BT Infinity
 
Has any members got BT infinity. I have heard from BT that Accrington is now wired for infinity. Has anyone got any issues with infinity?

I have just checked availability (using my postcode) on the BT website, and Infinity is available for me.

If you are in an area where you can get Virgin/F/O you can get infinity. BT must have a deal with Virgin. My area hasn't got it

i dont think ntl/virgin have expanded their service in teh last 10 years but if they have it hasnt been much.

BT were supposed to have upgraded all thier exchanges by mid 2012 so people at the end of the exchange didnt get slow broadband like 0.5 in some areas and got decent speeds.

As usual too much money in the fat cats pockets and not enough put into upgrading and maintaining their systems just like the rest such as the waterboard

Whats the story with Virgin/NTL/Cable. It seemed like they dug up Accrington and only bothered to do half of it. I seem to remember they did the same to Steiner ST when I was growing up. No Cable there either :)

It wasn't NTL or Virgin that laid the cables it was a firm called Ninex back then Ntl took them over then Virgin took Ntl over they cabled most streets down one side and where going to do the other but got took over so most of Accrington is cabled on one side of the street only lucky for me its the side i am on:D

No idea it does seam strange just to do one side of a street.
There must be some logic behind it but no idea why the only thing i can think is they wanted to say "the whole of lancashire was cabled" in an advertising campaign but not say but only half can use or get it:)

i got a phone call from bt trying to flog me infinity a couple of months ago ... and they said id get up to 40meg .. i said if im paying for 40 then i want 40 ... not up to ... and they did a check on my line i would get 28 meg ... and i said well if im paying for 40 i want 40 and not 28 .. it didnt seem to go down very well :p:p:p

Didn't think it worked that way with cable. I heard that its a share thing rather that distance from an exchange like it is with DSL. If loads of people in Ur neighborhood hood are downloading then Ur connection slows down a little. Dunno if that's true or not
How fast is bts DSL capability? Anyone know?

They didn't do most of Accrington, round Woodnook they did 2 blocks one side in Nuttall St. From Broad Oak Rd East side of Manchester Rd to end of 1st block, some of Manchester Rd, Marl Terrace area. They had also marked out with blue spray paint one side of Mountain Lane to Rough Lee Rd, you can still see the little cast iron covers on all the junction boxes on the above streets, but none of them appear to have been connected to the main supply, when every thing went pear shaped. I remember there were loads on complaints about the shoddy workmanship in relaying pavements, and leaving trenches open for too long.

Infinity isn't cable, it's fibre to the cabinet then copper to your house, they are looking at fibre to the premises but that will cost a fatuous boy

with them saying fibre optic on the advert I assumed.... and with only certain people being able to get it in accrington.... I assumed again. Silly me :D

we must be cabled up in colne so to speak, i tried the bt, expected them to come and connect, they sent a box and other bits, through post ,not that way minded to put together myself but had a go,it advertised that computer could be any where in your home,and would be wireless, couldnt get a signal so rang them, the answer was buy a cable it will work then, not bad for a wireless system, needless to say i bagged it up and sent it back, the tried to bill me but trading standards sorted it

A few months ago I switched my ISP from Orange to BT.

I did so because I was frequently experiencing internet downtime with Orange and wanted a more reliable provider.

I chose the BT Option1, which at £13 monthly, was the same as I had been paying to Orange.

I soon found out that BT were limiting me to 10MB a month, whereas Orange hadn't.

Every month I got close to exceeding my monthly allowance despite rarely watching BBCiplayer and never watching live news (which I did often previously).

I felt cheated and wished I had at least explored the option of Virgin cable (which is available at my address)
I am tied to an 18 month BT contract.

The options open to me were - put up with the inadequate 10MB or pay an extra £5 a month to get 40MB.

Then news of Infinity arrival reached me on this thread, so I looked at what it offered.
I found that I could get Infinity for that extra £5 a month, along with the 40MB.
The forcasted speed for my address far exceeds what I get now (can't remember precise figures quoted)

So I have signed up for it.

The difference between the upgrade to 40Mb(broadband Option2), which before was my only option, and the Infinity, is a one off payment of £25 for an engineer's visit and a different home hub. The price of both is £18 a month. There is an ever faster Infinity option with no download/upload limit , but that costs £26 a month.

There is a video on the BT website which explains what the engineer does at the home visit.
I will be switched on to Infinity on 18th July.

Doesn't sound bad that Margaret, I had been thinking about increasing my download capability so I can connect my hub to my Sky HD box which will enable me to access more films when I want them, think I'll sign up myself

I think you mean 10Gb a month download limit Margaret, not 10Mb.
I have been with BT a long time and was limited to 10Gb a month and I had a download speed of just under 10Mb.
I kept seeing the advert for BT offers so decided to give them a call.
They gave me unlimited download and the speed is the same, they dropped my payments and I am now £1.30 a month better of, it pays to ring and tell them you are not happy with the service and hopefully they will give you a better deal.

The reason I wanted to increase my download amount was due to the fact that my friend gave me his Sky account password so I could watch the football now and again and I don't have Sky. With his password I can access Sky via Skygo on my laptop and connect to the TV via the HDMI cable.
The first match I watched used half my 10Gb monthly download amount so now I am unlimited I don't have to worry about extra cost.

There was no buffering when I watched the Sky football on my laptop so my download speed is fast enough not to want Infinity.

Are you not better off with sky for your phone and internet seeing as you have sky tv?

I got rid of SKY TV years ago.

I am compelled to pay for a communal ariel that would provide it, but I gave away the box about 5years ago and stopped paying any Sky subs about 7 years ago.

I am not interested in paying for any TV coverage.
The few programmes (mainly drama) that I want to watch are available online.

When my TV set 'dies' I won't be replacing it.

I watched the last two matches of the season, Man U on one channel and flicked about watching Man C on another using Sky go with my laptop linked to the TV, it was a very good picture, nu buffering but used 3 gig.
Now it is unlimited I have no worries.
I don't watch TV much less still Skygo but it's there if I want it.

I live in Rossendale & had Infinity installed last October when it first became available here. It was the 'up to' 38Mb down, 9.5 Mb up speed with a 40GB cap option.

I was getting around 25Mb download and around 6Mb upload. The closer you are to those green BT street boxes, the better. I'm around 100 meters away.
This was a lot faster than i was receiving before & was happy with it with the exception of the 40GB limit.

BT kept telling me i was using over the 40GB most months. As an example, in May they claimed i used on average 3.75GB/day for the first 13 days. These figures were not possible.

As i will be doing more work over broadband in the next few months, i upgraded (12 month contract) to their go faster, unlimited download option of up to 76Mb/19Mb. I'm getting around 55Mb/19Mb.

Its good, its reliable & if you get a capped service, assume BT will lie, so measure it yourself from day one.

Whilst I was restricted to 10GB I read my usage monitor every day.
If you have wireless enabled on you homehub, you take the risk that a neighbour is 'piggybacking' your connection.

I disabled the wireless facility at the hub and use an ethernet cable.

Ya that's why I'm ringing them, at the moment just logging onto AccyWeb uses nout, but if I link to Sky it will cost me a fortune

Sky don't support my emergency lifeline Neil or I Would have changed to them over 12 months ago, I had everything in place, then I mentioned my lifeline and they pulled the plug, their phone line won't support it

The BT email response to my upgrade request indicates that while I wait I will not be charged for exceeding the allowance this month.
Consequently I am 'having a field day' on Iplayer and youtube.

I have used 3.77Gb in one week - most of it yesterday:D

Margaret, I have the same BT package as you...but in the time I have been on BT I have only once got anywhere close to my download limit(and this was by accident - my mouse had an epileptic fit while downloading a music LP in MP3 format from Amazon - it dowloaded the same music about 43 times). I download very little I mainly use my machine to e-mail, browse, use accyweb and upload pictures to flickr....I will await your reports on infinity, but I doubt it would be worthwhile for me.

To be honest I haven't a clue how much I use never have, just know that if I start watching films it will probably cost me an arm and a leg, that's thanks to MargaretR telling us about over use when she first got BT Broadband and she was using Iplayer:rolleyes:

The BT engineer has been and gone - it took about an hour in total.
My download speed is 37.43MB (upload 7.74) and my monthly allowance of GBs has quadrupled to 40.

Is the hub different to the ordinary new BT hub, I had that big white box until earlier this year until an engineer came out regarding a fault and he changed it then

I still have the same hub, but it is now linked to a small white box(about the same size as an exterior hard drive), which it sits on.

The only inconvenience I found is the 'white box' also needs a power supply.

Margaret, did they have to run the fibre optic cable right to your house or just to the cabinet in the road nearby and then the old copper wire from the cabinet to the hub?
What I mean by cabinet is the green box that sits on the ground nearby and connects to the exchange.

There is a cabinet about 50 yards from me which is now connected to the fibre optic network, then copper wire runs from the cabinet through an underground tube to my house.
I was told that I cannot have BTinfinity yet as I am not on the network.
I get 10Mb download speed mostly and have unlimited download so I am not too bothered about upgrading when it is ready.

It is certainly fast enough to watch football on SkyGo via the laptop without buffering.

He certainly did no 'laying of cables'.

I got a phone call at about 8.30 when he told me that he was about to disconnect my phone and would be visiting me shortly. I presume that he was at the nearest outside/street junction box when he made that call, and there would already be fibre optics from the exchange to that box.

He did no work on the copper cable which comes from that street box.
It is the fibre optic length which supplies the speed, and the copper wire length which reduces it. That's why speed can vary between nearby properties. The one with the shortest length of copper gets the best internet speed.

The logistics of your property sound similar to mine:confused:
Maybe the fact that there are virgin cables laid in this road has made a difference. I don't know enough about the technical aspects to say anything for definite.

There were no cables Virgin or otherwise before my bungalow was built 18 moths ago, Maybe the fibre optic cable is not connected all the way to the exchange yet and that is why when I look at BT website it says I am unable to have BTinfinity.

you barely get 1mb so someones been telling you porkies trying to sell you something they know wont work :mad:

True but mostly my homephone and broadband deal is good with O2. BT's bills always seem to turn out higher in the past, whatever deals they are doing.
