots are covered) and water it. Done! Oh, you can plant it in a flower bed if you want, they don't have to live in pots.

Deadheading: Snip every dead flower head off with secateurs or scissors. You can prune the plant by cutting off up to about 6" of the stem. The more dead ones you cut off the more new ones you get.

Good luck. :)

Not re-potted it yet, but have cut the dead ones off. And this pruning you talk of, when do I do this??

No special time. If you think it looks a bit straggly, cut about 6" off the stems. Make the cut just above a leaf or leaf bud.

I found this, which may help.

i have had a patio rose for three years, it blooms twice a year, gets an exta bud every year, and i never touch it except to pull any weeds out of the pot, that is the best sort, maybe you have guessed, i am no gardener

Re: How to care for a Patio Rose????

The easiest way, IMO, to look after any plant, is to make sure it has water when needed, snip off dead flowers and give it some plant food every now and then....easy...;)

It works for me:D
