Depending on what phone you have have you tried using that as a data point? I use my Nokia N80 as a 3G data connection getting ~450Kbps on Orange. It saves carting yet more kit about.

I have a Vodaphone one(Well I do when I collect it back from Kipax :D ) that you can try with a O2 sim in it, IIRC it wasn't locked but you need to know the connection settings.

Err, just for info, have you thought of a BT openzone sub? £11.75 a month gets you 250 minutes of connection. their website gives a search facility for hotspots, http://btopenzone.hotspot-directory....hType=ADVANCED

You can also search by sms

I'll try and pick mine up on Friday

Data connections from laptops over 3G are generally Very expensive. My initial suggestion is to use your phone as a modem(most 3G phones are able to do this). it just needs setting up on your laptop. The connection can be either USB cable, Infra red or bluetooth. You do need to know what its going to cost though, its very easy to run up £100+ bills if you don't know what you are doing.

There are other options, I need a bit more info on what you are trying to achieve so I can advise you more accurately
