A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
At the right hand side end of Lower Barnes St there is a new housing development which covers the area down to the river.
I am contemplating moving there. What is your opinion of the area eg. crime and asbo type info would help me decide. Thanks |

Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
Cant remember the full details , the waste company is based right down the bottom near the river i think by turning left just before the Hyndburn Bridge pub on Whalley rd , the single lane track goes right to the bottom of lower Barnes Street

Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
Thanks - I think I have found them
Skip Hire UK, Nationwide Skip Hire, Mini Skips, Midi Skips, Builders Skips, Roll on roll off, Grab loaders and Asbestos removal from Skiphire UK A potential problem that I am grateful to learn of. |
Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
I thought the price seemed to good to be true without some hitch or other :(
Protest against asbestos plans for Clayton-le-Moors site (From Lancashire Telegraph) Skip hire firm investigation following Hyndburn bonfire (From Lancashire Telegraph) Green belt homes plan gets refusal (From Lancashire Telegraph) Hyndburn planners receive one complaint a day (From Lancashire Telegraph) Action is threatened against skip firm - Accrington Observer I will be viewing it anyway and specifically ask about whether the firm is now 'behaving' |
Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
just to put this in perspective the skip company access their site via Whalley Road and don't travel down lower Barnes street. The road between Lower Barnes Street and the Hyndburn pub is blocked off a few hundred yards in from Lower Barnes Street.
Lower Barnes Street is not the place that has been represented here. |

Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
My family have lived on Lower Barnes Street, on the little block next to Forts Arms, for around 50 years - in fact I was born in that house - & have always been happy there. I know this is a little higher up the street than you are looking at Margaret but on the whole I wouldn't have anything negative to say about that area, apart from maybe that the buses are a little infrequent these days especially at the weekends
|
Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
Am I right in thinking the area you are talking about used to be refered to as the Hounds, my grandad used to say Im goowin fer a walk round thounds.

Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
My mother in law moved down to Lower Barnes Street from the top end of Clayton......she lived there until she died and she was very happy in her sheltered accommodation flat......she had a second floor flat and could see out over Clayton...she wasn't far from the park and she could go there for a gentle stroll on sunny days.
Margaret, go for it. |

Wherever you live there will be some 'negatives' - the 'trick' is finding a place that meets most of your needs and only has 'bad points' that you know you can cope with. |
Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
I grew up in the bottom end of Clayton , my family still live there , i would move back tomorrow but the one thing that bothers me is the traffic in a morning , from sparth to hare n hounds is like a car park at times

I think you are spot on with your comments about where to live...there will always be some drawbacks, but as long as the good points out number the bad ones, then you are onto a winner. |
Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
My mother used to call it goin' round th'ounds as well. Don't know what the origin of that is.
|
Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
Wouldn't that be the Hare and Hounds pub?
|
Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
No. Miles away from there. This is the track that runs along the side of the Hyndburn from Lower Barnes Street to Whalley Road, so the very bottom end of Clayton. The Hare and Hounds pub is at the corner of Blackburn Road and Whalley Road up top end.

Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
My dad still calls the route from Clayton to Harwood via Lower Barnes Street "o'er switchback"

when i first stated work i used to pedal that way on my bike , i didn't realise you could still get through ,i thought they'd blocked it off at the Harwood end when they extended the industrial estate

Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
I viewed it today and have applied for it. I will have to wait a week to see whether I get it. There were two young couples viewing at the same time, so I do have some competition - fingers crossed.

Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
Good luck margaret hope yeh get it. surely yeh must have priority oer young uns?? or is that another thing of the past?

When I got back home I had an email alert from Rightmove that a house on the estate is on offer at £25 a month LESS - so I am hoping the competition will prefer that. |

Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
I used to walk over the fields to visit my aunt Annie in Snuffy Arod on a sunday after mass at St Mary's, I think the first building you came to on the Gr Harwood side was a big weaving mill with a bowling green on the side, must have been part of the mills social club. always loved that walk & the smell of the sunday roast when I walked into aunt Annies. Sentimental ****** are'nt I.

Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
Getting that flat is looking good - they just need to see my income verification docs (on their way to them), and it's MINE :Banane20:

Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
I like it here :D
My son and his wife are making great progress with the unpacking - I expect to be fully installed by weekend. Sitting on the balcony in the sun, having morning coffee, reminds me of holidays in Italy. Neighbours are friendly and civilised, and their children are well behaved. Once I recover from the vapours from gloss paint (landlady thought she was doing me a favour by 'refreshing' woodwork) I expect to resume my contented life style. Children play on the grass in front of these flats - I enjoy watching them and we exchange smiles and 'hellos'. I know I did the right thing in moving - just need a little recovery time - I am very exhausted. |
Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
Good on yer, seem to be settling in n enjoying life a bit more, hope it continues.;)
|
Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
So pleased Margaret, a bit of a gamble, glad it paid off. You can get on and enjoy life now. How lovely to have a balcony in this weather. Hope the sun continues so you you can make full use of it - you arrived at just the right time!

Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
One of my Home Help ladies is a born and bred 'bottom ender'.
She has told me that the site of this 6 year old housing estate was the location of Clayton Laundry which burn down when she was aged 10 - 30 years ago. I have been unable to find anything about Clayton Laundry on the web., and would like any personal anecdotes about it if you have them. When Dave recently posted pics of the river nearby, I asked him about this feature I had seen on Google Maps https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Cla...d+Kingdom&z=19 It is logical to presume that it was a waste water outlet for the laundry, would be nice to confirm or deny that. Such primitive pollution of water courses was tolerated 30 years ago. |
Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
My mum worked in the office at Clayton laundry for a time, it was owned & run by the Joinson family - I remember the night it burnt down, we lived on Lower Barnes Street & it seemed the whole of Clayton was there watching, a horrible night

The name Joinson rings a bell. A girl I 'palled with' in the 50s (in Ossy) had a boyfriend named Joinson who lived in a house overlooking Mercer Park - likely to be the same family. |
Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
I remember a reporter in the Observer named Joinson, in the 60s. I think they might have had something to do with the building trade as well, in Clayton.
|
Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
That was Rowland Joynson. He spelt his surname with a y rather than an i although I think they may have been the same family. I think he published some books on the local area as well.

The grocer in Accy where Mum used to get her supplies on the 60s was also called Joinson, Herbert I think. May have lived in Clayton. He had an old fashioned shop on Whalley Road, I think in the same block as the Crown and Anchor. Chairs for customers at the counter, butter and sugar etc weighed, things stacked on shelves behind the counter. Mum used to write her order in a notebook, and then drop it at the shop. The groceries were delivered next day. |

rileys chemicals were down there .they sold the works and land for building.some dodgy stuff made there during ww2.most folks in clayton either had a family member or knew someone who worked there, always had vacancies due to nasty type of work.

I don't have a garden to grow veg so I don't forsee chemicals in the land would be a problem for me - however, if anyone here can supply more info about precise location of that factory and the type of chemicals produced, I would appreciate it. |
Re: A question for Clayton 'bottom enders'
I have now found this -
http://www3.lancashire.gov.uk/counci...=A&FILEID=3763 which indicates that the chemical works was where the skip hire place is now - no problem :D |
