There is a thread already going on re. this Just Nosey ... your post will probably get added to this.

http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f...-on-50543.html

Can tell you though that there was :

280 .. unit seating
64 ... cinema seats
68 ... tip-up seats
260 .. circle seating.

672 in all.

Until the owner applies for permission for 'change of use' - nobody but him will know

When i was living on the caravan park to the rear, owned by Jim West we were all given copies of a letter from the council saying there would be construction works in the near future to make the building safe and secure.

Said nothing about it re-opening though.

I heard that it is in a conservation area and development will be very tricky to obtain, I expect whoever buys it will end up with a white elephant

Re: ossy Palladium cinema

I think it is well outside the conservation areas.

Bit confused this is Everlux Elec Ltd. Know there is a new notice on the building, but again never stopped to read it :

Aricle in telegraph says it will be demolished

Oswaldtwistle Palladium set for demolition (From Lancashire Telegraph)

katex 02-04-2010 16:23

Re: ossy Palladium cinema

Thanks Lancsdave .. wondered how long would take them to pick up on that. Have just been searching for a Demolition Enforcement order ... looks like that is what has happened here.

Wonder what the owners will now do with the site ... sounded like they could have had plans for resurrecting the Bingo Hall (who knows). Perhaps now they may just decide to sell off the land or summat. Will all have to wait again and speculate .. as we do... :D

It's a shame in some ways, that part of our past will be no more, but it doesn't rate highly on any architectural list of beauties, and since it's stood empty for years, has been an eyesore.

Think its just another step on the ever changing face of Ossy Garinda, how Union Road has changed since I was a school kid (I know it was a long time since) The area from the Town Hall (Civic Theatre) down towards St Paul's school as all changed, Foxhill Grove Church gone, the area around the Library well across the road has all changed the old Co-op building gone and now replaced with a church, nearly all the mills have gone or are being used for other purposes, the Fire Station gone replaced by a Super Market oh hum:rolleyes:

Even in my lifetime there's been many changes.

Some for the better, some not.

Personally I won't be too sad, seeing the Palladium demolished.

Not so sure myself Garinda, properly maintained it would have been better standing than a pile of rubble

If it was in use, but the chances are that if empty, and without someone occupying it, it wouldn't have been adequately maintained. As has been the case.

Obviously, because it was empty for so long, it didn't hold much appeal, to those seeking suitable premises.

That was really my point Garinda, its just a shame that nobody could see the building as a going concern and it became such a mess, the thing is what will replace it

Re: ossy Palladium cinema

I'm wondering if the company that is the present owner ... Everlux Ele. just bought it for the assets inside the Palladium as they do install bingo equipment, etc., to other buildings. The intention was then to sell the building after they had stripped it ... it did go up for sale again immediately after.

Mind you, no building to sell now, however, they must have known that a demolition enforcement would be put on it so, maybe, selling just the land is a better option.

Oh dear, speculating again aren't I .. makes sense though.

Not sure whether Ossy Mills would wish to make any further investment at this time.

Actually Margaret .. that is just what they have done today on the land next to the Palladium. Looks very nice too ... somewhere for you to sit in Summer.

Re: ossy Palladium cinema

I suppose it was inevitable in the end really, but is a shame that no one could have found a practical use for it before it got in this state. However it was a large building, and in a small place like Ossy there are limits to what its use could have been. I only ever went in it once, was in the 60,s whilst it was still a cinema. I went with my Dad to see a film called "Summer Magic" starring a young Hayley Mills and Burl Ives, which by coincidence was on BBC 2 last Sunday!

Best Regards - Taggy
