How many of you still buy the telegraph

How many of you still buy the telegraph? I was just wondering as I have enquired about some advetising and found it pretty steep. Do you look for local services in the paper or do you look on google???

lancsdave 28-01-2010 18:36

Re: How many of you still buy the telegraph

I think most people who come on here would probably ask on here for recommendations, so probably not the best market research source :)

I buy the Observer about 4 or 5 times a year, which is 4 or 5 times a year more than I buy the Telegraph.

Unless it's a really difficult one to find I would ask on here or Google

I don't think I've bought one in the last forty-three years.;):D

Re: How many of you still buy the telegraph

I do still get it most days, but not always, i usually still get the Observer too, but sadly neither rag are as good as they once were! As far as advertising goes, the Telegraph would still win hands down over Observer, but its always been expensive, you might as well walk round town with a loud hailer as use the Observer for all the response your likely to get!!

Growing up we had it delived every night, and I enjoyed reading it.

Now I'll probably buy it twice a year, and it's a two minute read.

I do look at their website, mainly because the comments are fun, such as this one, which made me laugh.

What surprises me even more is that the middle of the road no political alliance, open mind person that is Rindi, did not dash to the computer key board when he go this Observer this week , surely he must have read that the Conservative complain, to the Standers Board, about Graham Jones, was upheld. If it had been Britcliffe who had had a complaint upheld in the same manner he would have been all over it like a rash, Quack Quack:gif_12::gif_12:

I heard about this earlier on in the week but didn't dash to gloat because kate and co would have accused me off stirring it.

But I will make just one point.

In the Observer article Graham accused the Tories of creating a witch hunt:rolleyes:
Over the last few years Graham Jones and the Labour Group have reported PB to the Standards Board on six or seven occasions, I'm not sure as there have been so many, all of which were rejected. Graham Jones is reported once and its upheld. I ask who is guilty of running a witch hunt;)

'Kate and co.' Jaysay ! ... feel honoured you consider me some sort of 'Leader of the Pack' :)

We have digressed badly here, however, this subject has been discussed at length in lots of other threads where Graham Jones has admitted publicly that he lives on Hodder Street:

I read the article several times and maybe/maybe not he did not mention it officially .. we will never know the truth will we ? There was an article somewhere showing him pointing out the pot holes on Hodder Street. Can't see that he was hiding the fact though ...

I cannot see that it would be all that an advantage to him anyway .. gather he lives further down on Hodder Street, and not affected at all by this one block of unadopted/pot-holed road at the top ?

Well you do tend to rap me over the knuckles occasionally if you think I'm stirring it, but my main point is the standards board is there for a purpose, and Cllr Jones thinks its fair game consistently reporting PB to the SB, which on each occasion those accusations have been thrown out, yet on the one time the boot is on the other foot and a complaint is upheld against him, he cries witch hunt. I have, in the main, always found your fair minded, kate, so who do you think is more guilty of instigating witch hunts PB or GJ. Simples

Will sit on the fence, and just say that point scoring is what all politicians are about these days.

I don't really think that the electoral here will be influenced how they feel about Graham Jones on this particular one Jaysay and will work for Graham as most people would see it as petty and Peter Britcliffe pursuing a witch hunt.

Kate I have never said Graham Jones was not a good councillor as it would be very remiss of me to do so, Graham works hard for his ward, but the only person I am aware of who never made a mistake was nailed to a cross over 2000 years ago:rolleyes: And on the same note PB has don't exactly the same for his electors, only over a much longer period;)

Not saying that at all ... seems was a technicality ... not an intention to cover up for self interest.

Still think that most people reading that article will view Peter Britcliffe as being petty in stretching this one out, and could even lose him votes in the future; certainly will not lose Graham Jones any.

By the way, I have an open mind still of which way I will vote in the General Election.

The standards board only sat for one meeting. They accepted that Graham had always made it clear that he lived on Hodder St. I was at the meeting along with other Peel ward residents supporting Graham.

No one suggested at the meeting that Graham did anything other than try to represent the people of Peel Ward.

The whole standards boards thing was basically a piece of Tory Political vindictiveness. They've never forgiving Graham for winning Accrington South in the County Elections

Both Messrs. Britcliffe and Jones may serve their wards well, and admittedly the former has been a councillor for much longer. I myself have praised Peter Britcliffe's work as a ward councillor, but the main difference is Cllr. Britcliffe is the leader of H.B.C., voted into that position by the majority ruling group, the Conservatives, and not by the people of the borough as a whole.

Since moving back to the area, I've been shocked and dismayed at some of the ludicrous actions, ideas, and policy decisions of H.B.C. under Cllr. Britcliffe's control.

Much as it might pain you, my criticisms aren't politically motivated.

I lived in Tory run London borough of Wandsworth for eleven years, and there was never a peep of protest from myself. Mainly because it was a great place to live, with excellent services, and that was all down to fantastic leadership. Something that I don't think we have here in Hyndburn.

As for Cllr. Jones, unlike Peter Britcliffe, he isn't my ward councillor, nor is he leader of the council. So in reality he presently has little impact on my life.

Though isn't this a thread about who reads Telegraph?

To get back on track, and in the interest of fairness, here's a quoted comment from the story regarding Graham Jones.

Wikidi, Accrington says...
3:18pm Wed 27 Jan 10 Any cuckoo can distinguish the difference between Oswaldtwiste and Accrington!
Oswaldtwiste has better roads and landscaping compared to Accrington because the council leader himself is a resident from there.

I buy the rag on a monday, once every two or three weeks; I then take it back down to the smoke with me in order for the various Dingle/Rovers supporters here to read the match reports of their latest defeat while I stand and point out the Stanley match report, which these days invariably describes another splendid victory.

Dont need to buy it for several reasons.

1) I prefer not to waste resources when I dont need to.
2) I prefer not to spend money when I dont need to.
3) I get all my news online & it is more relevant than some of the stuff in the papers.
4) I don't go anywhere near where its sold to get it daily.
5) Toilet paper is now available 3 ply, so I have no need for newspapers :D

the decline in local newspaper readership is one of things local politicians and civil servants love more than anything , fewer reporters who live in the area asking 'delicate' questions means less overview .
Used to be it was the way that you found out that someone you had once worked with or gone to school with had 'passed over' or the young lass from the next street whose wedding had been reported a year ago had given birth to twins , just general community news ... I'm thinking the local 'crime report" which everyone read was a better detterant than the present day ABSOs which rarely get a mention.

Sadly this is true, and our local politicans must be breathing a collective sigh of relief, that the days when local journalists had time to investigate, and uncover a newsworthy scoop, are now over.

When I moved to London I realised there wasn't the same pressure exerted by the local press, mainly because there wasn't one.

If you didn't pay your TV licence in London, no one knew.

If the same thing happened here, everyone knew about it, because it was reported in the local press.

'Up and down Accy market in a fur coat like Lady Docker, and not two bob to rub togethe to buy a telly licence.'

Oh the shame.

Yep, I get it at least once a week. It's got a more even spread across the borough than The Observer which seems to be written in Manchester.

Plus the Telegraph cryptic crossword is brilliant, good for a daily mental workout.
