Fashion's devotion to Black - do you wear it?

Not really a colour yet it makes up a large part of my wardrobe. The little black dress (championed by Coco Chanel), black trousers for all seasons to dress up or down, black lingerie....black boots, my patent black high-heels, the list goes on.

Black is full of symbolism. Think black: thoughts, looks, moods, magic, shirts....

White is worn for Christenings and weddings, think purity and light. Black for funerals since roman times, think death, darkness....evil? Good and Bad -Ben Hur rides in the Chariot race with white arab horses, Mesalla has Black ones - he's the baddy... Then there was that song, Black is black..

Black is supposed to make us look slimmer and more chic, even cheap black clothes have this effect..a winner all round.:)

Do you wear black, how do you wear it and how does it make you feel?

I have quite alot of black and alot of dark greys.

I think that it does make you feel more "dressed up" if you know what I mean and when it comes to underwear for a special occasion -;)-black every time really for me and so far I havent had any complaints!

Oh yes I wear it a lot... when I go shopping I tell myself no more black but I obviously don't listen.

Funnily enough, wearing brown makes me fell really depressed...

Actually one colour I never ever wear is white... to me it's a non colour and I couldn't be arsed with all the washing anyway.

You won't find a single white item in my wardrobe - not even in my underwear drawer.

Some cultures only wear white/off white for funerals rather than black. Some other cultures wear red as well as black I believe.

Most of my evening dresses are black. I think it is more forgiving rather than a case of it being more or less attractive. I don't wear a particular colour more than any other on a general day to day basis. However, I also never wear white and don't own any plain white underwear. Just a few items with patterns. I generally prefer blacks, greys and bright colours. I never wear pastels really either...

That sounds just like me blazey - except you are 40 years younger. Forgot to mention pastels in my earlier post - but yuk! ;)

Glad to see from your profile that you are helping to keep Lancaster Uni's bars afloat - and if you are doing law a penchant for black/grey might be a good start to a career!

You're right too about white for mourning (China/Japan), also red in S Africa, purple in Thailand and yellow in Egypt and Burma. Or at least that's what the www tells me!

Taste in clothing colour change as ageing happens.
I no longer wear bright colours because it contrasts too much with greying hair and paling skin. (avoiding the mutton dressed as lamb look)

I do have some 'old lady beige', but my current preferences are for muted greens and greys.

Little Boy Blue by Eugene Field

The little toy dog is covered with dust,
But sturdy and staunch he stands;
And the little toy soldier is red with rust,
And his musket moulds in his hands.
Time was when the little toy dog was new,
And the soldier was passing fair;
And that was the time when our Little Boy Blue
Kissed them and put them there.

Re: Fashion's devotion to Black - do you wear it?

I do think some colours, although black and white aren't technically colours, suit some people more than others.

However, I do think people should be able to dress in whatever colours they feel like wearing.

I detest colour fascists.

Used to drive me mad. Timid little mouse people coming in with their limited colour/shade palettes, after having their skin/hair colour analysed, by some so called expert from Color (sic) Me Bad, or whatever it's called.

If it makes you feel good, when you wear it, it is the right colour for you.

The only colour rule an English gentleman needs to follow is for shoes.

'No brown in town'.

Even if the shoes do match the handbag.

Stick with black.

Grey and greens with pale skin and greying hair sounds a bit "fade into the background" Margaret - I think you should go for strong blues, reds, purples and brighter greens. Accesorize with scarves and make the most of your distinguished grey locks! Black will look good too just not directly on you face, scarf again...:)

MargaretR 22-11-2011 13:11

Re: Fashion's devotion to Black - do you wear it?

'Accessorize with scarves' - old ladies wearing scarves are as repugnant to me as white cardigans on Blackpool prom. Shawls and serapes draped over a coat are fine and chic.

If your neck ain't fit to be seen, wear a polo or turtle neck.

I try to achieve top to toe in one colour - it heightens the image.

I recall that in my 50s I was braver with colour. I had a bright orange trouser suit.
As eyebrows raised as I entered the local WMC, my response was 'I've just been tangoed'

Should have said Pashmina's -sounds better!

Had an orange trouser suit myself back in the early 70's -mum made one each for me and my sister Denise. Flared trousers and a waist-coat -it seemed very glam back then....

This is my result,

PROBLEM UNDERLYING THE PRESENT STRESS -- You presently need to be appreciated and respected for being an exceptional -- not ordinary -- individual. This is because you have the need to increase your self-esteem and personal worth, both in your eyes and in the eyes of others who are important to you. You avoid anything mediocre and like to think that you live by high standards.

DESIRED OBJECTIVE -- You have a deep desire for tenderness and sensitivity in your life. You are attracted to anything aesthetic and tasteful. CURRENT INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR -- You feel that you are burdened with more than your fair share of problems. However, you stick to your goals and try to overcome your difficulties by being flexible and accommodating.

Bloody hell the third paragraph is me down to a tee.
My eyes nearly leaked when I read it!!! :D

Completely agree. If you want to wear it, wear it. Not sure about the brown shoes though.

And as for the following, taken from Margaret's colour test reference above... no wonder some people are so f****d up:

When you have made all of your selections, in the order of your most-to-least favorite, your analysis will automatically appear in the top window.
The first result will define the CURRENT PROBLEM or theme of the current tension or stress in your life. The next result will define the UNDERLYING GOALS and drives that are currently active in your personality. These drives may be successfully expressed or they may currently be frustrated. The third result will describe the current INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR that is hindering your ability to reach these goals.

Re: Fashion's devotion to Black - do you wear it?

There is only one Hollywood actress that I admire - Diane Keaton - she abhors plastic surgery.

A quote of hers -
"It`s kind of true, you do disappear off the planet if you are a middle-aged woman, but that has some advantages as well. Because too much of my life was spent waiting to be seen. Hoping to be seen, hoping to be picked. Once you realize that you aren`t looked at that way any more, other things start to happen and you have to depend on other things to get by."

I think you must have always been confident, style wise.

Cashy always tells a good tale about you, when he was deejaying somewhere, and you hadn't seen each other for a while.

You came in, removed your headwear, and threw it across to him.
