Met someone online from Accrington....

I have met someone online who says he lives in Accrington. I have asked him to verify his identity but he says I should trust him. I don't think it is an unreasonable request on my part. I am in the US. I do have photo's but I don't want to post them on here. How do I verify his identity? Any suggestions? Thanks.

lettie 17-07-2006 07:34

Re: Met someone online from Accrington....

Hmmm, this is a difficult one as it is hard to trust someone that you have never met. Has he verified your identitiy? If he has, how did he do it?

If he is an Accrington resident he may be on the electoral roll, which I think you can check online. Posting photos may not be helpful as none of us may recognise him and many of our members live abroad or in other areas of the country. Accrington is a large town so it is not possible to know everybody. Good luck with your verification but I wouldn't trust him. If he was a genuine friend/suitor, he would be happy for you to verify his identity. If he is not happy for you to do this then I would drop him like a hot brick..:D

Re: Met someone online from Accrington....

You could always ask him for his address and send him a letter/ postcard and ask him to send you a letter back to the address that you put in your letter. You’ll soon know if it’s a fake address or not.

Just a thought but don't trust.

KIPAX 17-07-2006 08:57

Re: Met someone online from Accrington....

Lens last point is all that counts.... Dont trust.. Harsh but 100% best advice. Don't trut photographs or any information.. always verify. The internet is a breeding ground for con artists..

It's also possible to meet genuine people ... But the con artists far outnumber the genuine so you have to be wary...

Madhatter 17-07-2006 10:35

Re: Met someone online from Accrington....

No it's not unreasonable. From my experience of online friendships and a relationship with someone I met online I can say that the above is true. while you need to trust to make whatever you want this to be work, you should always be very cautious as the majority aren't genuine. I'm not sure what they get out it but thats how it is. Even the above doesn't prove he's where he is, which is why you have to trust to a certain extent. I checked the ex on the electoral roll because she said her 'ex' no longer lived there, turned out he was on the ellectoral roll at her address. she came up with a plausable but unlikely excuse, but there was dozens and dozens of plausable but unlikely excuses. Reasons for not ringing, reasons I couldn't see her when I was up accrington, Reasons I couldn't go upstairs. hmmmm anyway
You should as len says and ask his address, then verify it by sending a letter, a land line number to. I'm not sure if you can check electoral records on line but if you can you have to pay.
if you asked on here maybe someone could check at the library for you.

Thanks everybody. I am being really cautious with this. Thank you.

Re: Met someone online from Accrington....

Anyway, you dont need to go far as there are some very nice people on here and you can trust, in a fasion that is.

Is it true that the UK does not have picture ID's? In the US we have to show one all the time.

Len 17-07-2006 10:49

Re: Met someone online from Accrington....

At the moment we only have driving licences with a photo id.

Re: Met someone online from Accrington....

Ok, Thanks LEN. I appreciate all your advise. I had a feeling that this would not go anywhere. Just thought I'd play it out until he says or does something. I will ask for his address though and see where that leads me. Thanks again.

KIPAX 17-07-2006 10:59

Re: Met someone online from Accrington....

Not everyone has a driving licence or even a picture one for those that have.. The goverment keep saying they will introduce pic ID but it gets voted against..

Slightly different but still on subject......
IDs arn't all there cracked up to be.. If someone from the gas board or police or anywhere else came to your home and showed you ID (complete with picture etc).. how would you know it was real and not made on his computer? Telling people to check for some sort of ID is no longer a good detterent to con men in this day and age..

Cynical I know.... but.. :)

Listen Silver honey, quite simple, tell him to prove who he is and where he lives or else no more chatty, chatty. Not that difficult.

Once he has ... we will give him the run-down for you ..:D

Len 17-07-2006 11:07

Re: Met someone online from Accrington....

Keep us informed on how you get on with this. We’re a little nosy and it would be interesting to see what happens. It could prove useful to others that maybe in the same predicament.

Re: Met someone online from Accrington....

well there's me but I'm not from accy lol
it may be cynical but it's true.
You can get paranoid though, and you'd never trust anyone online enough to be friends with them, I can be like that sometimes, depends where you meet them online I think.

Re: Met someone online from Accrington....

silver hear all see all say f*** all is what i live by, its more than dodgy trusting anyone online who will not come upfront, what lettie, kipax etc say is good sound advice, also agree with katex, drop him like a sack of king edwards. apart from all that hiya.:)

Madhatter 17-07-2006 15:16

Re: Met someone online from Accrington....

you could just stay friends online.
I personally tend to do as cashman says now, I'd never trust anyone that seems to have a possible but unlikely excuse now.
He may be cautious of you too though remember.
I don't want us to put you off, if this could turn out to be something really worthwhile though. Thats why I say you have to trust so much.

Hi everybody,
Seems I might have stirred the pot on this one. Well, just for an update. I have found out for sure he has been lieing to me, so I did as advised and told him where he can go. So for those of you who knows of someone that says he works in public relations for Save the Children Foundation and he wants you to make a donation by Western Union Money Transfer, it is a scam. I emailed someone at Save the Children. I also forwarded the response I received from them to the man himself. I don't think I'll be hearing from him again. I want to thak everyone for your great advise.

Len 17-07-2006 22:31

Re: Met someone online from Accrington....

Thanks for that and sorry it hadn't worked out but theres plenty of time yet.
Good luck.

Well, I was wrong. He did IM me. I was told I was falsely accusing him of being a con-man. Of course, he turned it around so that I was apoligizing to him. I'm such a dork. So the saga continues......

Western Union is enough to set off every alarm in the world. I know it does have a valid use for soem but it must be the most abused system in the world.

PS, I actually nearly wet myself a few months ago when watching teh African cup of nations football. One of the major sponsors of Nigeria was Western union! :D(For those who aren't fully net savvy, there is a scam called the 419 Nigerian that was the first major scam to use WU.)

Glad there`s a lot of decent folk around here.
But it`s like it`s been said, there`s so many conmen around the net, hiding behind their keyboard they can be anything and say anything. Don`t let him make you feel guilty. If he was genuine, he would be apologising to you and be totally understanding of your concerns, instead of trying to hide his guilt by making you feel guilty.
You had gut instincts about this guy, gut instincts are usually a good start.

But don`t let people like him destroy your hope, for every con artist there is a wonderful person as well somewhere waiting to be discovered :) Just be careful until you are sure though :)

ooh wow a topic close to home......ive met a few people off the net...one of whome im good friends with, the only way and i mean ONLY way to do the whole meeting people off the net is to make sure that somebody knows everything you know....tell someone close to you who your talking to, name, age, address everything. and if you do eventually meet, it has to be a very public place, hey why not even take a friend? be safe....stay cautious!
gem x

Re: Met someone online from Accrington....

I have actually been invited to girls houses on the first meet, and they've had kids upstairs.
the one from up there got straight in the car, never even looked at me.

One I met from brum was more cautious, she got a lift, and I had clear instructions to wait by the car not in it, so that they could see what I looked like. then we went to a pub not her place.
I prefer it to be public, stops me getting accused of doing anything I haven't.

Re: Met someone online from Accrington....

Got to agree with the majority of posters, even you Mr K. (see karma Comment). The best thing is give nothing away, use official web meets to meet people and even then tell someone where you’re going and what time to expect you home. Always let someone know if you intend to change your plans, always keep your mobile to hand and primed to an emergency number, even mum or dad. Never meet anyone you don’t know in advance of the meeting, keep your own council and stick to your plans.

If someone you never met rang you on the phone at home and said they would like to see you, you would hang up, so why put yourself at risk on the web, if you’re interested in someone fine, meet them at an official function. By the way age makes no difference, if your 14 or 74 don’t do it unless you know what your doing.

One last thing to follow on from comments made by Len and Mez, as well as others. The official web meets are safe and there are those that will look out for the younger or more vulnerable people who attend. Use them if you want to meet people posting on this site. Always use personal judgement and never take face value.
