About to emigrate to the USA
Hi all,
After living most of my life in Accrington, I'm about to emigrate to the USA in June this year... just a little over 3 weeks away as I type this. We're obviously very limited in what we can take with us so most of our stuff needs to be sold- it's all going very cheap to clear so if anyone's interested, you can e-mail me @ [email protected] & I can send you a list... It's too big to attach to this post - but you need to be quick... :-) Oh... and you'd have to collect anything yourself 'cause we've already sold the car... & we'll have no internet after 9th June. Best wishes to you all, Roland Drinkwater |

Re: About to emigrate to the USA
I second that.
It takes guts to ditch everything you have been used to and start a new life. Hope you will be very happy. |
Re: About to emigrate to the USA
Thanks, Margaret - My wife is American... she ditched her life 8 years ago to live with me in England & now it's my turn- I did try to make a Lancashire lass out of her but it didn't work... :-)
Best wishes, Roland |
Re: About to emigrate to the USA
Well, that gives you a head start...she knows the ropes and will keep you on the straight and narrow.
Remember you can take the lad out of Accrington, but you can't take Accrington out of the lad. |

All the best in the USA

Re: About to emigrate to the USA
While I'm ready to embrace "The American Life", I've no intention of taking Accrington out of the lad... I'm proud of my Accrington/Lancashire upbringing and heritage... and funnily enough, the Americans I've met actually LIKE my accent!
Where does that happen anywhere else in England!? |

Re: About to emigrate to the USA
Just bits & bats left now... I've sold everything else & just left a minimum back in case of emergencies- I do have a stepladder that opens out & locks into a 3 mtr straight ladder, @ £15.00 & a few rotary extension leads @ £5.00 each (up to about 20 mtrs)

Re: About to emigrate to the USA
Good luck to you, we lived in Tucson, Arizona for some 4 years. Had a great time, loved the lifestyle and the weather. It is fine if there are other English expats in the area you are relocating too - help for tax returns, and general guidance.
Many, many things are different, even cuts of meat, but one can survive. You will need credit/debit cards almost immediately and if you can get a credit reference to take with you that could help. Have fun, mix in whenever you can -but remain English - that is sure to get you involved in all sorts of things. |
Re: About to emigrate to the USA
Thanks, Barrie,
My wife is American so I have a 'live-in' tutor... I expect everything will take some getting used to, nonetheless- their dates are back to front from ours, they all drive on the wrong side of the road, their larger denomination coins are smaller in size than their smaller coins- their banknotes are pretty much all the same colour AND the same size... Opening a bank account is first on my list in order to get my pension paid into it! :-) |
Re: About to emigrate to the USA
If its owt like Spain roland it will take a couple of months for yer pension to be paid oer yon, take that into account, and good luck to yeh.;)
