Saw a Peregrine up at Wigan the other year, its taken round town by it's handler (paid for by the Council) as a pest control to keep all the mickeys (pigeons) away & off the streets, also down at the training area here, there's a German fella that has one & goes after the crows, really impressive animals.

A weeks a long time really - has he caught it yet? I suppose that depends how well it's trained - how much is he worth - aviary bred?

Here's a wild one that left the nest...

I wondered too if it had been found, hope so.

Have been watching a bird this week whilst up Ossy Moors ... sure it is a common one, but can't just identify it.

It hovers and glides (without flapping its wings) and then dives down suddenly. Looks about the size of a dove with larger wing span. Any ideas Kestrel ?

Could be a Sparrowhawk or even a kestrel Kate, did it make any sort of noise

No, Jaysay, no noise at all ... that was the fascination ... so silent and gliding on the wind, before it dive bombed into the fields (obviously after some prey).

Hi Katex the only other british bird of prey that hovers is a Buzzard but the size is much bigger than a kestrel. Sparrowhawks don't hover - so perhaps if it's the size of a dove it's a kestrel?

Thanks ... could well be ...have googled and certainly fits the description. Is always around .. will try to get a 'photo next time (try, being the operative word .. LOL).

Wonder what prey it was after ? Lots of rabbits in that field... would they not be a little large though ? Can it see field mice ?

I did muse it could have been Bubbles .. but didn't come when I shouted its name.. :)

Buzzard is quite a big impressive looking bird - bigger than a carrion crow, that said they are happy to eat worms, but can catch rabbits and some birds and also eat dead stuff.

If the bird had a fag hanging out of its mouth while pushing a pram with a dirty faced toddler in it eating a Gregs pasty then you should have pointed it in the direction of Accrington.

No it's not me katex. I have had less hair than the bird for at least 45 years and not just as handsome as it either.
The chap is either part owner or employee of the Birds of Prey Centre between Settle and Ingleton. If you click on thelink there are a some photos of the same chap and also loads of information.
Me and my missus have been quite few times and always enjoy the demos and a decent plate of scran in the excellent cafe there.
They allow some birds to fly to your arm after being released by the owner of the centre. He gives you a glove first.

I assume you mean Barrow in Furness Jaysay.
I went to Barrow many times when I was driving tankers and I seem to recall a sign somewhere along the way but it's must be over 25 years ago. I retired 11 years ago and worked the north east for ten before that and Scotland for a few years before that. Notice I never got the southern contract, I had to keep the MD in G&T to avoid it.

It was at Ravenglass I recall seeing signs for it when driving by and saw it in a brochure - not sure if it's still there though? :) Edit - I just checked and it is still there!

The other day ... over the moors where I work ... a batch of noisy seagulls flew over with another bird that didn't fly the same way.

Read later in the Observer that the tip was using Peregrine Falcons to scare the Seagulls off .. must have been this.

Had sorta' mentioned this on another forum .. have been asked why should they wish to frighten off the Seagulls as they would eat lots of the garbage ... presume because they make a mess of some sort or maybe noise nuisance ?

Hi Kate X, is that Whinney Hill? Just found this article on it...

Hawks used to scare off seagulls from Hyndburn rubbish tip (From Blackburn Citizen)

Are any seagulls nesting on buildings in Accrington or Blackburn areas? If so they can be a nuiscance. But I don't know if falcons would keep seagulls away if used repeatedly, but it depends how many? as they can get used to them unless they actually kill some?

katex 19-11-2010 15:24

Re: lost bird

The report was similar in the Observer, Kestrel, they are using 5 by the looks of it. This one I saw was certainly worrying them. Presumed they had flown from Whinney Hill ... had never seen them over the moors before.

Where exactly do Seagulls nest then ? Don't think any in town though.

They nest on the top of buildings - Gloucester which is not by the sea has loads of them breeding! :)

Is that where they were threatening to cull them by shooting them a few weeks ago .. mainly due to the noise disturbance ?

Re: lost bird

I have noticed an increase in the seagull(landgull) flock visiting Heys field Ossy - maybe due to the use of hawks at Whinney Hill.

They do not pose a nuisance on the field, and are quite interesting to watch as they 'raindance' for worms.

Probably - they should turn Whinney hill into a bird reserve and make a big lake there - give the seagulls a proper home - they have done that in London in a few places.:)

katex, yes they eat a lot of the garbage with the result that they end up full of salmonella, ecoli etc! Then when they dump on you, your children or your garden YOU can catch it. Apparently the bugs don't upset them, pidgeons are the same problem, that's why people shouldn't feed them in town centres. It just encourages them.

I am actually a bird watcher and I don't think I've ever been crapped on by a gull or pigeon or any other bird. Gulls often crap on people when protecting their nests - but as a rule being crapped on by a feathered friend (or fiend) is a rare occurence.

I tend to agree kestrelx but they sure have a beef with my windows, the window cleaner did mine yesterday morning about 9-15am and by 1pm some lovely little feathered creature had crapped all over one of them:D

I must be unlucky then. We were sat outside a cafe in Spain, having a tapas and drink.Unknown to me a cable ran right over my head. A very large pidgeon perched on it. It had obviously been trained as a bomb aimer by the Dambusters as it picked the exact aiming point. Spanish food must have the same effect on pidgeons as it has on me- it did the most enormouse poo exactly on target. I had some hair then and it was impossible to clean up! Almost put me off my beer!

You probably have some that roost above your window that is the cause. Obviously if you sit under a roost or have birds nesting or roosting and you sit under it then you are going to get soiled by them. But I don't think birds as a rule crap when they are flying!:)

Oh yes they do! Every time I wash my car they line up like Junker 88s and attack. There are no overhead wires, its not near the house but at least one always gets a direct hit. They carry quite a payload too, multiple hits! I'm sure they're cawing in German.
