Smilies

I`m a bit new to smilies and can`t find one in the selection available for "tongue-in-cheek", is there one that`s generally accepted to mark a tongue-in-cheek comment, maybe big grin or wink, after a quick google, all I can find is this :-J which is a bit naff.

I'd use one of the aboves.
I'm glad I replied to this as I had a look through the emoticons list and now have a new favourite! eat_arrow

The list is as is, until it gets updated, which could make it a never ending task if everyones favourite was to be added.
Searching and adding your own is a great deal of enjoyment anyway.
If you notice the one I put on my post wasn't placed as a picture and there are lots of bright ideas out there.

I can understand that, could very quickly become a full time job for someone, but if you don`t ask...
please enlighten the rest of us how to put your own smilies on a post without attaching it as a pic.

It seem to remember there is a 'how to' I did, somewhere on site, try to search for that, if you can't find it, google how to plenty of hints and tips out there and finding them yourself it is the best way to learn.

Then if you still can't do it, come back on here, will see what can be done.

You can't just find a smilie and decide to add it to your own forum without checking on its copyright first, as you say it could end up a big job and we would have a mass of smilies in the list

Maybe the forum rules need updating because linking to a smilie is still against the rules. The other problem with linking an image is that the owner of the image you linked could change it to something not suitable for this forum and then we would have unsuitable or advertising images on the site.

Image Linking

Image linking is no longer permitted, as it’s a form of theft ‘stealing other websites band width’.

I think we've been here before, Yes it is still against the rules, but back when that rule was made everyone had dial up modems and providers had small servers, they often said not to link to their sites as it restricted their band width, however most of the servers now are quite large and fast and the sites often say linking is permitted, (though it is always best to check, it will be on their site somewhere). Plus back then our own servers were small and slow and too many smileys would slow that down.

:)

Unfortunately the rules don't always fit very well. Look at this rule, how would you comply if you linked to an image on your site? :D

18: All links posted on site must have a description attached to it to explain what the link is about. or the post can/will be deleted as spam.
If your linking to your own site please remember to put a link on your site back to Accyweb (this is Internet courtesy and etiquette)
you must ask a member of staff before you link to your own site first

A lot of them do get deleted when we spot them, makes it awkward though when people have commented on the link and deleting the post will make less sense than his post did anyway ( that goes with any members post not just his )

Re: Smilies

Ok I have added a Rule to the site

18a: Linking to a site to use smiles if slightly different and will be allowed.
you can link to a site to put the odd smiley in a post

A couple of things to remember
Do not just post a smiley in a post on its own or this will be deleted, there must be text in the post too
Do not use to many smiles in your posts or they will be deleted at the discretion of the mods
DO NOT use a site called "smiley central"

we have had a lot of trouble with using this site when you link to a smiley unknown to you as you cant see it but other members can it also puts a big advertising banner on site each time you post a smiley
you can try this site which has some good ones
http://www.tiptopglobe.com

Just while we are on the subject of site rules here is a link to the rest of the site rules

Searching for the smilie that suits exactly, what you intend to post can be fun and the choices out there mean AccyWebs small list of examples can be ignored, by those that make the effort and the results can be most effective, so the solution is in your own hands, you don't need to worry about penguins and bananas.
Though as a couple of Roy's catch phrases include the terms Penguins & Bananas perhaps he can be allowed a little self indulgence?

Sugarmouse, instead of attaching image, you need the url.
Go to smiley site - Free Smileys, Free Emoticons, Free Smiley Emoticons, Page 1
Pick your smiley, the url is next to it, highlight the url, right click and copy.
When replying, click the insert image button, paste the url into the box and it`s done.

then and this where it gets clever :)
Therefore two monkeys would reduce the time taken or the chance of writing the complete works of the Bard by half.

What's half of infinity?

That'll get the Morecambe scientist's marbles rolling. She's agreed with me twice this week I'm not letting it happen 3 times. :)

And anyway where would you get a typewriter from these days ;)

Well I've still got a typewriter - a present for passing my eleven plus.

As for monkeys, I always thought it was infinite monkeys and infinite typewriters. Once you bring infinity into an equation you can wave goodbye to normal arithmetic.

This is the bit I like offa' there ;

Real monkeys
In 2003, lecturers and students from the University of Plymouth MediaLab Arts course used a £2,000 grant from the Arts Council to study the literary output of real monkeys. They left a computer keyboard in the enclosure of six Celebes Crested Macaques in Paignton Zoo in Devon n England for a month, with a radio link to broadcast the results on a website.
Not only did the monkeys produce nothing but five pages consisting largely of the letter S the lead male began by bashing the keyboard with a stone, and the monkeys continued by urinating and defecating on it. Phillips said that the artist-funded project was primarily performance art, and they had learned "an awful lot" from it. He concluded that monkeys "are not random generators. They're more complex than that. ... They were quite interested in the screen, and they saw that when they typed a letter, something happened. There was a level of intention there."

Less the AccyWeb may qualify for a study grant??? ;)
