I was there when Miss Gardiner left and Mr Holden took over, about one maybe two years before the school moved to Hartley Ave, prob around 1965. Miss Birch was my first teacher, she was a proper horror. I met her again a few years ago, she was a friend of an Aunt of mine, she hadn't changed much, she still disliked children!! I remember Fra Houlihan very well, he used to play footy with the local lads on Lower Antley St at the back of the church. Fra (later Dean) Stack was, IMHO not really priest material. If a girl went to mass without a hat and took communion, she got a knuckle knock on the head!! He was very much from the fire and brimstone school of priests. He and Miss Birch could have been an ideal couple in another life.LOL

Hi John,
Strangely, a day or two ago I was trying to remember all my classmates at St Oswalds.

The ones I remember are..... Dave Parr, Dave Kay, Chris Egan, Ricky Ormerod, Patrick Harkin, Michael Walsh, Phillip Salisbury, Paul Foot, James Varley, Tony Webber, Robert Dillon, Ian Rawcliffe, Jan Olstowski, Roman Syngyz, David Boothman, Colin ?, Paula Rae, Janice Garratty, Carole Rishton, Helen Towler, Anne Marie Differ, Patricia Mitton, Theresa Killian, Ann Gallagher, Susan Baker, Elizabeth Dillon. There are a few missing, I must be getting old!!!
I still see a few of them around, I was told that James Varley committed suicide when he was about 20, and Tony Webber died about 6/7 years ago.
I think you were a couple of years above me. Do you have a brother called Chris? If so, I know him through work.

johnenglish 10-01-2010 15:07

Hi John, You must be younger than I am. I was at St. Oswalds's before you, but my sisters went to Holy Family. You may have know them- Joanie Cooney, Alicia Cooney, my brothers, Dennis Cooney and Stephen Cooney. Steve used to deliver papers round Fern Gore. I never see any familiar names when I look on the page. Do you know anyone by the name of Patricia Hinksman. She was Caveney before her marriage and has a sister called Maureen. Pat's ex was called Jimmy and came from Whalley, I think.

Stephanie, I think I was in the same class at Holy Family with one of your brothers. I didn't go to St Oswald's school, went straight to the Holy Family, from St Anne's.

What was your sisters first name Bernard, was it Kathleen:confused: that seems to ring a bell, most of the people I mentioned, I think I've only seen 4 since I left school, George Holt I've seen regularly, he lives in Ossy and of course Tony Alveston, John (Louie) Toole lives in Ossy and saw Martin Molloy when I lived in Hassy

John , if you are still visiting the Accy Web , do you mean Fred Bentley? He had a twin brother , Harry. They lived on Blackburn Rd just before you reach where the old Grammar School was.
Fred taught at Holy Family - Mount Carmel. He was keen on all sports. He once took a group abroad for a skiing holiday and came back with a broken leg.
He would have been 63 now . He died last year , sadly unable to enjoy the retirement he was about to begin.

The Miss Birch , often mentioned on this thread , became Mrs Ormerod after her retirement . I think that will surprise many.

Re: St Oswald,s School Accrington 1959 to 1965

Hello - I found this thread accidentally! I was at St. Oswald's in 1954/55. Then we moved to Chester when I was 6.
I was in Miss Birch's class, then in Mrs. Eddisforth's for most of my time there. Although it's unlikely anyone would remember me, did anyone know Hilary Webster, who was my friend? She was the same age and had a brother Peter who was a couple of years older in Miss Gardner's. I've often wondered what happened to Hilary.
I've still got a school photo from my year, but can only remember some first names!
Dorothy, Deidre, Janet, Mary, Maureen (surname Asprin?), Antony, Peter, Barry, David, Dale, Jimmy?
Just thought someone might have brothers or sisters around that time and might know Hilary.
I was Kim Peddie and lived on Blackburn Rd in a little chocolate shop.

I must be the oldest contributor to Accy Web. Attended St. Oswald's and recognise the teacher's names but cannot find anyone who was there when I was. Maybe time to stop looking. 'Bye all you past pupils of St Oswald's. Even though I got caned from time to time-always late-I loved that school, some of its teachers and all my friends, who may not own computers.

I remember Paul and also his sister Margot, they lived on Brunswick Terrace in Accy. Paul was in my class at junior school. I have no photo's I'm afraid, but if you were to contact St Oswalds or Mt Carmel they may have something in their archives. ( In 2005, I got a school photo of my dad at Green Haworth school at age 5 in 1930!)
We were at the old St Oswald's at the junction of Brown St & Willows Lane.
Good Luck
