Eliza Hindle
 

I think I may have found a clue to my great, great grandmother - Eliza Hindle. In my BMD searh, I have come across an Eliza Hindle death - December 1890 in Haslingden district at age 49. Record is 8e 111. Does anyone have any insight? I do know she was still alive in the 1881 census, but not for the 1891 census. Is this needle in a haystack worth sending to the GRO for a certificate?

Like horse racing, you are either having a wild flutter, or perhaps you have increased your chance of winning in some way. Is it worth sending to GRO for a certificate is a bit like asking 'Are you prepared to spend £7 on a certificate, with the risk it may be the wrong one ?' I guess only you know the answer to that.

You have done all the right things though, to increase your chances of winning. Assuming her husband is marked as Widower on 1891 Census, and she was alive on 1881 Census, then you have made an important step to narrow the search down to a 10 year period.

Errors are always present for the unwary, hopefully in rare cases. Perhaps the entry 'Widower' is actually in error in some way. It does happen.

Other ways to increase your chances of winning before applying for the certificate are to check obituaries in the local paper(s) around September-December 1890, or see if she left a Will or Letters of Administration etc. The Will abstract can yield family names and addresses that tie in without the need to purchase the Will etc.

Also check the number of Eliza's, or even Elizabeth's, who died between 1881 and 1891 whose age at death ties into the birth date shown on the Census. This gives you an idea of how likely you are to lose.

I sincerely hope that helps. But if all else fails then you have to cross your fingers and go for the certificate.

How old did it say she was in 1881? Does it correspond to the age at date of death in 1890? If so then it's a very good chance it is her. If it's slightly out then it could still be her. If it's WAY out then it becomes less likely.
