Have you been up the Twin Towers?

Well back in the late 80's I went up one of the twin towers with my girlfriend at the time. It was a tourist attraction then and for a few dollars you could be taken up in the lifts to the roof and allowed to walk round a roped off area and take photographs of New York

World Trade Center 09/11/2001 - YouTube

I think after that attempt in the early 90's by terrorists on the World Trade Centre they closed it off and stopped tourism also I wonder is that when they locked the doors so no one could get onto the roof!

Anyone else been up the twin towers when on holiday back in those days?

Let me know - cheers ;)

I've spent one day in New York when working in Philadelphia we got the train up for the day. We walked past the Twin Towers. Ironically it was 11th September 2000.

Was supposed to be going to New York with a friend in November 2001(we were hoping to be there for Thanksgiving)......the 9/11 situation put paid to that.
We didn't go.
It was always one of the places I wanted to visit.......sadly, it won't happen now.
I would not go to a country that treats all its tourists as terrorists.:(

Guess I was lucky then, don't have the photos as the girlfriend took em! Went up the Empire State building as well which they say is a little bit of Accrington (Nori) though there is no sign on the building - is it fact that Nori bricks were used to build it?

I went up the Empire State Building a few months before 9/11 and wonfdered why there was so much security around. There was never that much when I went up Blackpool Tower!

I certainly got my answer a few months later!

Well I've never been to the good old US of A but even if I had wouldn't have considered a trip up the towers for the same reason I've never been up Blackpool Tower Vertigo

They couldn't have done, as I went up around '98. The security was pretty heavy, though - searches etc. Went up on my own, as Mrs H had discovered a shopping mall in the basement of one of the buildings and preferred some retail therapy to going up another tall building (we'd been up the Empire State a couple of days before). Stood at the top and watched the sun set over New York. What struck me was how quiet it was, as it was too high to hear the traffic noise down below.

The town is a former centre of the cotton and textile machinery industries. The town is famed for manufacturing the hardest and densest building bricks in the world, "The Accrington NORI" (iron), which were used in the construction of the Empire State Building and for the foundations of Blackpool Tower; famous for its football team and for having Europe's largest collection of Tiffany Glass.

Went up the Twin Towers, in 1981 dd liberty and the Empire State as well.
For information in Feb this year, had no problems going to Liberty Island and going up the lady same thing for Empire State.
Also the Uss Intrepid is worth a look.

On a side note, the US have a nice system, if you are in the armed services, from any nation and you go in uniform, you get free entry, preferential queuing.
Why we in England cannot honour our lads and girls that way. Unfortunately I realised I was getting old, when I saw the sailors from HMS Gloucester.

In my local park they placed a piece of debris from the World Trade Centre as some kind of display - art or for some other reason! It's basically some metal girders with some steel stuck to it!

Why anyone would visit the US, when the most beauriful country on earth (in the large size category;)) is right next door is beyond me:confused: Screw the paranoid yanks and their Homeland Security:alright: And if you like heights, try something like this:

EdgeWalk - CN Tower | La Tour CN

I might just give it a shot. And if I should fall, think only this of me, that there's a big hole in some corner of a foreign field which is for ever the bottom end of Clayton:alright:;)

I sense from your post that you don't want to try it:D

That is fine if you don't actually want to visit New York. My ambition was.....to visit New York and do the touristy things. So when New York moves to Canada.......I will be there like a shot. Somehow I don't see it happening.

I really do think that my days of long haul travel....travel by plane, are over.
I no longer even have a passport.

I don't think that New York will move to Canada ... come to think of it, I don't think we want it:D Closest you could get would be the Jays playing the Yankees:rolleyes: I personally can't stand the Big Apple.

Eric, you might not like the Big Apple.......but at least you have seen it.
I might not like it if I ever got to see it......but it was one of the places on my 'bucket' list.

Use google maps ... that way you won't get mugged:cool: And it's cheap. New York isn't;)

Margaret Pilkington 13-09-2011 17:10

Re: Have you been up the Twin Towers?

Yes, I could use Google maps...but I would love to go and take my own pictures of places of interest.
I have learned as I have matured(got older), that you can't put a price on personal experiences.......and that memories cost money initially but you can reap the rewards when you look back at the times you had.

Anyway I can shut the door on that ambition now.......it would be easier to become a brain surgeon.

Mancie posted something that has been removed about some twins! However it reminded me that I did actually go up the real Twin Towers - World Trade Centre with some girls that were twins! Thanks for reminding me.

Went up in May 2000 and ate at "Windows on the World" - a superb restaurant and a memorable meal.

Re: Have you been up the Twin Towers?

Went up in a very fast lift in 1997, brother in law is from NY so we got the full monty in terms of sightseeing. My main memory was looking out over the Hudson river and pointing at a very small statue. It as the statue of Liberty, from the top of the tower the statue was tiny. Stood on the glass floor which allowed you to look down at the ground below your feet, never been the same since
