Halal chops

Just taken out a couple of lamb chops out for me tea, and noticed picked up 'Halal Lamb' from Asda. This is a serious question, will they taste any different ?

I wouldn't have thought so. Halal meat is basically meat which is lawful for a Muslim to eat, i.e. the animal has been treated and slaughtered in a manner that has been deemed appropriate by God.

What manner is that then ? Still a dead sheep innit ? They look a little pinkier and drier than normal ... is there not as much blood there ? Does God eat chops ? (only joking).

If I remember rightly, the sheep is not stunned before slaughter, it has a prayer said into its ear and then the throat is cut with a very sharp knife......and then the blood is drained out......and that is it(unless of course anyone else knows any different).
I can't imagine it will taste very much different, it being halal means that it is acceptable to a bigger buying public.......though I am not sure that many muslims buy their meat in Asda.

Looks like they are extending their products then to a wider audience. Never noticed myself before, so that is why I just grabbed them.

Will offer my verdict in a couple of hours. Hope I will not be struck down for imbibing a glass of wine with it ... :D

Thats about the size of it.
The animal bleeds to death. It is very inhumane and should be banned.

I agree. I struggle with my conscience eating meat at all but at least we are supposed to have humane standards. They should not be allowed to be flouted in the name of religion.

Re: Halal chops

Ok, have eaten 'em ... unbiased opinion below:-

Bite appeal :1 was tough; the other wasn't ... am good at grilling and never had a tough chop for yonks.

Taste: What taste ? Might as well eat sawdust... good job I like mint sauce.

Texture: Strange .. bitty and fractured if this makes sense.

After effects: The lining of my mouth is still very fatty, even though not much fat on the chops .... would make a good handcream, but I do like to eat them with my fingers and the fat was very good actually.

Marks out of 10 ... 3 I'm afraid, but will still eat the other four as not cheap, worked out at .80p each.

Am willing to admit, may have thought about them too much whilst I was chomping, so will have to feed them to my son when he is next over and tell him after what they were and ask his opinion. Mind you, the speed he feeds his stomach, don't think his palate gets chance to taste, is always grateful for any food put in front of him.

How do I achieve that David ? Look them in the eyes and whisper a prayer before peeling their skins, would say sorry. Well, potatoes are living organisms too ...if Charles thinks they hear him, why not me ?

Have fought with my conscience over eating meat for a good while, I was vegetarian for 17 years and could go back to that with no problems now. I don't think religion should be brought into it, I think it's more a case of if it came down to you actually killing the animal , could you do it? Could you throttle a chicken or shoot a lamb? I think that if you couldn't physically end that animals life then you have no right to be eating it. I am in a bit of a state of turmoil over this and have been for a few months, I do like meat but I am struggling justifying it.

katex 25-05-2009 22:19

Re: Halal chops

An entirely different subject Lindsay, however, no, I could not kill these sort of animals but only because we have become organised, and have professionals to do it for us.

If times changed, and I had to go out and hunt/kill animals to feed my children, wouldn't hesitate for a minute. Lucky we have a choice now though.

Re: Halal chops

i would have no qualms of killing teh animals so I'm happy to continue to eat meat. One thing we did with Siobhan was not 'hide' the name of the animal from here when eating meat. hence its piggy butties, moo cow pie etc.

I've bought Halal meat before and found it no different to ordinarily slaughtered meat.

Well to me a chop is a chop, but I have to say I was actually put of bacon for a short while after working at Walls meat processing plant in Hyde. That plant, back in the 70s, did most of Tommy Walls pork products and we were actually given a tour of he plant, gruesome to say the least
