Re: accrington High School 1960-1966

I got in touch a couple of months ago with a guy I really fancied at school. Silly thing told me he always really liked me too, but was shy. He lives in London. Strange thing was, I had booked my hen party to London shortly before I got in touch with him. I told him and he offered to FINALLY take me out (before I was wed). So I had Friday and Satruday nights out with the girls and then Sunday he took me for a curry before I flew back on Monday. Cool eh? I finally got a date with him 15 years too late, but at least while I was still single!
NOTHING HAPPENED OF COURSE, but it as a very nice evening!

Regarding Accrington high School:

Former Headmistress of the school (1952 - 1969) Mabel Horne has died recently at the age of 93, in Australia.

Re: accrington High School 1960-1966

I went to the High School, but it was before your time. I left in 1956! But I too remember Miss Horne and was very interested to hear news of her.

My main memory of her are that she always wore tweed, the fabric AND the perfume!!

It seemed to me that she tried very hard to be intimidating - and succeeded most of the time. She and I nearly had a stand-up/knock-down fight about my future studies. But I won out in the end, and am I glad I did. I just did not fancy life in a laboratory...

But I do remember she was very dedicated to the school. Possibly more so than to the individuals in it. Anyway, I hope she had a happy retirement. If she was in Australia, she probably did.

Anybody out there that was at school in my day?

Re: accrington High School 1960-1966

I left in 1969. She terrified me too most of the time but I do recall one classic "incident" when I painted an easel pink and was sent to "see Miss Horne" which meant standing outside her door, having knocked, waiting for the light signal to change.

Standing there wondering what she might do was far worse than actually facing her. When I explained to her that Miss Hindle had sent me to see her because I painted my easel pink her response would have fitted well in "The Importance of Being Ernest" - "an easel?" as if painting anything else pink wouldn't have been anywhere near half as serious! She didn't do any more than give me a very fixed stare which would have defeated Paddington Bear. I think she was probably bewildered.

The easel painting was a moment of total madness on my part. I had been working on a painting of a pink box, some of my paint (as was normal) went over the edge of the paper onto the board, but I'd had a lot on the brush and some splashed onto the actual easel. Miss Hindle, in an uncharacteristically sarcastic moment saw the mess and said "Why don't you paint the whole easel pink?" - so I did. Well, at least I started to.........

Another memory of Miss Horne was being summoned to assist her one day "sign" letters to parents. This involved rubber stamping them all with a stamp which said "Mabel B Horne" in the form of her signature. I can still visualise the flow of it to this day.

Do you remember how she seemed top float down the corridors wearing her gown which fluttered out behind her and her "sensible" shoes clattering?

accrington High School and Mabel's "Commendations"

Grief! Remember when you had done three good pieces of work i.e. 3 A's on a trot, or similar, and you were sent down to Mabel's office. You had to knock on the door and await her "come in" - I nearly wet myself on more than one occasion waiting to hear that voice boom through the door! You then went in, she studied your work, and then slapped the words "commendation" in big red lettering (with a rubber stamp) on your work! Wow! The thrill! The delight of getting one of those in your book! (sad, innit :) really)

WillowTheWhisp 21-09-2004 13:16

Re: accrington High School 1960-1966

Oh yes the thrill of Mabel's little stamp! I can't see that impressing anybody these days.:D

Funny how everyone called her Mabel behind her back but wouldn't have dared admit it to her face.

Are you sure it was "come in" and not "enter"? I remember even if the light was on you still weren't supposed to enter until commanded to do so.

Do you remember her opinion of a Lancashire accent? It was all very well to have one just so long as one never used it.

Re: accrington High School 1960-1966

I also left in 1959, but that was after spending an additional year in the sixth form before going on to Uni. I wanted to take German and needed the extra time to bring it up to scratch. I do remember Miss Mottershead - a real eccentric, but a good teacher - I am very grateful to her. The dreaded Mabel is another story. I actually had to have a fight with her before she would let me take the courses I wanted. She was a bully - but I don't give in to bullies!

Can't say it was my favourite time of my life, but on the other hand I have a lot to thank the school for. I wouldn't be where I am now without the education I got there. I am just sorry that I have lost touch with all the people I knew at school, even those who were at the time my "best friends".

I've lived "down South" for most of my adult life now, but I still think of Accy as my "home town".

Anyone remember me?

Re: accrington High School 1960-1966

I was there from 1961 to 1966. I remember the joy of getting a 'Commendation' and the fear woe betide you got a 'Disorder Mark'. Mademoiselle Croix taught me French for most of my time there, Mr Mortimer (Science) had us (3T) as his first class as form master, poor chap, how we made him blush:o. There was Mr Reeves (latin) Mr Anderton (maths) and Mr Bloom (science) Mrs Fox (history) Miss Scotson (history) Mrs Taylor and Miss Tomlinson (P.E.) Miss Brown (Deputy Head) Miss Redmayne (R.E.) I'll have to have a think re the rest of them! There was a lovely red headed lady that taught Art and a tiny woman that was the music teacher.Other names I remember are Miss Melody, Mrs Riley. And of course there was the School Hymn.. 'Let us now praise famous men'.. I can still remember the words and tune (?? or lack of), how we could only wear gymslips and thick black stockings til the 3rd year , at which time we could wear flesh coloured stockings too (aka american tan ! ), we had winter and summer uniforms and at the Christmas party we could dress up in 'normal ' clothes. We were told off for wearing nail polish and back combing our hair was frowned on too. We could buy biscuits in the corridor at break time, eat pretty decent school dinners, and we raised money to train a Guide Dog for the Blind which we named 'Penny'. ..... what a trip down memory lane !!!

WillowTheWhisp 03-09-2007 16:57

Re: accrington High School 1960-1966

I had Miss Melody for geography and Mrs Riley for maths and Physics. She hated geometry! :D So I always used to pick geometry questions when we had a choice. At one stage we had Miss Melody for music because we were short of a music teacher.

Aaaw poor old Mr. Mortimer. I remember him going bright red right round to the back of his neck at times.

Miss Kay, who taught music at AHS, was my piano teacher when I was 7 to 10 years old. She lived in West End, not far from me, and she was still unmarried when I got married in 1962.

Re: accrington High School 1960-1966

Mabel seemed truly scary back then and she bullied Muriel something rotten. Mrs. Kennedy was just plain awful "Are you giving me sidelong glances?" used to leave the whole class in a state of panic. Miss Redmayne and Miss Hindle were my favourites. I saw miss Redmayne and Miss Bullough in Durham Cathedral about 10 years after I left and wished ever since I'd spoken to them. Mrs Emerson was sweet and it's thanks to her I scraped a grade 6 maths.

I'm on the Accrington High School Facebook page and have recently posted that it will be the 75th anniversary of the opening of the school on 8th September 2014. I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in a "whole school" reunion such as the 50-year one held in 1989? Please let me know if you would be interested - Accrington High School only, not Moorhead High School - as long as you started when it was still AHS.

I'm a bit lost here Judith - if the 50th anniversary was in 1989 did that mean the school opened in 1939? I thought it was mid-30s. Also, my sister who was born in 1950, cut the cake along with the head girl for the 25th anniversary as she was the youngest girl in the school, would probably have been ten years old, in Sept 1960.

I was there 1957-1964, no bad memories, all good.

Whilst I am not suggesting that I get invited to the reuniion, I would like someone to post on the AHS Facebook page that I am mem sec of the AGSOld Boys ( some of whom were girls and also attended AHSD after '39) and am wanting to make contact with any OBs - some may be known to the OGs who might help me find them...... The girls who started in 1953 are due their 5-yearly reunion this year. I know 3 of them.

Ah I get it now - my little grey cells have taken a wander...

Must have been the 21st anniversary when my sis cut the cake - suppose it was the first big one they could celebrate. You started that year - do you remember the cake cutting? Jen was so small she had to stand on a chair to be the same height as the head girl and Miss Horne so they could all hold the knife for the photo.

Judith Addison 20-02-2013 00:34

Re: accrington High School 1960-1966

I remember the cake cutting very well! Yes, it was the 21st anniversary. Jennifer was one of the girls who started at 10 years old. Miss Horne came round the 1st year class rooms measuring to find the smallest girl. In 1H it was between me and Marie Chadwick - Marie was slightly smaller. Jennifer was in 1T. I have had three reunions for our year. Jennifer has been to one or two. The first time she came she brought the newspaper cuttings of her cutting the cake. She had also photocopied the long scroll photograph of the whole school from 1965. She pinned it up on the wall in the "Oaklea" function room. Jennifer and Mrs. Riley added most of the names.
