I'm sure there was a similar conversation with somebody a few months ago and I stand to be corrected, but students come under the same rules for tax as anybody else. The reason they rarely pay any is because they don't work long enough in a year to get past the threshold figure. If you are earning more than £6,035 a year then you pay tax.

Re: Tax

Best thing you can do is just look at your take home pay, it gets frightening looking at the tax taken out especially when you lok at the total
I could live off what I give the tax men

Do you have to buy tools, boots, overall's etc? or even wash your own overall's, you can claim for these, only a bit but every little helps

Re: Tax

You can check what you should get here :

Payslip checker

and your tax code should be 603L

Re: Tax

If you are in any doubt, ring the HMRC help-line and ask. The number will be in your phone book.

The person you speak to will check if you have the correct, cumulative code number and, if not, may be able to sort it out while you are on the phone.

BR means you are being taxed at Basic Rate and you have not been given any allowances. This can apply if you have 2 jobs (allowances can only be given against one employment) but it is sometimes operated by some large employers when new people start with them who haven't provided a P45(3). They shouldn't really do it, they should operate a normal code number on a week 1 basis (in other words, not cumulative) and send a P46 to HMRC, but it does mean they are covered if the employee has other employment - and so is the employee. A lot of Call Centres do it as they employ a lot of part-timers who have other jobs.

Assuming this is your only employment and you don't receive any pension or other form of taxable payment you shouldn't be on Code BR so, as I said before, ring HMRC. It shouldn't take long to sort out and you may be in line for a repayment of the tax you've overpaid. I must stress I am speaking in general terms here as I don't know all your personal circumstances. I do, however, know what I'm talking about - being ex-HMRC.

Get on that phone tomorrow! You'll get back anything you shouldn't have paid. :)

Re: Tax

FC did you try it with a code of 603L ? That should give you an idea of what a normal taxpayer would pay. As West Ender says get on to the tax office straight away, the longer you leave it the longer the government get interest on your fortune :D

Re: Tax

yep, as others have said, you should not be on BR if this is your only job, you will get it all back except what you should pay on a standard tax code.

I look at my tax bill sometimes and wonder why I go to work, just be grateful you are only paying 25%, when you get to ~38K it goes up to 40% on anything over that!
