Couscous, Anybody Tried It?
Was just wondering if anybody has tried Couscous? Have seen it being used quite a lot on the telly lately and was thinking of giving it a go. If you have tried it what did you have to accompany it and how did you cook it?

Re: Couscous, Anybody Tried It?
The look of it puts me off :o

Re: Couscous, Anybody Tried It?
I like it and it's easy to cook. You just cover it with boiling water and a little salt, simmer it for 10 minutes (or as long as the instructions on the packet say - there are different "strengths" of couscous) then leave it for about 5 minutes. Stir it up with a fork and it's done. I sometimes use it where I might use boiled rice.

Re: Couscous, Anybody Tried It?
Richard loves the stuff, we had marrow stuffed with cous cous, tomato's and bacon the other week, it was delicious

Re: Couscous, Anybody Tried It?
Ewwwww! I had this whilst in Tunisia years ago, also tried it here. I have to say I don't like it at all. Phil on the other hand loves the stuff, and so does our 15 yr old daughter.
They like the Ainsley Harriot ones that you just add water to. Gail xxxx |
Re: Couscous, Anybody Tried It?
You can use it just like you'd use rice, so have it as an accompaniament with something like a chilli or curry, or cold with chopped tomato and cucumber in is a nice way.

Re: Couscous, Anybody Tried It?
Thanks everyone will give it a try:) In fact will have it in place of rice as not to keen on rice:)

Re: Couscous, Anybody Tried It?
The look of this type of food puts me off too....and I eat with my eyes and my nose first....... that is to say, I look at it and test out the aroma....if either are suspect then I give it the flick, I am sure that this is a survival thing.
If food looks horrible then I wouldn't put it into my mouth. I am notorious for not even trying foreign/different food. I like my food plain and recognisable. I would not be a good guest on 'Come Dine with Me'. |
Re: Couscous, Anybody Tried It?
Marg you sound like my mum, her face is a picture when she sees anything like this or foreign muck as she calls it:)

Re: Couscous, Anybody Tried It?
Teh way I cook it is by melting some butter in a pan, add a few herbs of choice(dry or fresh depending whats to hand, usually oregano, sage, some thyme and maybe basil), when teh herbs have transferred their flavour to the oil add the cous cous, fry for a few mins, then add a tin of chopped toms, bring to boil, add a little water to about twice volume of teh cous cous in liqued, turn off, put lid on pan and then just stir every 3 or 4 mins till teh cous cous has absorbed the liqued. serve hot with grilled meat, fish, etc
any extra can be left to go cold, add chopped fresh toms, sweetcorn, celery, tuna flakes, salt, black pepper and anything else you like for a tasty lunch teh next day. |
Re: Couscous, Anybody Tried It?
Bernie....that is ME.......when I go away with my daughter(who will eat anything)....I tell her, 'don't give me none of that foreign muck'....and she will try to coax me to try it......but I'd rather be shot than poisoned. I heave at the smell of curry......I have never tasted it because the smell makes me feel nauseous.
Pasta, Pizza, lasagne.......don't eat it......I will cook it for others to eat, but not for me thanks....I'd rather have a jam butty :) |
Re: Couscous, Anybody Tried It?
Oh Mrs P, you and I are definitely not soulmates where food is concerned. :o
If it will fit in my mouth - I will eat it. I ate things in Saudi Arabia that I couldn't begin to describe, though I drew the line at eating dog in a Fillipino restaurant (the waiter was gracious enough to skip over, it on the menu, saying, "English no like that"). That was an ethical, rather than a gastronomical, choice. I eat food from every nation, I love Italian and Greek food and can cook quite a few dishes, and I'll try anything once. I have cooked camels' testicles and sheeps' brains and once ate a jellied scorpion (God, that was awful). Couscous? It's a piece of peepee. :D |
Re: Couscous, Anybody Tried It?
I love couscous. It's so versatile, can be flavoured and really absorbs the flavour. Can be eaten hot with a hot meal or cold with a salad. Makes a great snack too with chopped up salady things mixed in.

Re: Couscous, Anybody Tried It?
Oh, West Ender you are making me heave....do please stop it......my beef and barley is looking for an emergency exit.
I must admit, I am a nightmare to take out for a meal.....which is probably why I don't eat out very often. I have travelled extensively....but I have never been tempted to try local 'delicacies'......I even got the chef to make me an omelette when we dined out at a posh restaurant in Hong Kong.....though hubby had beef with ginger and spring onions(eaten with chopsticks). |
Re: Couscous, Anybody Tried It?
Margaret, try it next time - please! You are missing some taste sensations that you could only guess at. :D

Re: Couscous, Anybody Tried It?
Really enjoy the stuff ... easy to cook, goes well with most flavours, cheap, and good for the health. Rather bland on its own, but get creative and it is great.

Re: Couscous, Anybody Tried It?
For lunch today I've had an oatcake microwaved with a little cheddar cheese, rocket and watercress salad, some feta houmous and some Morrocan couscous, which has fruit, nuts and black olives in it.
De-e-e-e-licious. :) |
Re: Couscous, Anybody Tried It?
I love cous cous. Always have some in the cupboard, it goes with practically anything.
|
Re: Couscous, Anybody Tried It?
I have never tried couscous
It sounds similar to Italian polenta, which I ate once at an Italian outdoor trade union social event. I didn't like it much - bland - but there wasn't anything accompanying it, which, it appears, isn't the correct way to eat it Polenta - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |
Re: Couscous, Anybody Tried It?
I got some ready made from Asda, was not overkeen but think I will try Entwisi's recipe.

Re: Couscous, Anybody Tried It?
I tried Co-op Tomato and Mediterranean Herb Cous Cous (packet) and it's lovely. It's quick to cook, you cook in melted butter for a minute then pour on boiling water and simmer for about 5 minutes. A whole packet is enough for 2 people so I eat half of it and save the other half to have cold. :)
