Vomiting brown?

In Winchester last night I was sick. I did have quite a bit to drink but usually im ok with the amount I drank. I vomited when I got back to the guest house I was sick when I went to the toilet. It was dark brown and looked as though I had been eating raw coffee day. Never seen anything like it.

Re: Vomiting brown?

Thats called bile lad, nothing to worry about, you usually get that coming up if you haven't eaten....i think, google it just to make sure though, i'm no nurse, i have a lot of acid in my tummy, i get that a lot

Margaret Pilkington 11-09-2012 06:34

Re: Vomiting brown?

No......Flashy, sorry to contradict you....bile is yellow to a dark green.
Restless you must see a doctor. Vomiting 'coffee grounds'is a sign of a gastric bleed.
Go to A&E. See a medical professional and do it soon! Please.

Re: Vomiting brown?

I was going to the docs. Should I go to the hospital instead?

Margaret Pilkington 11-09-2012 07:07

Re: Vomiting brown?

If you are home then go to your own doctor......make an urgent appointment.
If you are still away go to A&E. This is something that needs prompt attention.

yeah i am back home. 20 mins of ringing docs finally got through. Going at 9

Re: Vomiting brown?

Yep bile is definitely yellow (plenty of morning sickness!) a quick look on the Internet will tell you to visit a doctor, hope everything turns out ok.

"No more alcohol or spicy food" Docs orders

28 day course of Omeprazole. Is the medicine he gave me. Also says my constant coughing in the mornings is related

Sorry for my mistake Rob, Margaret was of course right, i am on Omeprazole too, been on them for years, they do tend to bloat me and stop me going to the toilet for days too but they do get rid of the stupid amounts of acid i have in my tummy

Re: Vomiting brown?

Glad you got sorted Rob.....keep on top of it and if you get any further episodes you must go back and see the Doc again.
I hope my advice didn't scare you too much, but there is no easy way to tell you online that something is urgent.

Well done Margaret, I would have said exactly the same if I had been online - remember my dad having something similar years ago so I have always been aware of it.

Rob, glad you have got sorted and hope the meds help... and hope apart from this you had a good weekend.

My dad too Sue...he had a gastric ulcer that played him up for years...then one day it went and he was rushed into hospital and operated on right away.

It is always wise to get a professional opinion(says she who avoids the medical profession like the plague).

Ha Margaret could be me talking...

I remember my dad's episode like it was yesterday - Sunday lunchtime - must have been getting on for fifty years ago - rushed to Accy Vic...

Seems like Rob has got away with it - let's hope so.

Re: Vomiting brown?

Been coughing a lot first thing in the mornings. Doc says that is related.

It happened about 3 in the morning. I awoke needing the toilet and whilst I was on it came on and I had to vomit into the sink. It looked like I had been making chocolate crispies with coffee.(sorry for that image) and using sink as a mixing bowl. Never seen anything like it. Still feel nauseous. And thought I was going to lose my lunch

That is so spooky.......my dad was taken ill at the weekend too, but too long ago for me to remember whether it was Saturday or Sunday.
I think it was Mr Agnew who did the surgery for my dad.......I remember thinking he looked really poorly as they loaded him( wrapped in a red blanket)into the ambulance.

Margaret Pilkington 11-09-2012 13:53

Re: Vomiting brown?

Not many images put me off Rob.
As for the cough, if it persists while you are on the Omeprazole, then it needs investigating separately.
It sounds as if your Doctor is treating you for Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disorder (GORD)...people with this condition find they get asthma type symptoms......wheezing being most common.
This is thought to be due to the acid reflux stimulating the many nerves that lie in this anatomical area.

Your doctor is right to warn you off spicy food and alcohol.....you should eat early in the evening and sleep propped up......this will help.

Did you deliberately choose a bourbon for the purpose of this post?

Nope, always bring some bourbons to work and I was eating one at the very time a read the post. Didn't put me off, though - had another one after.

No alcohol? Or spicy food? This is serious!
Good job you took Margaret's advice, hope the pills soon sort you although reading flashy and jaysays posts looks like you could be on them for a while.
But jaysay enjoys the odd drink(don't know about flashy) so there's hope yet!

Saw your pics of Winchester - brought back memories of when I lived there - 1976! Also Brighton - the pier didn't look like that in my time - circa 1970!

Margaret Pilkington 11-09-2012 21:22

David, that might because your condition is different.
I hope you enjoyed your bacon butty. I could just eat one right now!

I drink in moderation Gordon, but the difference with me is I take these tables as a preventative, because of some other tablets I'm on which DO play havoc with your stomach

Yeah its an expensive do being ill

Re: Vomiting brown?

According to the British National Formulary (BNF).....in1999(that is the latest formulary I have) it was £30.13 for the NHS to buy a pack of 28 capsules.
It might have come down in price since then, but I would think that the 28 day supply which you were prescribed, cost quite a bit more than you actually paid for them.
Yes...I have just checked and the cost now to the NHS is £18.50.

Tell me about it Restless, but I'll tell you what I would gladly pay £7 odd for a script, rather than looking at my list of medication I get on a monthly basis. I used to have a season ticket, until I became exempt from payment, but I once actually went through Mims and priced up my monthly prescription, it frightened the bejavours out of me:eek::eek:

There is one med I'm on Margaret cost £16 per day, but its kept me out of hospital for going on three years now, touch wood, says he scratching his head;)

Re: Vomiting brown?

Then it is worth it John......how much does it cost to look after a patient in an NHS hospital...definitely more than £16 per day.

Excellent description there bud ... how come there are no pics? Something like this could go viral on You Tube:D

But seriously ... glad to hear that you have a handle on it and are getting treatment.

I don't have a problem paying for my pre payment card for prescriptions - what I do have a problem with is that England is the only country in the UK that has to pay for them - likewise hospital car parking charges and exorbitant university fees - I thought we were a united kingdom and I object to subsidising the general public of Scotland and Wales (don't know the situation in Northern Ireland).

Well, if you're a student from Northern Ireland & have a place at a Scottish University, you get yourself a Republic of Ireland passport because then - as an EU student - you pay nowt. Crazy, innit?

BBC News - Rise in EU students applying to Scottish universities

In fact, if you're an English student with a bit of Mick blood & wish to study amongst the jocks then it may be worth trying to get the paddy passport. It used to be easy, but I dunno what it's like now.

Ya crazy ain't it Anne, mind you their might be changes in Scotland if Alex gets his way and they break away from the UK, might not feels so benevolent when they've to fund it themselves instead of being subsidised by English taxpayers:(
