Are they eck, any wool or cotton would slide sideways and get trapped in the pivot pins, all bobbins have a flange at the end, and straight bodies to stop the thread coming off, look at your sewing machine, and the thread holder that fits into the shuttle underneath. Bulloughs used to make all kinds of machines for handling cotton threads, and I never saw any bobbin or spool that shape.
That object has nowt to do with the wool or cotton industry. Its some sort of tensioning device.

I think it's probably some sort of tensioning device - possibly used in the textiles industry but maybe not.

The puzzle then is - why does the frame have no obvious means of securing it to a fixed point ?

I think my Dad found it when he emptied his Mums house out when she died a few years ago.

He still has loads of her junk in the garage and I keep telling him to get it shifted so I dont have to when he dies :eek::D
