Toast...what do you like on yours?
A favourite comfort food of mine, a strange question you may think but what do you like on yours?
My mother is staying with me for a holiday and favours Bananas on toast! (Possibly because they live within site of a banana plantation on Tenerife) She speads a slice of toast generously with honey then adds banana slices and squishes them on top. I don't fancy it but she insisits its great. A summer favourite of mine is what they call "Bruschetta" in Italy ( read as brusketta), you rub a slice of toasted crusty bread with garlic and then top with a mixture of seasoned chopped tomato and basil in olive oil.:alright: |
Re: Toast...what do you like on yours?
Tinned tomatoes on toast with loads of black pepper
|
Re: Toast...what do you like on yours?
Cheese, Marmite sometimes at the same time :D (I can hear the cries of disgust already :s_aim1:)

Re: Toast...what do you like on yours?
Marmalade...the dark sort with thick peel...the more peel the better.
Vegemite.......a much nicer flavour than Marmite...sort of smoother and without that horrible bitter back taste. Sliced fresh tomatoes.....a pinch of salt a pinch of sugar and pepper. Peanut butter.......lovely. Nutella...but only smeared on very thin. |
Re: Toast...what do you like on yours?
French toast - home made brioche soaked in egg and fried in olive oil.
|
Re: Toast...what do you like on yours?
Peanut butter AND chocolate spread is gorgeous

Re: Toast...what do you like on yours?

Crunchy Peanut Butter
or Chocolate Spread. |
Re: Toast...what do you like on yours?
Another vote for marmite but I am also quite happy with a decent spreading of a good quality butter

Toast, Peanut butter, plenty of bacon, raw onion stuck under the grill until the cheese I'm melting over the top is just about to self combust or else turn to charcoal. I eat it not with a napkin tucked to prevent spillage but instead a full bath towel. I usually end up if all goes according to plan, still having to go through a change of clothes, Nothing beats a decent gorge on sticky and drippy food. |
Re: Toast...what do you like on yours?
bacon

Re: Toast...what do you like on yours?
Bovril - NEVER Marmite!

Re: Toast...what do you like on yours?

Re: Toast...what do you like on yours?
I've got to admit I used to like those home made toasties, could always make an interesting snack out of almost anything.
My problem was over ambition, I would cram so much filling in it was almost impossible to close the machine. The above toastie only has about 10% of the ingredients that can be fitted into it, if a little determination, aided by a pair of mole grips to keep the lid shut is used. http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...ZB5Gi1AK825ZLQ |

Re: Toast...what do you like on yours?
Toast ... no way .... even soggy with beans is barely palatable ... Now, fried bread with HP, that is a delicacy:alright: By the by, anyone still use a toasting fork?
|
Re: Toast...what do you like on yours?
This is going to sound gross...but I like dripping on toast.......but it has to be from my own cooked joints of meat....beef or pork......with the jellied meat juices....don't knock it if you havent tried it.
Oh, and for those who might worry about my arteries....don't. I have dripping on toast so rarely that it hardly matters. |
Re: Toast...what do you like on yours?
Eric, I like fried bread too...but I don't have that very often either.
And just by the way...there was an article in the paper that says they have changed the recipe of HP sauce.......taken 26% of the salt out of it.......for health reasons. I hate the fascist health police......aren't we big enough and ugly enough to decide what we want to eat...and whether it will do us harm......the alcoholics and the drug addicts are allowed to have their 'poison'....but HP sauce(the original) has to be tampered with 'for our health'. |

Re: Toast...what do you like on yours?
Best butter usually, bacon less frequently, boiled ham with soft boiled egg, burst the yolk and add salt and black pepper occasionally!
|
Re: Toast...what do you like on yours?
White toast, in the toast rack to cool ( I don't like it hot with the butter melting) with anchor lighter spreadable butter and good bitter marmalade, not cheap stuff - I'm very particular about toast, in fact a bit of a nuisance!

"Anchor Spreadable is great for sandwiches and there's no need for the butter conditioner. It's Anchor Butter softened with canola oil for extra spreadability. She could always try this Cashy! Britain's cheapest meal -recommended in today's austere financial climate...
"Victorian age recipe, toast sandwich, which consists of a slice of toast between two slices of bread and butter, and some pepper and salt for taste is UK's cheapest meal, according to the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). The meal costs 7.5 pence and was first promoted by Victorian food writer Mrs Beeton." I've just done a bit of research into canola oil which is also known as rapeseed oil and it has a lot of very beneficial effects on the body including apparently lowering cholesterol, and is also good for the heart and blood. Just goes to show that you can get completely opposing information when searching on the internet.

My toastie thing is a beef paste sandwich just popped into the toaster, simple but heaven, and if I am feeling posh when it's cooked in the toaster, I put crisps on. Plain only, no strange flavours that would be disgusting.
