Am I right thinking that the content in the smoke/fumes can over time come through the brick work and show up as marks on the wallpaper or is that an old wives tale?[/quote]

Yes. Old coal fires used to create a lot of tar on the inside of the flue, and if the bricks/stone were badly cemented with cheap mortar, then it eventually bleached through and showed on the wallpaper.

Poor flues also had a lot ledges and gaps in them, soot collected there, if the chimneys weren't swept properly, then one day the build up of soot would begin to smoulder, and then you had your chimney fire.
When we had to turn out to these type of fires, it had usually been started by the use of what was called a blow tin, a sheet of tin the size of the fire opening with a handle on it, and sheet of newspaper.
