Used to have loads when I was young, don't know what happened to them. Wouldn't have made my fortune though!

If you're after making money invest in some decent whiskies, limited editions or special bottlings, feis Isle fillings are usually a pretty good bet. Having said that wasn't there something last year about a batch of 20p pieces being minted without dates & being worth quite a few bob ?

Opinion varies as to how much those coins are worth...

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...face-value.htm

Mix-up at Royal Mint creates dateless 20p pieces worth 50 - Telegraph

My other half drives me mad searching through his change - he's still looking for one!

Your other investment suggestion is much better - but don't drink it all!

I had a couple of Spey Whisky special millennium blend in presentation boxes which were for the export market only, My son in law got them from clients and he doesn't drink whisky so he gave me one and my old man the other which came to be when he died, the boxed bottles would be worth quite a lot today but I said sod it and supped the contents and what a very nice drink it was too;)

What's the point of having a good malt whiskey and not supping it . I would have done the same.

Agreed, you can't take it with you and as long as jaysay kept the boxes he can still look at them and remember that lovely taste!

There isn't, that's why I try to get at least 3 bottles of a particular "Special". One to open & enjoy, the second to enjoy it again & introduce some of the peasantry I associate with to the pleasures & joys of a decent, not your standard run of the mill Whisky & the third to save for posterity & as an investment.

A little example, Feis Isle 2005 Bunnahabhain 12, Port finish - cask strength (766 bottles) GBP 55,00 at the time, seen on online Whisky sales/auction sites GBP 200,00 - 250,00 good investment to my mind. :)

Ya and believe me it was very very nice Frank, Spey is noted as being one of the very best Scotch Whiskies and I ain't arguing, I also had another one Ballantines 21 year old in a blue bottle and a velvet bag, I still have the bottle and the bag but sadly the whisky had to be used for pure medical purposes:rolleyes::D

One of the boxes is on my bed Gordon, I keep my current meds in it so I can access them easily and have a lovely taste in my mouth while doing it:D

Whisky is a good anaesthetic

.......and overloads the liver
.......and encourages overgrowth of candida albicans in the gut.

Everyone has their own poison of choice.

We were on holiday in Scotland quite a few years since and decided that it was the wife's turn to drive and we would go on the Speyside Whiskey Trail, which took in quite a few distilleries. The introductory speeches got boring after a while but the freebies were most welcome. You could get Brahms and List fro free.

Idea, given the title of this thread - sup the whisky and keep your small change in the bottle - got to find one with a big enough neck first though, Highland Park used to be very good but they've since changed the bottle.

I've had an 8 pint Bells whisky bottle for coins in my bedroom for years, only emptied it about a fortnight ago there was £138 in it, well a bit more but my daughter took it to the ASDA coin machine think they take about 2% for their trouble, so its not worth the hassle emptying the bottle and bagging the money yourself

We sometimes go to the Buck Inn in Paythorne for a meal. It is a big pub with a small well stocked bar. He has the largest display of malt whiskies in the area . On tuesday nights he has whiskey tasting sessions. If you can tell 5 malts you win a bottle of Malt of the Month.

Well you could go and buy yourself another 8 pints of Bells with that and still have a bit of cash left over. Not bad.

Here's a thought, get yourself sets of Euro's for Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal & possibly Ireland, so when they come crashing out of the Euro & return to their original coinage, you could be onto a collectors item at some point in the future. ;)

We'd all be better looking for farthings based on this article Frank ;)

Bet on raindrops at stately home that was paid in 5,000 farthings 123 years ago bears fruit for descendants when coins are sold for £65,000 | Mail Online

"Who'd have thowt it" as my old mate Wandering Walter would have said.

I have kept some of the old Lira -but then they were never worth much anyway!

Life seemed better before the Euro when I had a few millions in my bank account ;):D
