Re: Woodnook St Mary's
Yes I went to Woodnook... it would have been in 1971 through to 1974 ish.. then I went to Christ Church
The head Mistress was Mrs Wood who lived on Queens Road West, Her Husband Mr Wood was the blind vicar at St James Church IN accrington |
Re: Woodnook St Mary's
I think Mrs Duxberry rings a bell, but wasnt she the caretaker if I remember, the dinner lady was a giant... she once cut her hand banging on the door of boys toilets telling us to be quiet as she got us organised before allowing us to come in for Lunch...
I went to Christ Church after wood nook and was in Mrs Aspens Class and had a year with Mr Barton, I remember his retirement, I remember Mr Whalleys old class, use to have partitions that opened up for Assembley. I remember the songs, being sung at is retirement day ...we wont go to heaven in a biscuit tin, because a biscuit tin as biscuits in... I dont agree my lord, I dont agree... and the other song was Kingston Town, ( and when I reach Jamaica I made a stop) the song by Harry belafonte.. Mrs Apen left the same year, she was a tiger... you will then remember, Mrs Hilda Neild took over and I was then in Mr Whalleys class... my class mates where Russel Walsh, Vincent GOlding and Darren Booth. the gang of four... where are they now? Mr Whalley was amazing.... he use to get angry from time to time, go red in the face and stick his tongue out... He took me under his wing and took a few of us in his beetle to go to war museums... we loved history, the planets, modern history.... It all changed in 1975 when Mrs Neild, started to teach us about the cultures of Pakistan and India as if nothing else mattered. I just wanted to learn English and maths and complained to my dad... who complained to the authorities and Mrs Nield got very upset with me.... the point was, our education suffered as time was taken to homogenise the class's together... even back then, even at that age, we noticed things were not right. |

Re: Woodnook St Mary's
My two lads went to Christ Church School when Hilda Neild was head teacher . Yes I kn ow Doroth Duxbury as well. Didn't she work at Highams in the sewing room with my wife Christine Griggs
|
Re: Woodnook St Mary's
Ma did work at Highams but in the weaving shed.......opposite shift to my dad.
I don't recall her working in the sewing room....in fact I am pretty sure she didn't......Ma is to sewing, what Bernard Manning is to opera singing....she was comlpete bobbins at it...any sewing needed to be done Dad did it :D |
Re: Woodnook St Mary's
Ma disliked Mrs Nield intensely....she knew that she was not honest.......and hated her dishonesty...that and the fact that she favoured the interests of the asian children above any others. It wasn't a racist thing. It was just about fairness...she could see all the non asian children getting a raw deal...but no-one in the Education office at the time, was interested.

Re: Woodnook St Mary's
I was getting angry at the way Hilda Neild wanted my children to learn all about asian coultures etc , when the school was supposed to be a christian school
