has anyone taken a window out and replaced it with a patio door?

as the title asks..

Has anyone ever taken a window out and replaced it with patio/french doors ?
if so was it easy and how much did it cost you?
or did the window company who were fitting the window do the demolition of the wall for you etc..

my back room has that big window that I presume all 2 bed terraced houses in accy and surrounding areas have and I am giving serious thought to taking it out and replacing it with french doors or patio doors straight onto back..now there is only bout 14inch of wall height to the window sill itself so its not like there would be alot of demolition involved as such..

if theres an accyweb glazer on who wants a possible small job pm me..

all help/info etc welcomed..

Re: has anyone taken a window out and replaced it with a patio door?

I had this done about 25 years ago by St Helen's Glass (now, sadly, defunct). They did it in a day, slicing through the brickwork like a knife through butter and plastering over the bricks that were left, and had the patio doors in place by tea-time. I can't remember what it cost but it wouldn't be relevant now.

I've since replaced the sliding doors with double-opening French doors, 3 years ago, much nicer, easier and more attractive. The replacement cost £1300 but it's a very large window, over 8' wide.

these are large windows too...infact over 7ft high..but only 4ft wide..I would have/want the french doors to the normal height opening out and the remainder of the space above filled with glass - as in a window but obviously not one that opens..

I now have a long thin window down each side and 2 doors that open, in the centre, about 5'wide. I used Fairview Windows, from Warrington, and found them excellent.

Yes and it cost nothing I did it myself and got the council to put the cost of the frame and door on the expense account.:D:D

I'm not 100% but am pretty sure that this needs notifying to the local authority Building Control dept too :(
