Oh i no that place but Accringtons so small and they use our name across the world for eg hollands pies and the bricks its amazing what a small can do in a couple of years!

Re: Why 'o' Why

Nori isn't what it was. What happened to the big chimney?

WillowTheWhisp 15-07-2004 13:55

Re: Why 'o' Why

Why aren't brick houses in Accy made from Nori bricks?

WillowTheWhisp 15-07-2004 14:34

Re: Why 'o' Why

Just saw some newish houses today and they seemed to be made from alien (southern) bricks. It's good to know there are plenty built with good old indestructable Nori ones.

Doug 15-07-2004 14:56

Re: Why 'o' Why

Nori's are industrial bricks. Made to last.......Many houses built by Fielding in and around Blackpool where made using Nori's back in the 20s & 30s. You will have heard the expression Built like a brick S*** house........These brick eat drill bits and tend to hurt when doped on ones foot.

matthewm56 15-07-2004 15:04

Re: Why 'o' Why

Ye i bet it hurts!

Doug 15-07-2004 15:10

Re: Why 'o' Why

I've had it..... more than once….

On my foot twice. And then one at the back of the head. It certainly does hurt my friend.

matthewm56 15-07-2004 15:21

Re: Why 'o' Why

hollands pies are made in haslingdon.

WillowTheWhisp 16-07-2004 09:12

Re: Why 'o' Why

I bet more people have heard of Accrington than Haslingden but Haslingden isn't part of Hyndburn is it?

I always thought Holland's pies were made in Baxenden! I think I need to study where the boundaries are.

JohnW 16-07-2004 10:44

Re: Why 'o' Why

According to Holland's Pies van livery, they are made in Baxenden.

matthewm56 16-07-2004 11:48

Re: Why 'o' Why

Yes i live in Baxenden and the pies are made in Baxenden near Rising Bridge mc donalds. But the reason i said hollands pies were made in Accy is because more people no Accrington!

WillowTheWhisp 16-07-2004 12:43

Re: Why 'o' Why

So we can rightly claim them as a Hyndburn asset then and not Rossendale?

JohnW 16-07-2004 12:45

Re: Why 'o' Why

Abso-bloody-lutely. I used to live in Bash as a kid and they're made in Bash!

Re: Why 'o' Why

Hi Matthew,

I haven't lived in Baxenden for 51 years now. I was born at 438 Manchester Road in 1943, lived at 469 Manchester Road until I was eight, then at 452 Manchester Road until I was ten when we moved to live in Southport. I went to St. John's school from 1946 until 1953 and was in the choir at the church from 1951 to 1953.

I was in Baxenden about three weeks ago on the 1st. July. My wife and I had lunch at the church snack bar (I had two Hollands meat pies and peas, really good) with a very old friend and her husband, Valerie and Jim Eland. Also got to spend some time with my oldest friend there who I hadn't seen for eight years, David Ratcliffe (known around the village as Ratty) I'm sure you'll have seen David knocking around, he's lived there all of his life.

It was really nice to visit the village as I hadn't been back to England for six years.

Cheers,

JohnW

Have a check at the "Welcome to Haslingden" road sign when your driving up Manchester Road, are you sure Hollands Pies are made in Baxenden?

Baxenden is in Hyndburn and Haslingden is in Rossendale, just to compilcate matters.

You could always read what it says on the back of the Van. "Baxenden"

All I'm saying is please check the road sign Doug and ignore what it says on the vans, and for the record I work there too.

Re: Why 'o' Why

I know the roadsign you mean Bagpuss. In my job, we have geographical boudaries which we are, by law, unable to cross. Some of my clients live in Rising Bridge, which is according to that sign, in Rossendale, but because they pay their council tax to hyndburn, Rising Bridge is considered to be Hyndburn for Health Authority purposes.

Hehehe, I reckon it's time that sign was moved up to the roundabout.. :D

Bagpuss 22-07-2004 19:02

Re: Why 'o' Why

Just had a look on streetmap.co.uk and the boundary for Haslingden/Accrington is below Hollands Pies so surely that means the pies are made in Haslingden, Rossendale and not Baxenden, Hyndburn he he !!!

JohnW 22-07-2004 19:15

Re: Why 'o' Why

Maybe Hollands would rather just be associated with Baxenden than Haslingden eh?

I would rather be associated with Baxenden than Haslingden but I better be careful as my mother in law comes from the Haslingden (Helmshore) side of the boundary.
I only work there but I'm sure it has something to do with the numourous boundary changes we seem have had in the last few years.

I don't need to ask anyone because I know I'm right, the road sign and boundary map are good enough for me, also I wouldn't trust a word "the big boss" says anyway.

Re: Why 'o' Why

do you think that there will be a little war over this
Baxenden vs haslingden
and how come southeners dont like meat pies

WillowTheWhisp 20-11-2004 17:54

Re: Why 'o' Why

Who says southerners don't like meat pies? Busman is a southerner and he likes meat pies.

sarnie boy 20-11-2004 17:57

Re: Why 'o' Why

yeh but if you go down south into the chip shops theres not many pies on the list

WillowTheWhisp 20-11-2004 18:00

Re: Why 'o' Why

No, apparently, so I've been told, straight from the horse's mouth, they consider a steak and kidney pie to be a meat pie. But then again we don't do saveloys.

sarnie boy 20-11-2004 18:04

Re: Why 'o' Why

well sorry 2 any southeners who i may have offended
i just went into a chippy and no pies

WillowTheWhisp 20-11-2004 18:09

Re: Why 'o' Why

Maybe if they were introduced to meat pies they would find out that they like them. I was introduced to saveloys and I found out that I didn't like them. lol

sarnie boy 20-11-2004 18:10

Re: Why 'o' Why

yeh like me and mushrooms

Hey guys. You are making my mouth water. Bricks- don't forget Redac brick works in Huncoat. i.e. they have probably closed down now. but their bricks were just as famous world wide as Nori is/was.

Re: Why 'o' Why

Bricks and pies - reminds me of a cornish pasty I once had - from cornwall too.
