Do Mince Pies contain mincemeat?
I don't think I've had one with mincemeat in it but I've got a box of co-op pies in front of me that say they contain mincemeat. Is the mince pie mixture called mincemeat or what? If it is, then why?
It also says on the box that it is suitable for vegetarians. So someone somewhere is lieing to me! :) |
Re: Do Mince Pies contain mincemeat?
If you look at original mince pie recipes they did in actual fact contain meat as well as the currants raisins etc. Nowadays we just have the sweet stuff but it goes by the name of mincemeat.

Re: Do Mince Pies contain mincemeat?
Ah, originally they contained minced beef with the sweet fruit combination. I did read somewhere why the meat was taken out but if you do a google you will find it.

Re: Do Mince Pies contain mincemeat?
Comercially prepared mincemeat for use in sweet pastries also contains suet, that is what the little white bits are.

Re: Do Mince Pies contain mincemeat?
Willow, I have in front if me a packet of Atora Light. Vegetable Suet. With a vegetarian society sign on it. Ingredients are Hydrogenated Veg Oil, wheat flour, sunflower oil, stabiliser, pectin and sugar.

Re: Do Mince Pies contain mincemeat?
That must be the one they use in the vegetarian mince pies then. Traditional suet comes from cows.
