Um - wasn't it already infected? Warts are benign growths caused by a virus.

I was talking about a bacterial infection, sepsis of the site...and yes I do know that warts are caused by the HPV virus......but this isn't really considered an infection as such.

Don`t remember any infections afterwards, just lots of blood. The roots were quite long, i`d guess about 5mm which would have gone a fair way into my finger, but I think if you just cut the top off, they will re-grow. No home remedies like wartner then, you had to go the docs to have them removed.

Long roots:rolleyes: - you aint seen nothin' until you have a carbuncle.

I once had one on my buttock. Kaolin poultices and Lion ointment cured it.
As it burst I observed it in a full length mirror and the stringy roots reach several feet downwards.

Now I always liked dealing with stuff like that...it was very satisfying(well, for me, that is...not sure about the patient:))
I used to like dealing with belly button 'stones' too....though they could be smelly when you got right down to the bottom.

We used to use sliver nitrate pencils to deal with warts......I don't really recall them having 'roots' though.....maybe my memory is getting a bit foggy.

Perhaps root isn`t the right word for it, the bit that went deep into my finger.
Dave pulls his wart out. - YouTube

Not usually squeamish about things, but hate belly buttons, can`t even bare to touch my own, makes me cringe just thinking about it.

There isn't much that puts me off my tea...well, that is, unless it is tripe or kippers on the plate.

I suppose that comes with the job, you grow accustomed to things like that.

Never had Tripe, but I do like a kipper butty.

Oh dear,

it brings back memories.

I was 15 had just joined the Navy, within days, had a couple of warts growing no doubt infection because I was mixing with different folk, (the first few weeks seemed to have everyone catch something).

Anyhow one of my warts was on the knuckle of my index finger left hand.

Had been getting treatment and it was slowly showing signs of dying.

Was in the gymnasium, the guy in charge had us stood in a row 'at ease', I felt a slight itch that needed scratching on my knuckle and was shocked to find the wart had come out and blood was flowing everywhere behind my back from the gaping hole that remained.

The Gym Instructor noticed me squirming but thought I was hiding something behind my back and called me forward.

Show me what you're messing about with, boy.

I was reluctant.

He jumped forward grabbed me by the scruff of the neck and demanded I gave him whatever it was that had caused the upset to his discipline.

His hand was held out, I had no choice, I had to place the wart on it and yes there was one heck of a root attached to it.

The sod tried to get me on Commanding Officers orders for punishment routine!

It was hard work for the rest of the lads to keep their faces straight, or they'd have been in trouble too.

I knew warts were the HPV virus (funny how I saw a car number plate with those letters today !) But yes I took what you said to mean an infection caused in the surrounding skin when you faff about with them. I have never had a wart, but I have caused myself infections from fiddling about with scabs/other blemishes-It's a bad habit!

I didn't realise warts had 'roots'! So warts are literally rooted into your skin, a fair way down?Until your body combats the virus ?(If it ever does I suppose)!

I don't think I want to know what a belly button stone is. Unless you mean a jewel in a piercing...No, I definitely don't!

Belly button stones are definitely not jewels!

I had a small wart on the palm of my hand when I was a kid and if I remember correctly my mother rubbed the head of a matchstick (wet with saliva) on and around it over a period of time and it disappeared?! I can still see where it was... Has anyone else heard of this??
: )

Yes, it was a common practice when I was growing up in the early fifities.

Your mother didn't appear in the star role of the Alien films by any chance?

Acid will remove warts.
