Do you use Butter
On BBC Breakfast this morning a leading Heart surgeon said that Butter should be banned because it contain about 60% saturated fats. Is he right to ask for the ban and do you use it. Myself I cant remember the last time I had butter, it must be 20 years so it wouldn't bother me if it was banned or not;)

Re: Do you use Butter
better to use a smattering of butter than some man made artificial tasteless crap IMHO.
humans have been digesting natural fats for thousands of years, trans fats etc were designed and heart disiese goes up, so much so that most manufacturers now are trying to remove them from their products. I'll stick to good old cow juice fat thanks! |
Re: Do you use Butter
i am fed up with being told ,this is bad and that is bad, what should be banned is all these know it alls..
.I LOVE MY LURPAK,,,, |
Re: Do you use Butter
I use Anchor spreadable, so I presume that it's a slightly better option - could be crap for all I care, I just use it because I like the taste. :D

Re: Do you use Butter
Those nasty trans fats are the ones described as 'hydrogenated' or 'partly hydrogenated' on the label.
Doing that increases their shelf life (and manufacturers profits), but they are harder to digest. I agree entirely with Entwisi - natural fats are best. I only use butter and olive oil in preparing food. http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/20...health-faculty "Trans fats are much less well-known than saturated fats but are much more damaging. They are very bad for the heart, play a key role in the UK's very high levels of heart disease and contribute to a large number of the excess coronary deaths we have in this country," |
Re: Do you use Butter
I keep some buter, for glazing vegetables etc.
Cabbage with margarine is disgusting, with a little butter and black pepper, divine. Like most things, in moderation, if you enjoy them, they are good for you. Also, it's not all bad. 'It is worth knowing also that while it is a saturated fat, not everything about it is bad. Butter contains natural antibacterial and antiviral properties, important for fighting those autumn colds and coughs.' Cooking with butter: spread the news - Telegraph |
Re: Do you use Butter
I still use butter but not as often as i used to. I never found the taste of any of the other spreads or margarines to be very good, however ive now started using the "I cant believe its not butter Light version" which actually does have a buttery taste, so mainly that now, but not all supermarkets stock it, and i have butter for a treat now and then!

Re: Do you use Butter
If I could afford it I would use butter all the time, after all it has it's advantages when used in the correct proportions of a healthy diet.
Unfortunately most of my diet isn't healthy because bulk buying cheap sausages, mince and micro-wave meals stave off the hunger a lot better than buying little of the more expensive cut's that are claimed to be better for us. |

I Can't Believe It's Not Butter! - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia!
ingredient list shows- Vegetable Oil Blend (liquid soybean oil, liquid canola oil, hydrogenated soybean oil, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, liquid canola oil) ...those (hydrogenated, partially hydrogenated) are nasty trans fats:eek: |
Re: Do you use Butter
We made butter at nursery school, with full fat milk, straight from the cow's udder.
I can't believe it took so much churning. |
Re: Do you use Butter
It Always makes me laugh when people "Cherry Pick" information from the internet to justify their opinions! Thus relying on "Experts" who have provided this in the first place....then decrying other "Experts" who have opposing views!!...So the Expert who gives opnions on trans fats etc are more knowledgeable than those who give opinions on Butter are they??? Lol!!!....and Wikipedia of course only reports facts, and is the font of all knowledge....Not!!!
End of day opinions are opinions, i cant see why anything cant be eaten, in moderation, i just eat what i like the taste of, no matter what others say! Best Regards - Taggy |

The fact that trans fats are now illegal in some countries should be enough of a warning light for you to do your own googling. Here is another link in case you do not wish to use your time googling Trans Fats - What You Need to Know About Trans Fats or Hydrogenated Fats |

I like treats now and then, and dont baulk at scoffing a large Choc Nut Sundae if i'm out, and am quite happy to pig out on Pizzas, Burgers, Fish n Chips, Sausages, Curries etc etc...i try to eat the best quality that i can find because i'm solely governed by the taste...if its good and i like it...i'll eat it! Butter or Marg is not integral to my eating habits and is not very important to me, in the vast cheme of things, however to my taste, in ICBINB Light, ive found a product that i like the taste of, and its less than half the calories of butter, so i find it a very good alternative for me! I'm making the same judgement calls on the "Health Police" as i am on the "Global Warming Gestapo"....quite frankly i think most of it is total crap, i will be the judge of what i put in my body, based on how i live my life and how it makes me feel. Far to many "Experts" and pen pushers on commitees have there own hidden agenda's for making various statements, none of which are truely aimed benefitting us as individuals, or indeed society in general! Re: Do you use Butter
This heart surgeon is saying that he is getting more 30+ year olds who need by-pass surgery........I bet most of these people whom he treats, did not eat butter, but the margarine and butter substitutes that scientists and 'experts' told us would be better for our health.........I also wonder who sponsored his research....would it by any chance be the makers of a margarine/butter substitute?
I am not in favour of banning any type of food. I beleive that the majority of us can make our own decisions on what is, and is not good for us. |

My guess (and it may be wrong, but I am sure you will tell me if I am) is that you opt for these cheap sausages, mince, and microwave meals because you do not like to spend time in the preparation of meals(or perhaps you are lacking in cooking skills)....so you go for the quick option. It is possible to cook nutritious and healthier food by planning, shopping wisely, and of course, spending a bit of time in the kitchen. |

Re: Do you use Butter
When moving house, if you rub butter on the feet of small children, it helps them settle in more quickly, and they are unlikely to return to their old abode.
This doesn't work with margarine. |

My granny told me that if food doesn't come from an animal or a field it's "not good for you". She may be right, she may be wrong but she didn't pop her clogs till she was 95 and she was a farmers daughter.
I love butter (not its price) and the good news is that you can spread it really thinly and still get a mouthful of flavour. It's what crumpets were made for and a little of what you fancy does you good. :) |

Re: Do you use Butter
I was always under the impression that saturated fats were absolutely fine, as they were natural ones. They just have to be combined with a healthy routine. Shame I can't manage to do the latter. Taggy how do you get the motivation to go to the gym? Ughh.. :)
I eat Lurpack by the way. I love a bit of salt! |

Indian cooking is done with a lot of Ghee, which is of course, clarified butter. The authorities in India tried to get people over there to accept what they considered to be a healthier option.......western type margarine.....levels of heart disease went up. Also Clarissa Dixon Wright(she of Two fat Ladies fame) is related to someone who owned Van Deb Berghs(the makers of Stork Margarine....amongst others) he made her promise that she would never eat margarine....be cause he knew what went into it!!! I think much of our food is chemicalised, and we do not know how these chemicals affect individuals. Any number of things could be responsible for the increase in heart disease. A sedentary life style has to be high on the risk list. Having said that, it is up to the individual to assess their own risk......I do not believe that governments should be involved in determining what the population eats. That is fascism. |

I think they want to make sure that the findings of Clarissa can be replicated in the Northern male. |

i cant help laugh my arse off at the audacity this clown has to blame butter for teh rise in heart problems in 30 year olds, it couldnt possibly be the kebabs, pizas, mcdonalds, kfc and all teh cheap crap sold at such places like iceland that parents have shoved down the throats of their kids for the past 20 years and the introduction of alco-pos could it ?
all above incidently dont come with butter with the possible exception of kfc corn on the cob |

Re: Do you use Butter
Whoever persuaded the entire country that they Can't Believe It's Not Butter is a genius because it's nothing like it. How about lovely salted butter on hot toast, fresh crusty bread or even digestives with cheddar cheese.
My great aunt smoked 40 Woodbines a day for 67 years, ate dripping butties regularly and baked more cakes than Mr Kipling but it was probably the buttered bread that finally killed her.... This country has gone absolutely bonkers but obesity is the one thing we can't blame the government for. A bit of moderation for people who live in fast food outlets wouldn't go amiss. |
