If you mean the Accrington one there are plans to make part of it into offices and have like a conference centre and gym there. Nothing happening at the moment other than it is being left to rot:(

Was a regular there in 66/67. Could get a bit lively at times. Always best to stay out of the way of certain individuals! ;)

It was in '67 that I took a wrong turn in Manchester and ended up in Saskatchewan:eek: So I missed most of the fun. But I do remember that I saw news of JFK's assassination on the tv there while I was playing snooker ... it almost put me off my game.

Your not wrong there Eric, for thirty bob and they'd take you to hospital with alcohol poisoning. I can remember back in the early 70s going into our local (White Bull New Lane) and the landlord say the beer had gone up a penny, I just said it wouldn't be long before we wouldn't be able to get 10 pints for a pound:eek::eek::eek:

10 pints is a good start to the night :theband: Strange that there was a time in my life that an increase of a penny a pint was considered outrageous gouging:eek:

I seem to remember drinking Scrumpy in the NAAFI at RAF Locking in 1961 at 11d a pint because it was 2d a pint cheaper than the bitter - Ushers, if my memory still serves

Well it was in those days Eric, now they think nothing of putting 5 or 6 pence on a pint which would have been over 20 old pence:( and the beers not half as good either:(

My step mum used to be the stewardess there, years back! When I was a teenager.
Started my first job there at the age of 13, bottling up and cleaning and stuff. (Not on the books of course, just earning a bit of pocket money).
Then at 16, started glass collecting, then progressed to behind the bar!

It's no wonder I work at Clayton Con, (My dad was steward there for 16/18 years until retirement almost 4 years ago)

I now have my own Personal License and do relief for Hazel (Clayton Con) if and when!

Accy Con was so much fun, and that ballroom... WOW!!! memories! xx

Here is a lovely reminder for those who went to the Con. The stage is different than I remember it, so maybe this photo is ....late 50's, very early 60's????

Alan Gilmartin 21-12-2009 04:32

Re: Con club

The stage was higher as I remember, seemed like shoulder hight, dont remember those entry doors on each side, they look fairly modern. there were seats around the sides but no tables.

I agree with all of that - my memories are from late 50s.
.....and the ceiling wasn't painted in garish colours either

'56 onwards the stage was definitely as you describe it Alan - cannot comment on the ceiling, even though I stared at it a couple of times, it must have been too dark to see the decor

cashman 21-12-2009 09:03

Re: Con club

yep from my day 63 stage was higher, also can't see the spinning ball in centre of ceiling on that pic, obviously did the room up fer my arrival.:D:D

Wynonie Harris 21-12-2009 09:19

Re: Con club

Yep, stage was higher and there were seats fixed around the walls. There were no tables and chairs there, as it would've got in the way of the "strollers" who walked round and round the outer perimeter of the dancefloor in an anti-clockwise direction (a strange custom, although I did the same at the time).

I reckon that photo must be from a more modern era.

That picture is taken after refurbishment in the 80s before it was sold, I actually watched them do it, I could even climb stairs in those days:D

Re: Con club

Endorse everyone's memory as above ... was just two exits at either side of the stage to get to the bar, which ran along the back.

Never been in when it looked like this ... think last time I was there was probably around 73, and original higher stage was still there then.

Christmas and New Year's Eve were great nights ... you had to make sure you got tickets in advance or no go.

The ticket were very expensive too kate, half-a-crown when I first bought mine, and how we complained when they put them up to three=and-six:D

Forgot to say the stage is at the other end of the room and the doors on each side of the stage are the emergency exits

We used to call this "The Accy Walk" - a fab excuse to walk round the dancers, eyeing up the talent. Tee hee. Arrgh, all us lasses would be dancing around our bags, then we too would do "the walk"! Hey, it wasnt just the guys who did the Accy Walk, eyeing up the woman!!!!!

LOL Atarah, but if you were clever you walked in a clockwise direction ... good excuse for bumping into the talent.

Could always try the old trick of 'accidentally on purpose' spilling a drink on some victim's shirt... only a little though ... had to minimise the damage.

Not an option if you were a bloke, though. All very well bumping into the ladies accidentally on purpose, but if you genuinely accidently bumped into certain chaps, you'd end up with a knuckle buttie!

Sometimes it was accidental and you could not discern one direction from the other (Thwaites) - think I got a Glasgow Kiss, and it was my wife to be who helped me up from the floor.

A beautiful building. I will be doing a survey in the new year asking people in the local area what they think about the new plans for Accy Con Club and then passing it on to the owner whom i have contact with. If anyone wants a message passing on about what you think should be done then please post it here!

If you are doing a survey in the new year regarding the plans for the building. What are the plans then?. There must be some sort of a plan Or are they just waiting for Idea,s. It doesnt make sense to me.

There are plans, Im sorry I thought you may already know about the plans.
Here are the plans that were proposed in 2010 but yet still nothing has happened yet. The current conservative club owner of Woodgreen Developments told me the same plans as is posted in the following newspaper article.
Apparently the reason why it has not started yet is because planning permission has still not come through. But I want to dig deeper as it has been empty for around 10 years now. Take a look at this article from 2010.
Accrington Conservative Club ballroom faces demolition (From This Is Lancashire)

(They are planning on knocking down the rear of the building and building a large glass atrium with a gym and office spaces and a restaurant.
but I want peoples thoughts on this so I can pass it on to the owner)
Cheers

Can't see where any Planning Application has been submitted.

Got the impression money was tight for them to go ahead with this scheme.

Would be good to have an update, however. :)
