Cheap linux PC

I'm having a tidy up and, have an old Desktop PC taking up space.

Pentium 3 @ 933Mhz
30GB Hard Drive
256Mb System memory
Onboard graphics
CD writer 24x
52x CD Rom Drive
Keyboard & Mouse
17” crt monitor
Stereo powered Speakers, Harmon Kardon.

I know this pc will run Windows XP, but I don’t have a spare serial number, so I have installed Freespire a variant of linux. I chose freespire because it comes with CNR preinstalled.
CNR lets you browse and install programmes through your web browser, and there is a programme for almost anything you want.
This is a good introduction to the world of Linux all for a bargain £25.

If you really know NOTHING about Pcs then Freespire is probably not a good choice of Linux OS for you . Ubuntu would be much better. :D

As for will it plug directly into your internet connection, it depends on how you connect to teh internet. If you have a router then I would say it most probably will as long as the mother board has an on board network card. It won't be wireless although it shouldn't cost more than 15 quid to make it wireless (obviously dependant on your router being wireless)./

If you just use a USB modem then it depends on teh make and model of modem. Linux is different to Windows and some/most manufacturers don't release drivers for their modems to work under Linux. You do however have many enthusiasts who write them for you. Most are now supported but we would have to check to be sure.

I plugged a cheap as chips, well about a fiver a while back from Ebuyer, USB wifi adapter into an Ubuntu PC. It found the device, installed it and I was on the internet in about a minute.
