Does anyone have ..... ?

|
Re: Does anyone have ..... ?
3oz suet, 6oz self raising and 150ml of water & some seasoning.
Just mix it all together to make a sricky dough. Roll into balls and dust with flour. Place in the pan of stew and cook for about 20 mins, when they have all risen to top, they should be ready. They are also quite nice with some mixed herbs added into the mix. |
Re: Does anyone have ..... ?
liek you ever make dumplings love!
Eric, its me that does em in our house, its a shuffle of flour followed by a shake of suet( some where between 40-50%suet), then a drop of water to make a slightly sticky dough. I liek to add some mixed herbs and a touch of sea salt and cracked pepper as well. |
Re: Does anyone have ..... ?
I do on the odd occassion, but as you're the qualified chef I like to leave the cooking to you.

Re: Does anyone have ..... ?
Mix together 4 tablespoons of S R flour, 2 tablespoons of shredded suet and a good pinch of salt. You can add mixed herbs if you like, about 1 tbspoon. When it's thoroughly combined add cold water, a few drops at a time, mixing until you have a stiff dough. Separate into lumps of dough and roll them in your palms into balls (it's as well to dust them with flour before and during this bit - otherwise you end up with dough gloves and not much dumpling).
Drop your dumplings into the stew/gravy/soup/whatever (when it's already cooking) and simmer on a low heat for about 20 minutes. :) |
Re: Does anyone have ..... ?

Re: Does anyone have ..... ?
I like my Dumplings in with mince and onions I just go off the instructions on the packet of Atora…4oz flour to 2oz suet, add seasoning, enough water to make a decent dough and chuck what I made in the pan of mince for 20min.
Are there no instructions on the packet Eric  |

Back to the dumplings .. Eric has already stated (in another thread) .. no self-raising flour available in Canada (?) ... peasants ! so he had sussed it with plain and Baking Powder ... 1 teaspoon to 4 oz of plain. Ok ... all info., given by Buttonsmum correct, only advice I can give is that, of course, they do swell, so you need to gage it to finish up with Golf Balls rather than Footballs. Sure ya' can get it Eric .. just ask around. |

Re: Does anyone have ..... ?
If you want the dumplings to go in a chicken stew........add a good pinch of sage to the dry mix......this will make your dumplings extra delicious.
I use sage and onion stuffing mix in my dumplings (for chicken dishes anyway), but I am not sure if they have such a delicacy over there where you are. |

Re: Does anyone have ..... ?
I dont appreciate suet, so if I ever make dumplings I just use butter instead - (in standard shortcrust pastry recipe proportions).
What do you folks see so special about suet? Can you detect a flavour difference? |

Margaret: Isn't your mix what is mainly used for a cobbler ? Becomes more biscuit.
Eric: Don't forget to sift your flour first. |

Eric, remember Practise makes perfect! keep trying!
Have you thought of writing/emailing Atora and asing if they have a distributor in canada? You never know? PS found this http://www.abitofhome.ca/page/C1/PROD/4081601 Not cheap (£2.50 for a quids worth of suet but hey!) I know its veggie but it works well as I sometimes use it |
