Bus Fares?
I'm interested to know bus fare prices these days just in case I visit Accrington sometime soon and just out of interest to see how expensive it's probably become these days. I can't remember how much it was back in the day but wasn't that much.
What's it cost these days for: Accy to Blackburn Accy to Whalley Accy to Burnley Down in London it's £1:50 for bus ride no matter how long if it's on the same bus that is. If you get off and get another bus within one hour the 2nd bus journey is free. Buses no longer take cash and every one has to have what's called a Oyster Card - you top up in news agent's, stations and using credit cards and scan it when you get on the bus. Is there anything like this in the Hynburn area these days? Do they still take cash? Thanks... |
Re: Bus Fares?
Can't tell you the cost of the journeys you mention.
No Oyster cards to my knowledge...but more people seem to be using smartphones with their ticket on it. I think the flat rate fare is a good idea...they do that in some cities in Australia. The tickets are Zoned so if you go more than a certain level of zones you have to pay the extra. We used the trains a lot to get into Melbourne and had been paying tram fares in the city....not knowing that our train ticket gave us free access to trams and buses within the city.(and back then it also allowed cheaper fares on the ferries to Williamstown too - if my memory serves me right) We did a lot of travelling on the buses and on the trains, the services were prompt, clean and good value for money. Trains in Sydney were double decker. Although we were not residents we qualified for cheaper tickets on the buses after a certain time...a bit like here. The buses here take cash. |
Re: Bus Fares?
Sorry I cannot help you KestrelX as I have a bus pass....well at least until the forthcoming election.

Re: Bus Fares?
On the Transdev buses Kestrel you can get an adult day rover ticket for £4.40, pretty much does what it says on the tin & cheaper than buying individual tickets for each journey & yes, they definitely do still take cash :)

Re: Bus Fares?
I live in Hythe Kent.
Bus from Hythe Kent to Dymchurch Kent = 5 Miles. Bus Leaves at 08.26 and arrives at 08.38. Cost £4.00. Single OR From my house to the next bus stop = .90 pence. From my house to the second bus stop =.90 pence then its add another 45 pence to every bus stop en route to Dymchurch. I have a bus pass. But if you want to go via The Hythe to Dymchurch light railway its £10.00 return. |

I find it much easier and safer using my phone to pay for a pint of milk and loaf of bread in Tesco Express than messing about with money. |

Neil, not everyone has smartphones(in some cases of those who do, the phone is smarter than the person carrying it).
I prefer to pay with money. I distrust your method of payment....and yes I know there is counterfeit money out there. |
Re: Bus Fares?
I use 'real' money too Margaret. Ar least when I do a weekly shop I know exactly what I can spend and I do not have a fit at the end of the month when a statement arrives. We have never had a credit card and never will. We know exactly where we are with our finances and have never been in debt. If we need anything we save up till we can pay for it or we do without. Might be old fashioned but it works for us.

Re: Bus Fares?
Yes, I am afraid that I fall into that category too.
This way you know if your purse is empty you have spent up. I have both a credit card and a debit card. The credit card is used very rarely and the balance paid off at the end of every month(most months there is no balance to pay). The debit card was originally to guarantee cheques. I use this to pay some bills. Other than that I use money. |
Re: Bus Fares?
As for bus passes...I would be quite happy to use a bus pass that required a flat rate fare.
I often travel before the bus pass can be used so I frequently pay my fare. I do not expect to get something for nothing, but then I still pay taxes which contribute to the subsidised fare..So it is not FREE. I get no other perks for being of pensionable age. I pay dental charges. I take no prescribed meds...yes I can have a free eye test each year, but it is four years since my last one. So the government do not give me very much |
Re: Bus Fares?
I always pay cash wherever i can, i detest using a card, but have got to in some instances.
|
Re: Bus Fares?
I think it must be generational Cashy.
We are not the smartphone generation, even though some of our generation have smartphones, we are unlikely to use them for paying for things as we were brought up with the tangible value of cash. I had to get a credit card when I spent 6 months in Australia. Hotels will not accept bookings if you do not have a credit card. It is routine for them to swipe your card and keep a copy of the details until you check out. This is to make sure they can get any charges that have been incurred during your stay. Also booking flights in Australia would not have been possible without a credit card, but since my return I have used it very little. |

They could have a similar system in the Hynburn area like Oyster card and have a flat fee, no matter how long you travel on one bus. In London if there is one bus that goes all the way across London it's still £1:50 no matter how many zones you go through and how long it takes and if you get off and on a 2nd bus in 1 hour the 2nd ride is free. All the buses aren't run by the same company down here but are over seen by one body, Transport for London. I remember back in the day, in Accy you had to state your exact stop when you got on to pay the correct amount and if you stayed on too many stops over what your ticket said you could be in trouble if an inspector got on, I think drivers actually used to shout to people that they should get off if they passed their stop back in the good old days - that is still how it is up north but not down here, I suppose as they still take cash up there you still have to pay different amounts for where you intend to get off. |
Re: Bus Fares?
When I was little you could get one of those runaround train tickets for twenty one shillings for an adult, ten and sixpence for children...and children under five travelled free.
My Ma used to get us up early every day and for a week we would be stood on the platform waiting for a train to the seaside...Ulverston, Grange over Sands, Southport, St Anne's...we didn't go to Blackpool as there were too many things that you could pester your Ma for. We once got on the wrong train coming home and a very kind Guard put us on a milk train home...needless to say we needed no rocking to get us to sleep and it was well after midnight when we got home. They were very happy days. Picnic, meat paste butties, Kia ora to drink and a banana if we were lucky. |
Re: Bus Fares?
What lovely memories Margaret. Pity most of todays children will not have those because they are just stuck in on their ipads.
|
Re: Bus Fares?
Yes, I feel like I had the richest childhood, even though we were poor.
It was poor in financial terms, but rich in experiences...and you cannot put a price on experience. |

As to meat paste butties, they figure quite often for me baggin on work days still. |
Re: Bus Fares?
It was either Shippams beef paste or sardine and tomato(yeeuk).
We rarely had bought food...although at some seaside resorts we used to,get a jug of tea which was half a crown, but you got two bob back when you took the jug back. If we were very flush( meaning that the gas meter had been emptied and a good rebate obtained) we could be seen sharing a bag of chips |

There was program on the news few days ago about buses being cut in rural areas because councils can't afford to subsidize them! |
Re: Bus Fares?
I can tell you its £2.60 from Accrington center(castle I get on) to hare and hounds in clayton-le-moors. not been to blackburn/burnley on bus for a while tho

Re: Bus Fares?
It was £1.70 from Knuzden to Oswaldtwistle Civic which isn't very far. I was on one of the new Pennine Reach busses about 9.30am. I was the only passenger and that bus runs 4 times an hour. Two got on in Oswaldtwistle both using free passes. Makes you think that bus should run less often and go to some of the places subsides have been cut to instead.

Re: Bus Fares?

Re: Bus Fares?
He is almost a communist isn't he so we will all be equal and get free bus passes, we'll be able to park where want, oh want a minute, people park where they want in Accrington already

You'd be alright going to Accrington(well unless you lived down the bottom end)...coming back would be a lot harder...uphill and open to the wind and the weather.

I hope Corbyn gets in and brings in Nationalised buses. It certainly would make sense to have an over all bus company in the Hynburn/Lancashire area with one pricing system and smart cards. |
Re: Bus Fares?
Yes, but they are something in the region of £1000 new(I haven't seen any second hand ones).....and I wouldn't like to trust myself on one of them...the bus drivers don't give you room to fall off.
As for Corbyn getting in and Nationalising the buses(and lots of other things)...it STILL has to be paid for some way or another...and he would borrow money to do it...or raise money from taxes. Kestrelx I wouldn't hold your breath for that one. Lots of people seem to have their tickets on their smart phones these days....I suppose that is like having a smart card. |
Re: Bus Fares?

If you pay £2:60 from Accy to Clayton - then if you have to catch another bus to get to your destination - that's £5:20 if you are going to work, say in Blackburn - then you have to come back which is £10:40 per day - 5 days a week - that's very expensive, that's over £50! In London that would be £3 a day. Corbyn might get in with this new Tory Policy to take money off property owners, your property is worth more than £100,000 they take the rest off you if you have to go in a home. That will hit the middle class. |
Re: Bus Fares?
Corbyn has no chance whatsoever of getting in imho Labour have sunk too low sadly. and the stupid Lib Dems never even floated.

Labour has lost a lot of support. The electorate does not trust them with the economy(I wonder why that is?). They are not trusted over immigration...and though it is anybody's guess if the Tories can bring immigration figures down to acceptable levels, Jeremy Corbyn would not control immigration in any way...in fact he would welcome immigrants. He would also accept any deal that the EU offers rather than walk away. This plays right into the hands of those cheats and charlatans over the channel who would do anything to humiliate the UK. I would rather eat my own eyeballs with a pickle fork than vote Labour as things stand at the moment. When recently asked how I would vote...I said 'it boils down to ABC - anyone but Corbyn' I am pretty sure I am not on my own. |
