What was the name of.......
The Massey pub(at least I think it was a Massey pub) on the opposite corner to the Bridge pub(Church Street) in Accrington?
Only those who were out and about drinking in the sixties, will be able to scratch their heads and wrack their brains for this one....Come on Cashy and Jaysay...I'm relying on you. This pub closed in the sixties and the day after it closed, the Astronaut opened in Union Street. Karma for the answer.(and I don't know the answer, but I will trust you lot) |
Re: What was the name of.......
Was that not the Bay Horse,Margaret, that we have talked about recently. Not sure about the Brewer...don't drink beer...LOL.
|
Re: What was the name of.......
I don't think so Kate.....I thought it was called The Crown........the girl whose parents had this pub went to school with me......Susan Denwood.
It was a very small pub...only one room....and in my recollection it was Accrington's little Crown, because the big Crown was near Joe Morts........well, that is unless my memory is failing and anyone out there knows different. But thanks Kate. |
Re: What was the name of.......
Think the Bay Horse may have not been operating then as a pub anyway.... although the buildings were still called Bay Horse buildings.
Don't remember one on the corner. Haha... yes, if there were one, Cashy will know. By the way, do you mean diagonally opposite or one of the other corners ? |
Re: What was the name of.......
As I say, it was very small and easy to miss.
|
Re: What was the name of.......
There was a pub called the Crown Inn on Church Street according to the 1909 map.
The Bay Horse was facing the bottom of Warner Street. |
Re: What was the name of.......
this request is not to satisfy my wonderings, but himself has been down to the bowling club and they were discussing it there.
Himself remembers the last night in there before it closed.......in those days one pub had to close before another one could open....and it closed so that the Astronaut could have a licence. I don't know if it is the same today.....one pub closes before another one gets to open........more pubs are closing today than opening! |
Re: What was the name of.......
Was it on the opposite corner to the Bridge pub Steve?
If it was, then you get the Karma. |

There's usually a P.H., Inn or Hotel at the location. It shows the Commercial, Bay Horse and Bridge but not The Crown but the name's on a list of "Beerhouses" printed on the back of the map. |
Re: What was the name of.......
thanks Steve, much appreciated......perhaps the older drinkers on here will be able to throw some light on the subject. It probably was more of a beerhouse......it was only the size of a living room. Karma anyway.
|
Re: What was the name of.......
Thanks, Margaret!
There is a small building where Barnes Furniture is now - maybe too small to print in...? |
Re: What was the name of.......
Looks about right. Steve... excellent.
Just looked at the licencing of beer houses for 1869. Crown Inn is listed ... was No. 32, which sounds about right ? A Martha Bentley was the applicant. |
Re: What was the name of.......
Always known as The Little Crown.
|
Re: What was the name of.......

Mind you,was another Crown Inn in 1869 ...listed as Dyke Nook. Not the one way up Whalley Road. Think an area near the Castle Pub was listed as this. Was probably allowed though, because one was in New Accrington, the other in Old Accrington. |
Re: What was the name of.......
I knew Accyweb would come up trumps...as usual.
Good stuff Kate...Karma to you too.....it will come up unsigned as the mouse just fell onto the enter key.:D The mouse was a bit shaken, but alright now! |

Was it the Junction next door to the Junction chippy, across the road from the swimming baths?
|
Re: What was the name of.......
Yes, that was a John Smiths house.
I had a big crush on (Neville) the son of the landlord....I was only 12 at the time, but thought he was very handsome...he(alas) never noticed me. |
Re: What was the name of.......
Can anyone tell me what year the Astronaut pub opened? Another one for Cashy and crew.

Re: What was the name of.......
Wasn't there a cinema next to the little Crown, the name Ritz comes to mind like the dance place.I remember queuing up to see a film there can't recall the name of the film but all teenagers went because Frankie Lane was in it singing That Old Black Magic in the film.
P.S. When you look back we were as daft as all teenagers through the years. |

Re: What was the name of.......
I always thought the little Crown was the one on Whalley Road that Stanley have taken over? Surely, there couldn't have been three Crown pubs in the town, all operating at the same time?
|
Re: What was the name of.......
No Steve, In Accrington, there was a little Crown(which was the one on the Ritz corner) and there was the big Crown...which was near Joe Morts dancing place(I'm talking early sixties here).
If we are talking about nowadays, then the little Crown is the one near the Stanley ground. The little Crown in Accrington closed mid sixties and the licence was taken by the Astronaut pub in Union St. Maybe you are too young to remember the little Crown in Church Street. This pub we are talking about, was only the size of a terraced house and the licensed premises were just one room. |
Re: What was the name of.......
Right, thanks, Margaret, you learn summat new everyday!
|
Re: What was the name of.......
I remember them as The Big Crown, The Little Crown, and The Crown Inn.
|
Re: What was the name of.......

Oh, and the one at Dyke Nook. Not the one near the Dyke Nook house up Whalley Road, 'cause is listed as Old Accrington. Further down near The Castle. Know you know all this, just wanted you to confirm the Dyke Nook area for me ('cause I knew you wouldn't be able to resist this thread). |

Can't think of any other possible pubs between the Castle and Crown apart from Oaklea and Grey Horse today. |
Re: What was the name of.......
Twas the Crown as i recall was just up past Barnes n before the Ritz cinema a very small Massey House, never actually had a drink in it as i was ejected whilst ordering me first.
|
Re: What was the name of.......
Thanks Cashy....I knew you would know...and my memory isn't so dusty....seeing as I remember it was a Massey house.

All the houses around the Crown were addressed as Dyke Nook seemingly and not Whalley Road as they are now. Dyke Nook Lodge was not built until 1901. |
Re: What was the name of.......
All this talk of Massey's has brought back the morbid fear of Massey's Mild beer, not one for the faint hearted, in fact it was so good they rarely sold it in Burnley pubs:D

If I may be permitted a teeny correction  Dyke Nook Lodge dates from 1907 not 1901... Dyke Nook Lodge - Accrington - Lancashire - England | British Listed Buildings And I see from google Streetview that the nameplate on the gatepost says Dyke Nook not Dyke Nook Lodge! |

Re: What was the name of.......
I don't know John.
My auntie Phyllis used to frequent the place.......I can remember her getting 'done up to the nines' to go....spending most of Saturday in curlers and a headscarf.......lots of powder and perfume......red peepie toe high heels(they impressed me the most)....stiff starched net underskirts.......all this effort went into the night out at the Ritz.......I figured it must be quite a place to go......but never could dance so I never ever found out. Maybe someone will be along in a minute to answer that thorny question John. |

I can,t answer the the ?s about the Ritz but the hair in curlers brought the memories flooding back. We used to go down town on a Sat affy wi our hair in curlers an a headscarf on and have an oxo in the market.I also remember getting my 1st net underskirt a yellow one it got ripped to shreds in the Funhouse at Blackpool.

Did frequent North Pier quite often in my younger days - sort of hors d'ouvres before the passion wagon back to Accrington. The Ritz was still going in 59/60 as was Bulloughs Club which was down the same entry, but turn right instead of left into the Ritz. When did the Ritz cinema close? |

I base me guess on the fact i saw The Cockleshell Heroes yon when i was early teens, n the Ritz wasn't open much longer after that.

Re: What was the name of.......
The closure is not recorded in the book A Hyndburn Chronology in 1960-63. It might be found in An Accrington Mixture, but I cannot find my copy.

The Crown inn (and it was a Massy’s house) is the correct answer. I used to go there regularly. As someone mentioned earlier, it was known as the “Little Crown” in order not to be confused with the other Crown Inn.
