As can be seen above, it worked! Thanks for the instructions Shaz!
The photo of the class from ca. 1952. I'm on the back row second from the right.
The late Les Gibson is also on the back row second from the left.
Sat down at the front left is Gordon Wittacker.
Sorry but all the other names elude me!

Late of Belfield Rd.

P.S. Why make it so difficult to add just a photo?

Those children are of my era, but I can't say I remember any of them.
I went to Woodnook infants...a stride or two further up the hill.

Hi there Margaret,
I never did find out why some of us went to Woodnook St Marys and others went to Woodnook Infant School!
It seems that at one point all of us came together at St Marys, at least I’m thinking so because some of the people on the photo went with me at St Marys!
I got this photo by e-mail from Allan Handley a couple of years ago, and the same discussion cropped up, however not to despair, the photo shows some people that I do remember:
Back row: Second from the left Malcolm Waddington. Second from the left the late Gerald Scott.
Middle row: First from the right Allan Handley.
Front row: Second from the left Bert Binns. Second from the right Raymond Woodcock.
Sitting down at the front: David Astin.

All the others elude me.

Cheers

Re: Woodnook St Mary's

Thank you for the picture Philip.......None of those faces are familiar either.
I do not remember very much about infant school...my only memory is getting to school a few minutes late and finding the door locked......and standing in the playground crying.
One of the secondary school girls found me and took me into school......the only other memories are of being made to have a lie down in the afternoons, playing with cowrie shells and having a coloured umbrella on my coat peg......names of other children elude me.

Philip Kenyon mentions Malcolm Waddington. I have been out of touch with Malcolm for some years, but his daughter lives near me. Malcolm's wife, Ann Harwood came from Accrington. She died some years ago. He re-married and lives in Shropshire (?). A talented guitarist ,Malcolm has an aunt in Acc or Church.

Hi Bob,
Should you be in touch with Malcolm again, please give him my regards. It might help if you tell him a couple of things in case he can't remember me:
- Lived at no. 5 Belfield Rd
- Was in Christ Church Scouts up until being approx. 17
- After woodnook St Marys went to Woodnook Secondry Modern.

Cheers

Re: Woodnook St Mary's

Hi There,
I mentioned one person (Bert Binna) on the above photo. A funny thing occurred some years back.
I was in my local restaurant in Stein am Rhein Switzerland, when some English guys came into the pub taking a table at the back, and starting to discuss a certain matter. They then called over the owner who couldn’t speak any English whatsoever. She then brought one of the guys over to my table, who asked the following:
“Which is the fastest way home by plane, from where we were at that moment” This he asked me in a broad Lancashire accent. I asked if he was from anywhere near Blackburn and he replied Oswaldtwistle! At that moment I looked at one of the guys around the table that they were occupying, and asked if that was Bert Binns, he replied yes, that is Herbert Binns, whom he called over. I then told Bert who I was and that we went to school together. This didn’t register with him at this moment. I then carried on and told where he lived in Accrington, and what his sister was called etc. He then slowly looked at me like I was a ghost!
It was a shame that they had to leave in order to catch a train, but we did have a bit of a conversation, realizing that we hadn’t seen one another for over thirty years or so.
It would seem they were working on a contract job just over the border in Germany, and one of the team’s wife was very ill back in the UK, hence the question of the fastest flying way home, whether from Stuttgart or Zurich.

All in all a very small world!

Cheers

Philip Kenyon

Hi There Irene,
Yes I attended both Woodnook St Marys and Woodnook Secondary school.

St Marys from 1951 until 1955
Woodnook Secondary from 1955 until 1959

I must admit that the name Iren Davies rings a bell but can’t put a picture with it, sorry.

Hi Irene,

Sorry but the years do go by. As mentioned previously the name Irene Davies does ring a bell, but cannot put a face to it, the same applies to Irene Howard.
Can you give me some sort of clue i.e.
- Where did you live?
- Where did you go dancing?
- Did you favour one particular pub?
- Any more names of friends that you had might also help.

Cheers

Philip

Re: Woodnook St Mary's

HI, I know it's been a while since anyone posted anything about Woodnook St Marys but I've only just joined. I was a pupil there from about 1968 - 1972 The Headmaster was Mr Barton, his wife was a chiropodist who had a shop on King Street, my favourite teacher was Mr Whalley, I remember being terrified of Mrs Aspden who used to throw chalk and board dusters. My name was Christine Mckie, I don't remember many people, but here are some, Derek Edge who lived across the street and had a brother Philip I think. Lorraine Taylor who lived up Belfield Rd and passed her eleven plus and went to the girls High School, Christine Marsden who worked in Accrington last time I saw her. There were two other brothers always in trouble haha they went to Hollins High with me. I have really fond memories of my time there but I have no photos at all. If anyone has any I would be very grateful if they could post them. I remember seeing the old photographs of classes from years gone by but don't remember ever having one done of our class. Does anyone know if Mr Whalley is still with us, he was always lovely to me.

Samantha1984 10-11-2015 18:26

Re: Woodnook St Mary's

Wow yes, I remember all those names now, along with Derek and Philip Edge, Lorraine Taylor, Christine Marsden. I was Christine Mckie. I remember a very sad thing, a little girl with long hair who was about 8 when I was 10 who died of Lukeamia. I couldn't read music but I played the recorder ( a plastic one, mum couldn't afford a wooden one) and they used to put sheets up with drawings on off all the covered up notes then I could play. I also remember Mr Bartons dad and granddad I thinks pictures up as they were past Headteachers.

Just found this old photo from 1950.
The only people that I can recognise are the following:
Back row, second from the left the late Les Gibson.
Back row, second from the right myself (Philip Kenyon)
Middle row, third from the right Elsie Sutton
Sat down on the left Gordon Whittaker

Maybe someone out there can recognise some more of the then school friends?

Cheers

Re: Woodnook St Mary's

Came across this when browsing, I was a pupil of Christ Church late 70's early 80's. I have many fond memories of going to that school. Reading the older posts I remember Mrs Duxbury very fondly, she was the caretaker at the time I was and I always felt she was like another mother. One memory I had was going to school in the summer without a coat, come home time it was raining, so she made up some waterproofs with some bin bags. I remember Mr Whalley but the image in my head doesn't match the picture I've seen. I can't remember the name of the first teacher when I started but I rememebr Mrs Mayers (I think that was her name) when I went up a year. The class was in the new bit when you walked pass the canteen and up the stairs. I remember the strange banked slope we always slide down and the dividing wall between the 2 main play areas. Had lots of fun climbing along and laying in the gaps between. When you came in through the main gates I remember the stairs in front going down to the boiler, I always thought there was a dragon down there!! Later I was there when we moved up to Hudson Street, the old Hollins school. In my last year at Woodnook, I went to Hollins proper as a taster and was that an eye opener!, there were 3 fights in that one day, but I went to a secondary school in Blackburn instead. I was always surprised how small the Woodnook site is compared to the new Hollins and how everyone fit. Maybe it merged but I have no idea. I also remember how well polished the floor was in the main hall at Christ Church was, I used to run and slide on the floor, but was told off incase of splinters. I remember the walk to school from Richmond Hill Street. We walked past the corner shop which was run by a lady called Joyce I think. Sometimes when she had new stock we would help her take stuff into teh shop from her car and she would give us sweets as a reward. I was there when Mrs Neild left and Mr Bibby took over as head. Doing a search I found Mrs Neild passed away in 2009 RIP. Anyway I moved away from Accrington a long time ago but my childhood growing up there was a very special and fun time. I went back around 1992, so many things were famialr yet so different.

Re: Woodnook St Mary's

Chifuwan….Mrs Duxbury was my mum.
She was caretaker of the school until December 1991 when she retired.
She received the British Empire Medal for her work in education.
Alas, she died in 2018 at the age of 91.
Her body was donated to Liverpool Medical school for research.
I know I might be a bit biased, but she was one amazing lady.
