We come along on Saturday morning......

Hi,

Did anyone else go to the Odeon on a Saturday morning in the early 50's. As you came out of the main doors of the cinema onto Broadway, over the road was a green hording which was there for years and years. On it was some writing, dawbed in white paint and I can't remember the whole sentence. Perhaps someone can fill in the blank for me. It said:-

"Our sons must not die for...........................................in America"

One thing I do remember, however, are the words to the song we used to sing before the commencement of the picture show. I wonder how many of you out there sang along to this:

We come along on Saturday morning,
Greeting everybody with a smile,
We come along on Saturday morning,
Knowing it's well worthwhile,
As members of the Odeon club,
We all intend to be,
Good citizens when we grow up,
And champions of the free,
We come along on Saturday morning,
Greeting everybody with a smile, smile, smile,
Greeting everybody with a smile.

I'm just a bit too young to remember anything on that site except the "Old" market. However, I do remember the song. Thanks for that horrendously cringe-making moment. I also remember that they used to play the National Anthem at the begining of all their screening sessions while they showed a picture of The Queen on horseback, when did that cease to be fashionable?

Hmmmmmmmm, I thought the national anthem was played at the end of theatre/film sessions. Most people stood up from their seats and didn't leave the cinema until the anthem had finished. I wonder how many people would stand still for it now!

Yes indeed Mez. The Saturday morning picture show was undoubtedly the highlight of my week back then. I particularly loved the westerns, my all time favourite cowboy being Roy Rogers and his fabulous horse Trigger. I still love the old western movies even today at 61 years old. On a Saturday here, on one of the cable channels, there is a "Rough and Ready Saturday" feature, which shows westerns all day long. It usually starts off in the morning with a couple of old feature movies and in the afternoon they play re-runs of all the old great TV Western series. I get to watch, Wagon Train, Rawhide, The Virginian, Rifleman, Bonanza, The High Chaperalle and The Big Valley. My wife has terrible trouble trying to drag me away from the TV on a Saturday as you can imagine.

Some people never grow up.

Growing older is mandatory, growing up is optional.
