Does anyone have ..... ?

Need a quick recipe for dumplings .... puhleese .... so that I can make a stick-to-your-ribs chicken stew .... c'mon lads and lasses help out a poor starving colonial ..... again:D

Re: Does anyone have ..... ?

3oz suet, 6oz self raising and 150ml of water & some seasoning.

Just mix it all together to make a sricky dough. Roll into balls and dust with flour. Place in the pan of stew and cook for about 20 mins, when they have all risen to top, they should be ready.

They are also quite nice with some mixed herbs added into the mix.

Re: Does anyone have ..... ?

liek you ever make dumplings love!

Eric, its me that does em in our house, its a shuffle of flour followed by a shake of suet( some where between 40-50%suet), then a drop of water to make a slightly sticky dough. I liek to add some mixed herbs and a touch of sea salt and cracked pepper as well.

Re: Does anyone have ..... ?

Mix together 4 tablespoons of S R flour, 2 tablespoons of shredded suet and a good pinch of salt. You can add mixed herbs if you like, about 1 tbspoon. When it's thoroughly combined add cold water, a few drops at a time, mixing until you have a stiff dough. Separate into lumps of dough and roll them in your palms into balls (it's as well to dust them with flour before and during this bit - otherwise you end up with dough gloves and not much dumpling).

Drop your dumplings into the stew/gravy/soup/whatever (when it's already cooking) and simmer on a low heat for about 20 minutes.

:)

I like my Dumplings in with mince and onions I just go off the instructions on the packet of Atora…4oz flour to 2oz suet, add seasoning, enough water to make a decent dough and chuck what I made in the pan of mince for 20min.

Are there no instructions on the packet Eric

You married a star Buttonsmum ... :D

Back to the dumplings .. Eric has already stated (in another thread) .. no self-raising flour available in Canada (?) ... peasants ! so he had sussed it with plain and Baking Powder ... 1 teaspoon to 4 oz of plain. Ok ... all info., given by Buttonsmum correct, only advice I can give is that, of course, they do swell, so you need to gage it to finish up with Golf Balls rather than Footballs.

Sure ya' can get it Eric .. just ask around.

Right ... and that means I would have to fly over the pond and spend hours explaining to limeys that I am not a yank:D But I did find a store in the Kensington area of TO that sells suet and other "ethnic" English foods like Melton Mowbray pork pies ... so I can stock up on "stuff" .... thanks for the help guys, all joking apart, I really do appreciate the help. And if anyone needs help with recipes that include seal flippers, I will return the favor ... oops sorry, favour;)

Peasants!!!!!!!!!!! I know that we are a little rural in most parts of Canada; but peasants, sheesh. And I did find self raising flour at Tara Foods downtown ... so there;) May the fleas of a thousand grizzlies infest your armpits:D

If you want the dumplings to go in a chicken stew........add a good pinch of sage to the dry mix......this will make your dumplings extra delicious.
I use sage and onion stuffing mix in my dumplings (for chicken dishes anyway), but I am not sure if they have such a delicacy over there where you are.

Bears, hon, .... cute and cuddly, if you are ever in Canada, feel free to pet one:D And the momma bears just love it if you pick up their cubs and try to take them home;) Kodiaks are the sweetest natured of the bunch, like Polar Bears they are very friendly, and love humans so much they invite them to dinner.

Well, I 'aint got Goldilocks hair Eric .... so will give it a miss.

Not a bad idea .... but I want to get down and dirty, and make something English ethnic .... sort of a "roots" thing;) I remember that my gran used to make them and they were great, as were her steak and kidney puddings (my next project) ... but if I fail, I will visit the store of my buddy, Mario Gencarelli, and try the gnocchi mix.

Yup ... you got it right ... keep working at it and you will be able to speak Canadian in no time, eh. And the key is to say "eh" at least four times in one sentence:alright: And would those be grizzly "balls" That might be difficult, because I don't think a bear would react kindly to having its balls rubbed in flour.:D

I dont appreciate suet, so if I ever make dumplings I just use butter instead - (in standard shortcrust pastry recipe proportions).

What do you folks see so special about suet?
Can you detect a flavour difference?

Dunno if I can detect a flavour difference, always had suet Dumplings, was unaware you could make them with butter.

Because they start off totally immersed, they dont get crusty like a cobbler crust would.

So you want to give the bear a little more entertainment for the last few seconds of your life, before he chases you down and rips you to pieces:eek: We aint talking Yogi and Booboo here;) I was thinking more in terms of making sure there is no garbage or leftovers in your camp, taking notice of all posted warnings, checking with the park rangers about bear sightings ... little things that keep you alive. And in areas which are not designated National, Provincial, or Regional parks, have a gun handy, one that packs some punch. I think that what you see on TV is nowhere near real life situations Eric, on the TV the bear always loses:rolleyes: but as you say, in real life in your neck of the woods, its entirely different. As from our point of view we ain't actually going to be confronted by a bear in Foxhill Bank nature reserve:D
