Re: What sort of bird is this??

thanx Roy

if you zoom in on my pic (if you can) you will see that it has flappy things on the ends of its wings, kinda like paddles, right at the back, it looks like its stood on them... cant see those on the heron

katex 20-04-2009 17:52

Re: What sort of bird is this??

I'll go for a cormorant Flashy ... get one on my lodge now and then, they will go into the water and dive down for food, whereby a heron will only hang/wade about on the banking to catch its fish.

Also, you wouldn't have not got anywhere near a heron before it flew off ... very nervous birds. Definitely not a heron... they spot my movement behind my patio door and off they go.

Deffo a cormorant. Saw it myself in the water - they look very low down. The curved end of the beak is a giveaway too.

I love watching the cormorant .. once it dives, love to try and guess where it will emerge again .. bit like 'Spot the Ball' with wild life... :D

The cormorant, or common shag,
Lays eggs inside a paper bag.
But what these unobservant birds
Have failed to notice is that herds
Of wandering bears will come with buns,
And steal the bags to keep the crumbs.

Or so thinks Ogden Nash.:D

Before it gets moved to a place I'm not allowed .... next time you go where you may see this verminous shag (or cormorant), leave your camera at home and take your shotgun .... kill it .... these birds are pests. We have thousands around here ... it's open season ... shoot on sight:uzi:

Oops ... missed a couple of lines out of the poem ... should know better than to use my brain when I'm stoned:

Here we go again; ahem:

The cormorant, or common shag
Lays eggs inside a paper bag.
The reason you will see, no doubt,
It is to keep the light'ning out .... etc

Now, that makes more nonesense ...

Unlike you Canadian 'cousins' .. here in the U.K. we leave the culling of vermin to professionals who will do it in a humane manner, not some idiots out at the weekend taking wild, amateur pop shots with loaded dangerous weapons at these beautiful birds ....

There's a new TV ad for Specsavers running at the moment Roy, it shows an old couple out for the day and they sit down for a butty, then all of a sudden these bars come down and clamp them to the seat, there on the blood roller coaster:D as they walk away after the bloke say what kind of these was that:D The fun thing about it is that my other half was asked if she would do the ad and her answer was, when she found out it was on a roller coast, not bloody likely:D

Eric I wasn't criticising your lot at all mate, I was merely pointing out that over here people look a what goes on in other country's and pass judgement. As you are probably aware we have more than our fair share of tree huggers over here, that just don't understand the concept of real life necessities. I'm a great lover of nature, but would never think of pressing my thoughts on people who are directly effected by the over running of nature which interferes with their everyday lives

Guess I over reacted ... sorry about that ... nothing personal intended .... but it does bug us over here when Paul McBeatle shows picutres of baby harp seals, and talks of boycotting Canadian products ... baby seals (and baby bears) are cute and cudly; but the adult harp seals, if unculled, could destroy a fishery already sorely hurt by overfishing. And the fishery is the livelihood of thousands of Nefoundlanders. An unculled seal population could eat so much fish, that subsequent generations of seals would suffer starvation, and die in much larger numbers than those our govt sets for the cull.

Exactly my point Eric, that's why I never had an opinion about banning hunting the with dogs issue over here, you don't see too many Toffs (as Mancie calls um) riding though Hyndburn on horseback, chasing foxy woxy, but I have seen the carnage they leave in a hen house, and believe me its not nice, and insistently that carnage was in Ossy too, about the only time I've spewed my guts up when not ****ed, a bloody horrible site, and I mean bloody

Eric..........I dont think the subject of livelyhood and fishing will go down well with the majority...........Fleetwood a fishing port, not too far from here are down to 8 inshore boats and 2 offshore trawlers...quotas from the EU restrict one boat to 500 Kilos of one species for one month.....this can be caught in one day....anything above that has to be dumped and cannot be landed.
You say thousands of Newfoundlanders are worried about their jobs... 50% of the boats in Fleetwood will be de-commisioned within twelve months....then there was five.
Dont believe all you read in the rags you support.

Newfoundland was built on the Grand Banks fishing ... and the outports still live off it ... I remember Fleetwood, even Knot End. The fishing grounds have been screwed over by over fishing ... I remember reading that Cabot told Henry Vll that the cod on the Grand Banks were so numerous that one could walk on them. No more. However, we are now policing our territorial waters more rigourosly. We even built a new class of warship, the "Kingston Class", which is specifically designed as a coastal defence ship, and is often used to warn off foreign fishing vessels that come into our territorial waters.

not only the Grand Banks being stripped bare , here in California the commercial Salmon season has been cancelled again for the second year , no fish returning to the spawning grounds .

apologies to original poster for thread wander but fish and cormorants do have a lot in common ;)

I don't think that is a wander. This is a wander: "How 'bout them Jays, eh"! And even then, there is a link to cormorants ... if you spend a lot of your youth shagging flies, and you get good at it, you may end up in the majors making the big bucks;):D
