Does anybody still use a CB radio?

I have just been into cash converters and they have an old Binatone CB radio for £59.95.

This radio is very likely to be over 20-30 years old.

yet they can still demand such a high price for it, when I asked I was told they had sold others for around £100 recently.

Who to? my recollection of CB is that it is a dead duck, no one uses it now because Facebook is can be used on their mobile phone.

Are any of you using CB radio still?

(Truckers might still.)

if cash converters are telling you the truth then they have found a few mugs .Dont be one of them and get one elsewhere like ebay as others have said

Re: Does anybody still use a CB radio?

I would not buy one, I have several packed away in the cellar.

Just curious if they are still used.

As above, I thin they found a few mugs or were telling me porkies.

It's even legal in this country as well using almost all if not all the bands it can do. They have recently allowed the use of AM and even SSB in the UK to follow EU regs

Sorry Neil, that's just gibberish to me, I've never used one before so all this AM,SSB code means nothing ;)

I hear folk have "handles" is that just a oldskool term for a username?

Still nothing as yet, I've managed to stop it hissing with the SQL button.
I also had a look on ebay and it looks like I'd be able to get my money back if I decide it's not for me.
If you do get it up and running , my "handle" is Jason :D

This reminds me of Die Hard 4, in which one of the computer geeks has a CB set-up. When all the computers are hacked and go down, CB will be a last resort.

Always a good choice ... I still have an old Cobra SSB hanging around someplace. Used it a lot when I lived in Saskatchewan (if you can pronounce that correctly, you become an honorable Stubble Jumper ... maybe even a Binder Pilot;)) They were great there ... country nice and flat, except for the Badlands. I used to go by "Wooden Nickel" The CB used to sit up on the dash of my truck, next to the Fuzz Buster.:D Of course, if you listened in on the truckers, you always knew where the Horsemen had set up their radar.

I have a ham radio transceiver which will cover the CB bands (receive only) and I have had a listen around, there seems to be a few tipper divers using CB to talk to each other about where they muck need tipping or picking up on building sites. Most of the drivers who work out of the Whinney hill quarry use them.

To be honest G, I've had enough of the ruddy thing already.
I've had it scanning all 40 channels and stuck on 19 and still not a peep except this morning when I briefly heard someone mutter about a truck.
I've not heard anything else all morning, maybe I need a roof aerial for better a signal, doubt I'll get one though :D

Neil 20-08-2014 17:56

Re: Does anybody still use a CB radio?

Hand helds are always poor because of the aerials compare to car or house installs.
Are you sure you have it set to the right setting for UK? Should say UK on display. Select 19 and just leave it and see if you hear anyone after a while. When scanning it might miss transmissions. Here is a link to the manual if you don't have it http://www.midlandeurope.com/downloa...n-42-multi.pdf

I've printed a copy of that manual Neil, cheers.
I've had enough of it, I've had it connected to that "magmount" and still sod all and I'm not buying a aerial for the roof so I might pick 1-2 folk up....

..... (like yourself) I may just put it away till we experience civil unrest,at least I know you'll be out there someplace and possibly accyman too :D

Years since I used CB, however for those of you that would like something similar on your smartphone, there's an app for all types, try this:-
Zello. Live conversations.

You can set up your own group, password protected, use it as a walkie talkie at work or just contact complete strangers in your area.

RainbowSix 01-09-2014 13:24

Re: Does anybody still use a CB radio?

You will usually find someone called Stanley (I think) on in the evenings (9:30) having a waffle with some friends, he's in accy.

Your areal needs to be outside to work best but inside on a lot of metal (the fridge) may work well too however before transmitting the aerial really needs tuning to get the SWR down otherwise using it will give you both a poor outgoing signal and may blow the output stage.

There is still a community of cb'rs albeit very small, they tend to collect the radios for old times sake etc. The prices going on ebay are ridiculous and fradios are often re listed.

When the SHTF and mobile phones won't work, hell freezes over and planning laws are opened up then Cb might come back.
Until then its only us old wannabebackinthe80's-ers that will use it.

Or the local mosques to call people to prayer although they tend to use VHF\UHF radios instead.

If you enjoyed the "wailing" Neil this might be right up your street :D
Mobile Islamic Handheld Mosque Azan Salah Namaaz Bayaan Receiver Scanner Radio | eBay

I'm thinking of buying a handheld scanner, not the above version though, apparently there's more going on on them than there is on the cb radio...

....does anyone know what sort of things you can hear on them nowadays?

You use to be able to listen to the emergency services, planes, ships etc.

Re: Does anybody still use a CB radio?

I would be surprised if that radio is legal, it transmits as well and I suspect you can't on those frequencies

Not sure what you can get now. I know my wife used to listen to the Police pulling me over when I used to drive home from her house at silly o'clock before we were married so about 20 years ago :D
