You were too young to go in Joe Morts - had to smuggle you in.
There was the ginnel down the side of the bridge, the Pub - Crown(?), steps going up to Joe Morts and then a large shop I think prams etc. Joe Mort's was above that and had previously been the Alexandria Billiard Hall

Twas the "Crown" Big Crown everyone called it, guy called "Bernard" had it early 60s, used to have Groups on.:)

Hiya Cooinda, I was born in Crawshaw Street at number 8 in 1942, but lived most of my time in the street at 33. My name is Peter Davison and I remember all the people that you mention, in fact, Derek Gardner is my cousin and I see him quite often. I have a picture of the street looking from just above the Horse Shoe, down towards Broughtons. As soon as I sus out how to post pictures on here I will post it. Did you have a brother called Vincent? I went to Hyndburn Park with a lad called Vincent who lived next door to the 'shoe. Hope this is of some interest.:)

Your correct Kieth. I worked at Gilbraiths with Roy Hudson. I still bump into him down Acc now and then.

I remember Jimmy Smith, I worked with him at Bowkers when they were at Blackburn. He lived up Springhill then, and I used to pick him up on Monday morning and give him a lift to work. David Gudgeon was one of a large family of children. Last time I saw him he was driving a bus round town. He drove for Accy Corperation, but after they went belly up, he moved somewhere else.

I am a good mate of the Atkiman above and am glad I found this forum for us.
I came over to Accrington from Yorkshire in about 1966/7 and started to frequent the Horseshoe pub when I started work for Gilbraith Tankers and knew a few other drivers who used it.
Stan Hindle lived next door to the pub and he was a driver and a mate of mine, Phillomina lived next down and played the piano there ( she was never sober) Next down was came another drinking partner of mine and a driver called Ted Sharples, his son also came in.. Tommy Greenwood was another tankerman now deceased who drank there..Jack Leach, Big Fry and his dad John Seary thelist goes on but not my memory. I was in most nights when I was not away from home with the tanker and weekends most of the day, that's when I saw the blacksmith clogging the horses.

I used the 'shoe till it closed and then started to use the Royal on Meadow street or new Brewery tother end of Hood street where I lived.

I have a copy of the photo which Atkiman posted and was amazed when he gave it to me a while ago. It brought back somne happy memories, I met my present wife there over 40 years ago.

Wow talk about the old days, this threads just jogged my memory...Saturday mornin', all meet up and down to toffee works just off oxford st to blag some bits n' bobs then along hyndburn road and up tenement to abbertoirs to see a few pigs get slit n' boiled and sheep stunned and punce some cow bellies about then up to blacksmiths to see "a big man wi some hammers n' stuff" ... then off to piccies...Odeon.."we come along ..on saturday morning"..etc...(saw Roy Rogers there really)... watch little rascals and stuff then home.... oh was that joiners accross from smithy called..... F H Brown?.....them were the days
