Anyone remember Chans Chippy in Clayton?
Hi all,
I'm just wondering if anyone remembers Mr Chans Chippy in Clayton? I lived next door before he moved to the other side of the lights. I grew up with Wa Chan from being 2 years of age and wondered if anyone knew his whereabouts now. Last I heard he was back in Hong Kong but it would be really nice to get in touch with him again or hear some news. He had two sisters Fong and Lee and a baby brother called Ling. Thanks Sue |
Re: Anyone remember Chans Chippy in Clayton?
One of the first if not the first chinese chippys around
always called in on my way home from the Starlight club in the sixties nice people, nice food |
Re: Anyone remember Chans Chippy in Clayton?
Me too, It was good befor, when it was Doras, but when Chan took it over everybody went there, Curry & Chips with two fried eggs on top, right off the last bus from Accy , with a gut full of beer, and a good nights sleep. No wonder Ive got type 2 diabetes. The past always catches up eh.

Re: Anyone remember Chans Chippy in Clayton?
Used to call into Chans on the way home from Martholme, Thursday Friday and Saturday nights, we'd ring up with our order and he keep open for use to call in about 1-30am. The first Chinky was actually in Ossy, ca't remember what it was call, but I was only about 8 or 9 at the time, the building isn't there now, but it was on he main road where St. Pauls Court is now. They only did ordinary chippy fare, with a bit of curry sause, but curry and chip in the 50s wa unheard of.

Re: Anyone remember Chans Chippy in Clayton?
I remember Chan's with great affection. I can just see the little guy now behind the counter. My favourite was beef curry with rice and mushy peas. Sounds strange now but what a wonderful treat to take home. I wasn't too familiar with Chinese cuisine at the time, not like now, but I would perhaps have an adventurous chow mein - with fried egg on top (!) I seem to remember. Last time up in Accy had a meal at the Chinese on the corner across the road. Good quality, not too dear, but a strange place for it I thought.

Re: Anyone remember Chans Chippy in Clayton?
Bloody hell - I'd completely forgotten I'd already sent my contribution to this on Chan's. This nostalgia business clearly does your head in and warps the old grey cells.

Re: Anyone remember Chans Chippy in Clayton?
I think I must have been a 'founder member' customer of Chan's chippy -
you all remember his place was right across the road from 'The Load Of Mischief' (I used to catch the B3 there to get to Blackburn and St Peters where I schooled) There must have been a few envious chip shop owners around at the time especially when he bought his first Jaguar which he always had parked outside the front door -- but what the hell - all the English chippies closed at 10pm or thereabouts and Chan kept serving until the early hours - I'm testimony to that as I used to call in there (at the tender age of 17) on my way back from the TOASTRACK college in Manchester, on the last bus, about 1am!! - for me it was chips, steak pud, mushrooms cooked in his 'special sauce', with a dollop of curry sauce- then;- supplied with wooden fork, scoff and make my way on foot to the bottom end of Clayton where I lived at 28 Warwick Ave - (I can taste it now) |

Was a regular at the chinese chippy at Oaklea myself during the 70's/80's - never any problems there...There was a good chippy near to the Greyhound traffic lights too - next to the club with the bust outside -can't remember if it was a Con or Liberal club...

Re: Anyone remember Chans Chippy in Clayton?
It was a working mens club, always known as the top club (can't remember its real name). My uncle was a member there.

Re: Anyone remember Chans Chippy in Clayton?
When I was first married, I lived at the bottom of Henry St. We had a communal yard and Chans little boy used to come in our kitchen and ask for cornflakes...he loved them and would eat them like crisps.
I do not remember him being called Stephen.....I think he had a sister too.....I remember them both as smiley faced toddlers. |
