21 December

Why is December 21 the longest day of the year

MITZY 21-12-2008 19:17

Re: 21 December

I thought June 21st was classed as the longest day, (even though they all have 24hours).December 21st or there abouts is the shortest day.

Re: 21 December

It's the shortest day, in terms of daylight hours, being the day when the sun is at its furthest point away from the Northern hemisphere of the Earth. After today we start tilting, ever so slowly, back the other way so daylight gets a tiny bit longer every day and I, for one, can't wait to get back to long, light evenings. :D

Re: 21 December

It is the shortest day, the days will now get longer (more daylight hours) by 14 minutes per week until june 21st.

I have been miserable all day(week/month/season) - knowing the worst of the dark nights are over has made my day :D

Re: 21 December

'Tis the year's midnight, and it is the day's,
Lucy's, who scarce seven hours herself unmasks;
The sun is spent, and now his flasks
Send forth light squibs, no constant rays;
The whole world's sap is sunk;
The general balm th'hydroptic earth hath drunk,
Whither, as to the bed's feet, life is shrunk,
Dead and interred. ......

Sounds like fun ..... :hehetable

I saw a woman, this morning, carrying a bunch of holly and a bunch of daffodils. It looked odd.

An ironic juxtaposition indeed ... but I did read in the local rag that misletoe is on the way out:mad:
